Well, you can class me as in the older camp. I do believe, however, that my bluntness does not stem from my Scottish heritage. I would not want to blame the Scots in me. I think you will find my early messages quite tactful, welcoming, etc. I would say that I got hardened over the years. You can be as nice as you can but if you are the one to uncover something another person does not want to hear, etc. you get grief. Over time you just tend to forget about niceties and just shoot straight and firm. However, I do hope David does not take this personally. As Ruth alluded to, I remember my early days where I was quite thrilled to see the Kincaid-McDowell lineage out there going back to Robert the Bruce. Now this bogus lineage is nothing but a pain. I wanted to respond to this post with more of a suggestion. Some of these sensitive topics come around again over a period of time. I think that it would be useful to have some of them addressed in a message send to all new subscribers (ie. a Kincaid-L FAQ). Food for thought! Please note paragraph three and please do NOT take any criticism written by list members personally. Sometimes the older researchers forget what it is like to be a new person to genealogy who gets excited and happy to find what they believe is their genealogical line. Our older researchers who have been around the block many times sometimes lack tact in their reactions and are less than gentle in their response. We welcome your input to the list and hope you will take Don's letter of encouragement to heart. Above all, please do not get discouraged. Ruth Cherecwich Welcome to the Kincaid of all spellings mail list. We have found there are countless variations of the name due to people adopting as their permanent name the phonetic or dialect spelling they were used to using/hearing - Kinkade, Kincade, Kincaide, Kingcade etc. You are encouraged to post your ancestral line as you know it to the List. We have well over 200 list members, and chances are reasonable that someone might know something about your line. Please post your ancestor's name along with the spouse, place(s) lived, and known or approximate dates which will help others on the list to identify the line. If you could, a timeline of ancestors working backwards from whatever date you feel comfortable, would work the best. List members are always eager to help with any Kincaid line, but our Scottish tendency is to sometimes be overly blunt and untactful in response to a post. Please do not take these comments personally as no offense will be meant by the person doing the posting. It's just that sometimes we react emotionally and don't proof read, or stop to think about, what we write. Occasionally, a line we believe is correct is actually one which was fabricated decades ago and has been disproved by the list members. This is due to documentation being more readily available to us via the internet and our List Members going on site specific research trips. You are also encouraged to check the List Archives for past dialogues which might have a bearing on your line. Go to http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/search?path=KINCAID . At this page you can type in whatever search item you wish. By searching in the Body of the messages, you may get your search term revealed in postings in which the poster did not have the appropriate subject heading. Be creative in your searches with full names, just the man or just the wife, husband/wife, etc. Another item to consider is that there are many on the list who have found DNA to be a valuable research tool used in conjunction with other documentation. You are encouraged to learn more about this new method of research which helps us continue to learn about our ancestral lines. Lastly, our goal in the pursuit of our ancestors is to have fun while learning. Enjoy the list, contribute to it, meet new extended family members, and make new friends. I hate to dampen your zeal, but I'd like to see anyone with Colonial American roots whose documentation can trace back to Scotland to the 1400s. Just because someone put together an undocumented line (ie. Dr. H.C. Kincaid) does not make it true. There is no record found that links Samuel of Greenbrier to a line in Scotland; for that matter none of the so called sons of Alexander. The DNA evidence suggests that Samuel's line is based on a 17th century Separate Paternal Lineage than the original Kincaid line. I hate to be blunt but the continued spreading of this made up pedigree just detracts from legitimate genealogical research. I have done a rather simple family tree with Ancestory.com and have traced back to the year 1441 with Robert De Kyncade as the final entry or starting point. I also see where Samuel Kincaid was the first to come to the United States. Samuel was born 1700 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Can you find more info on Samuel, immigration papers, landing point in the US? etc. Shows he died in 1794 in Greenbrier, West Virginia. Also any more information on Robert De Kyncade greatly appreciated. The Kincaids on my side settled in Owsley county(Lee County) Kentucky. David Kincaid, Lexington, Kentucky
>From Barbara Allen's post on the heirs of Thomas/Elizabeth Murdock Kincaid, we know that John was probably b 1799 as he is listed as Elizabeth's heir. Francis and Hannah (if this list is correct) would need to be born prior May 1798 when Thomas m Elizabeth Murdock as they are not listed among Elizabeth's heirs. Thomas's first wife was supposed to be Hannah Viney but I haven't seen proof of this. Viney first appears on the tax rolls in the Muddy Creek area of Greenbrier Co. in 1812 which would suggest a birth year of 1791. He remained in Ohio when his father moved on to Indiana. Barbara, thank you. This helps a great deal not only in the quest for Mathew's father but for others who have an Indiana family who might tie in. This lets Mathew out as a son of Thomas as he was born 1807/8 so would have been an heir to Elizabeth. Eliminating a possibility is valuable. The next step then in discovering his father would be to find out who Francis's children were which may prove more difficult. >From the "Illustrated history of Lane County, Oregon" published in 1884. This was published during the lifetime of Thomas's son Harrison Kincaid who was founder and editor of the Oregon State Journal newspaper. The level of detail indicates that someone with a great deal of family knowledge was the informant. "Thomas of Oregon b July 27, 1800.... was the second son of Francis and Nancy Kincaid, who had 7 sons and five girls...His mother's maiden name was Murdock......January 9 1831 Thomas Kincaid married Miss Nancy Chodrick...At the age of 17 years Thomas Kincaid emigrated with his parents from Greenbrier Co. VA in a canoe and flat boat down the Great Kanawha and Ohio Rivers in the year 1817 to Indiana and settled eighteen miles northeast of Indianapolis on Fall Creek just below the mouth of Lick's Creek...He continued to reside in that neighborhood near where Madison, Hamilton and Hancock counties corner...In the fall of 1844 Thomas and Nancy...left their old home in Madison Co. Ind...at St Louis (MO) they were induced by the glowing description of a relative to go to Iowa Territory...They went to Wapello Co. Iowa and remained during winter and part of the next summer about three miles north of Des Moines River near Iowaville....Not liking the cold winter they started in the summer of 1845 for Texas (after traveling through Arkansas and Kentucky they ended back in Indiana in 1846)...In 1852 Thomas and Nancy started for the Oregon Territory but stopped for one year in Benton Co. Indiana." Wapello Co. Iowa is slightly north of but between Wayne Co. and Van Buran Co. It is closer to Van Buran. Any of the counties mentioned could be where siblings may be found though as a double cousin to the children of Thomas/Elizabeth Murdock, one of them might be why he wintered in a particular place. >From "Sibley Papers: Farmer's History of Detroit and Michigan, Vol. 1, page 490 James Kincaid and John Murdock were the executors named in the will of Robert Monroe. James Kincaid and John Murdock were in the 1820 census of the District of Columbia. "Robert Monroe was in Detroit as early as 1803, when he was fined for keeping a "stove pipe" which at that time was an offence against the fire protection ordinance. He refused to pay his fine, but upon removing the "nuisance" was excused. He was agent of the public stores and attorney to settle the estate of John Francis Hamtramck. In 1805 he wrote Governor Harrison an account of the fire. He left Detroit in 1806, traveling to Washington, D. C., New York City and finally went to Kingston, Jamaica, where he visited a brother, a practicing lawyer, whom he had not seen for twelve years. He again returned to America. He died in Washington, D. C. His will was proved and allowed May 14, 1819. The executors named in the will were James Kincaid and John Murdock. Sue, I do have the estate papers for Elizabeth Murdock Kincaid, widow of Thomas Kincaid (b.abt. 1775 VA- d.abt.1844 IN). Here is the court order from Boone Co, IN May term 1854. "In the matter of the estate of Elizabeth Kincade, dec'd. Distribution to heirs. Comes now said Andrew Kincade and on proof to the court orally made, it is ordered that the money and notes found to be due is ordered to be distributed and paid to the following persons, heirs to said estate in equal proportions, viz James Kincade, Elizabeth Frazier, Thomas Kincade, John Kincade, Margaret Vangorder, Andrew Kincade, Sarah Whitecotton and William Kincade and upon calculation it is found that after paying expenses accrued since last term, there is $65.80 for distribution whiuch will pay to each of said heirs, and the clerk of this court is ordered to make distribution accordingly by Oct. 11th, 1855. Rec'd of Kise Clerk on an order from Madison G. Walker, guardian of the minor heirs of Thomas Kincade decd. $8.22 his share above my distributive share in above estate. signed James Kincaid, Wm. B. Kincaid, May 2, 1854, S.C. Doughtery, Judge." Note: The punctuation from the handwritten copy may be faulty, but I think one can get the idea of the heirs of Elizabeth Kincaid (and notice that Kincaid is not always spelled the same in this document) . The son, Thomas, died in Feb 1846 in Madison Co, IN. His sons were James and Madison. The $8.22 distribution would come out right for 8 children of Elizabeth. I have not found any Matthew Kincaid in the lineage of Thomas and Elizabeth Murcock Kincaid in Madison Co, IN or Boone Co., IN. Elizabeth's Bill of Sale for her estate lists buyers, and most of them are children and grandchildren--known names in the family, but there is no Matthew. I really don't know about the children of Francis and Nancy Murdock Kincaid. I've seen the names Rev. Nathaniel Francis Kincaid and Thomas Kincaid who died in Oregon. But there are probably others. I hope this helps in some way. Barbara, Thank you. Do you have copies of her estate papers or know who the heirs are? We do not have a listing of the children of Thomas/Elizabeth. This would help tremendously in sorting out Indiana families. In particularly I am wondering whether Mathew/Elizabeth Kincaid from the 1850-1860 Wayne Co. IA census belonged to her. There are only 2 counties between Wayne and VanBuren. Another possibility for his father is Francis/Nancy Murdock. I believe when Francis's son Thomas was wondering about he mentioned going to Iowa to see relatives.
