Whoever does the Kincaid Facebook, we would like to put in a plug for space to put in the dna numbers for participants....who knows, perhaps facial features can be helpful in determining kinship like dna has been. I had been leery of Facebook but recently had a friend start up a class group Facebook and sent me an invite to join so I went to Wikipedia and read up on what is is and isn't and now feel it can be a good thing if the administrator does not let it get out of control. In your facebook, search this group--Kincaid Ancestry Family Group. I've set the group up as a closed group, so that members will have to go through the admin to join it. I don't know if we'll want to keep the group that way, but?I thought it best to start out like that and open it up if it seems less cumbersome later. Do you want new members to give a brief synopsis of how they tie in (or think they tie in?). For me it would be Debby Potter, Virginia (Whorton) Frelander-Pendo, Helen (Kincaid) Whorton, William T. Kincaid, George F. Kincaid, Thomas Kincaid, James Kincaid, Andrew Kincaid. There are family tree applications that also might be fun to try and figure out. When you join the group, we'll have to see if it forces you to join through my personal facebook or not. If it does, I will probably just set up a whole new facebook account under my name and set up the group over again. As it is, with my HS class group, I am getting a VERY busy ! facebook already, and I don't think that I will necessarily want everyone that joins the kincaid group as my personal 'friends' (you know what I mean?). It just gets to be so many messages, I'd rather visit the group site as well and get to know people as I have them join my personal facebook. Let me know your thoughts... It is a little late for Christmas but thought some of you on Kincaid list might appreciate this one. Here's a geneaology Christmas Eve! TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS 'Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a creature was stirring, Not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts, and with letters that said, "Too bad! The data for which you wrote Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and such Were proof that my 'hobby' had become just too much. Our daughters were nestled all snug in their beds While visions of Barbie dolls danced in their heads; But I, at my table, was ready to drop From work on my album, with more photos to crop. Christmas was here, and such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot! Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills. Though others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheer, I'd spent my time researching each birthdate and year. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A clamour outside brought me a heart-stopping fright. Away to the window I flew like a flash, I tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash. And there to my unbelieving eyes did appear An overstuffed sleigh and some outsized reindeer! Up to our rooftop those eight animals flew With that sleigh full of toys and plump Santa Claus too. A short second later I started to quake 'Cause I knew what I heard was the tiles start to break. I drew in my head- ouch!-it hit hard on the sash; Then down our cold chimney fell Santa-KER-RASH! 'Dear' Santa had come from the roof like a wreck, Tracking soot on my carpet (I could just wring his neck!) Spotting my face, good old Santa could see I had NO Christmas spirit. You'd even agree! He said not a thing but went straight to his work And filled all our stockings. (I felt like a jerk- Here was Santa, bringing us gladness and joy; And I'd been too busy to buy even one toy!) THEN-he spied my research on the table all spread. "A genealogist!" he cried. (My face turned all red!) "Tonight I've met many like you." Santa grinned, As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with delight! The cover, it read: Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead. He said- as he gave me a great Santa hug, "I know what it's like for a genealogy bug. While the elves made the sleighful of toys I now carry, I did some research in the North Pole Library. This wonderful treat I'm now able to bring To genealogy folk who just can't find a thing. So, off you must go to your bed for a rest. I'll clean up for you this 'history-cal' mess." I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee And I smiled back at Santa who'd brought something-for me! As I settled in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle To those deer, who left our roof like the down of a thistle. And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family hist'ry is FUN! Merry Christmas! Good night! Christmas Day That night I slept tight in my warm little bed While ship lists and land grants danced round in my head. The morn fin'lly came and I dashed down the stair To the first floor, to stop...and then...to just stare! From the top of our tree to the toe of the mistle- My house, roof to floor, was as clean as a whistle! And sitting right there on the dining room table Were proofs for Gram's story I'd thought just a fable! And on the sideboard in a beautiful frame Was a portrait of my great-grandfather, Jacob by name! 'Side my computer, a new manual I thought I could see...? Yes! Dear Santa had brought a gen upgrade to me! On the wall above that a chart was affixed With my pedigree on it! Back to ten-sixty-six! And there, 'neath the tree, was Dear Santa's book With a gift tag that said, "Little 'Bug', take a look And see, if you may, just what you will find here: Things of all kinds from your ancestor's days! Dear 'Bug', you'll even see that I've laid in My book some of your surnames, the ones that are 'maiden'! And to show that I understand you, of course, I've included for each fact its own complete source. Last but not least," ...oh dear, the suspense is... What I read then completely shattered my senses, For Santa's last words, written in all the right tenses:) "You'll find there the entire eighteen-ninety census!" Hours later while we relaxed round the tree, I wondered, as my daughters each tried to thank me For their Barbies, their sweaters, their stockings and such, And my spouse, for the gifts that had pleased him so much- Just how could I tell them-it's really no spoof- That Santa Claus LIVES! And that is the truth! "A Genealogist's Christmas Eve" section: Author unknown -------------------------------

The 12 marker test results have been posted for 135736. They match the Group A Apparent Ancestor Values exactly. 135736 will be placed in the Group A undetermined as results from 37 markers are needed to determine set and subset. 135736 believes descent from Fayette Co. WVA Kincaids and should match either 101753 in set 1a or 49289 in set 2a. I urge 135736 to upgrade to 37 markers as nothing about close relationship to other Fayette Co. Kincaids can be determined from the 12 marker results.. Sue Liedtke
Tennesse Land Terminology These are some of the words found in old Tennessee land documents and other related records and histories. Most of the words listed below have a wider meaning than given here. It is important to remember that the meaning of some of these words have changed over the years. This work is an attempt to connect with the older meanings. --- Adverse Possession This is a legal term, not generally found in land documents. It is a method of acquisition of title to real property by possession for a statutory period under specified conditions. --- Assignee, Assee., Asnee., etc The person to whom the right or interest is transferred. Warrants and Certificates, were commonly assigned to others. Entrys and Surveys were occasionally assigned prior to the official granting of title -the land Grant. --- Bank Sloped land at the edge of a waterway. --- Barrens, Barrons, Barrans, Barrenz Grass lands with few trees. Often referred to as having “Scrubby Oaks” A major feature across parts of Middle Tennessee and into Kentucky. According to George R. Stewart, the pioneers, upon first seeing large areas without trees, mistakenly assumed that the land was poor or infertile, thereby calling the land barren. “The Barrens” of Warren and Coffee counties is actually the gentle divide between the watershed of the Cumberland and the Tennessee Rivers. An 1863 Yankee map refers to that area as “Good Grazing Country. . . Plenty of Water. --- Bearing Tree A blazed and marked tree. --- Beech Bottom Bottom land with beech trees. These bottoms of beech {and also oak}, were prized by the farmer for he could feed his wild hogs there, on the mast. --- Below Down river or down hill . --- Bend A curve in a river or stream. --- Block The word “black“ poorly written as in “40 poles to a Dogwood & a block, thence . . .” Also the other part, the tree name, like Oak, is omitted. --- Bluff High, steep bank or cliff. --- Bottom Also called bottom land. The lowest land next to a river. Very fertile but subject to floods - the “June tide”. Remember, that since the early 1800’s, the course of many rivers may have changed within a low wide bottom. Lib Chastain tells of an island mentioned in the her old original deed of the family farm. Now the island is now a peninsula connected to the river bank. --- Branch, Brance A creek or stream. --- Call or Calls A feature, landmark, or measurement called out in an entry or survey. An example of a call is: “40 poles to a Spanish Oak, thence west . . .” Occasionally, the calls in an entry will not match the actual later survey. --- {{{{ I really liked this one(smile)}}}} Chigger While not a survey term, surely the survey party was well acquainted with the chigger. If you are not familiar with this nasty little parasite and plan to explore abandoned farms and overgrown cemeteries in the South, then take Warning ! Ask your Tennessee friends on how to avoid these critters. Panty hose is said to have a deterrent effect. { Gentlemen, take heart. Even the U.S.M.C. will use them.} The chiggers bite. They will cause itching and leave you with quarter size pink polka dots on your legs. The polka dots are not permanent. Incidentally, they can transmit infectious diseases. A chigger is about the size of a pin head . Also, beware of ticks, they can carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and can be deadly. Well, Peter, you just burst my bubble. I have been secretly wishing to match back to him since David, my husband, is printer as well. Obviously not on the same scale, but a printer all the same. Deanne Shasta Lake, CA -- "Peter A. Kincaid" <7kincaid@nb.sympatico.ca> wrote: Legal records show that there were no surviving descendants of Alexander Kincaid, Provost of Edinburgh, nor of his father, Alexander Kincaid, writer in Edinburgh. This is clear because John Kincaid, tenant in Grange was the heir of the Provost's son. With regards to DNA, you are correct in that we then have to go back to John Kincaid, tenant in Grange. Now legal records also subsequently show that the line of the Provost's heir, John Kincaid, tenant in Grange, daughtered out. There remains the possibility that John Kincaid, tenant in Grange, had one or more brothers, but I have yet to identify any yet. All I can clearly say is that there will be no YDNA to be found from legitimate male descendants of Alexander Kincaid, Provost of Edinburgh, nor of his heir, John Kincaid, tenant in Grange. Peter, the way you describe the descendents of Alexander the provost, it looks like the DNA link may not have been broken by his son not having any children himself. If the heir was a grandson of his Alexander the Provost's brother, then any male descendents would share a common ancester and could be identified by DNA matching. So, the question, as always, is how many children did the heir (grandson) have and were any male with further descendents, perhaps some who came to the new world. All: My sincere apologies. I misspoke with my reference to my ancestor James Kincaid's brother Andrew in Kincaid Digest #465. I meant to reference his brother Alexander Kincaid. The family partial genealogy refers to six brothers all born in Londonderry - David, Robert, Alexander, John, Andrew, and James. However actual historical papers in my possession only mention John, Alexander, and James and their spouses and children after they immigrated to the Washington County, NY area. Regards, Ed Loomis
All: Thank you all for your interest in my Kincaid ancestors. I'll attempt to answer several questions raised in Kincaid Digest Issue 484. I am in possession of the original wills signed and wax-sealed by Andrew Kincaid and John Kincaid dating to the early 1800s leaving their Hartford, NY properties to their youngest brother James Kincaid. James Kincaid was my grandfather's great, great grandfather. I have a number of other personal papers including deeds for Hartford properties purchased by John Kincaid from Maria Clinton (wife of DeWitt Clinton, former governor of New York and presidential candidate) in the 1790s. Our Kincaid line's surname is dwindling as my grandfather had three daughters and his only brother had one son. I have my second cousin's address and will be writing him in January in hopes of stimulating some interest in the family's history and will also invite him to participate in the DNA project. I'm not holding my breath expecting euphoria on the notion as I have not seen him in over 50 years. However, there's always a glimmer of hope that interest may be sparked. My immediate next steps in order are to: 1. research 38 ancestry.com "hints" to validate some of my Kincaid tree data on the Wheeler side dating from the early 1400s back to 742; 2. add all the Kincaid sibling and spousal information extracted from my grandfather's records; 3. attempt to upload the resulting file to the Worldconnect site; and 4. contact my second cousin with an earnest attempt to stimulate interest in the Kincaid family history. Due to interest shown in the Hartford, NY Kincaid family, I will certainly pass along any good news as well as significant progress in my documentation plans. Thank you again for your interest and the encouragement it has fostered. Respectfully, Ed Loomis Baltimore, MD eloomis@cavtel.net
