    3. Peter, You mentioned that #23547 is of the Kincaid's of Gartcows. Is Gartcows a community within Falkirk? When I search Google maps for Gartcows, I get several roads in or near Falkirk but no place with that name. http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=falkirk&sll=49.891235,-97.15369&sspn=27.839907,56.601563&ie=UTF8&ll=56.012202,-3.794403&spn=0.37617,0.884399&z=10 Thanks, Don ----- Original Message ----- From: Peter A. 3. Is this the John Kincaid who came to American on the "Henry and Francis" in 1685? These paragraphs are from "The hereditary sheriffs of Galloway; their "forebears" and friends, their courts and customs of their times, with notes of the early history, ecclesiastical legends, the baronage and placenames of the province" " John Kincaid in Chalcarroch confesses that he heard Mr. Samuel Arnot and Mr. George Barclay preach in the house of Arioland and little Aries, and that he had a chyld baptized with Mr. Thomas Kennedy, minister in Ireland. Confesses he was at the communion in Penninghame about the time of the rebellion or thereby, where Mr. John Welsh preached : And being inter- rogat if he counterfeited a testimonial for one Sprot, confesses he did the same, and does not deny but he received the Cove- nant at the communion where Mr. John Welsh preached : And being interrogat if Bothwell Bridge was rebellion, was not clear to give his judgement thereanent ; and further the pass being produced judicially, he not only owned the same, but also signed it that it was the same testificat that he forged, and this he con- fesses judicially by his own declaration : And further confesses that he was at the breaking of Mr. James Couper, minister at Methven-Mochrum his house, immeadiately before the rebellion seventhie-nyne. " Committed to the irons. (Signed) JOHN KINCAID." ******************************************************************* " William Sprot in Clutach confesses judicially that he ad- vised John Kincaid to counterfeit a pass to him when he was going to Ireland ; and being solemnly sworn and interrogat if he converst with rebells, depones he converst with no rebels from the last circuit at Dumfries in anno 83 : and being interrogat 136 HEREDITARY SHERIFFS OF GALLOWAY [A.D. 1683 how old his last chyld was, and who baptized it, he depones that his last child is about 3 years old, and that Mr. Ross baptized it. Owns the king's authority, and disowns rebellious principles, and says he knows not what the test or oath of allegiance is. " Committed to prison. 1. [KINCAID] Administrative Heads Up
    2. Hi Folks, There are people out there who may have received their first genealogy program like FTM as a holiday gift. These folks are going to start surfing the internet to see what is out there, and they will eventually find us if they have an interest in the Kincaid/Kinkade/Kinkead etc. surname. These same people may come across a tree online which we through the years have learned to be not quite factual. Please folks, have patience with the newbies. Go into your gentle teaching mode instead of your "Here we go again" thought process. We don't want to scare people off. Thank you everyone. I hope you have a personally and economically Happy New Year. Ruth Cherecwich List Administrator

    3. I came across a James Kinkead in County Cavan, Ireland who was married to a Jane who previously held the surnames of Hill, Good and Nesbitt. It appears that her maiden name was Nesbitt and she was then married twice before marrying James Kinkead. This was in 1757. This is perhaps significant because of these surnames seem to tie to some Colonial Kincaids as well. I'm sure some of you American researchers could recall them quicker. Best wishes! Peter

Unfortunately Richard this is not enough detail to link him. A more specific birth date would certainly help. In Scotland people considered Patrick and Peter the same name. Thus, your ancestor could have been baptized under either name. I don't see a Patrick or Peter baptized in Edinburgh for that timeframe. There are a couple of potential candidates if one looked west of Edinburgh. However, this is all speculation given that there is just a name and circa 1744 date. I think one might have to look at possible relations in Maine. This would help give a case for a link. For example, there was a John Kincaid in Boothbay, Maine who emigrated with a John Leishman of Falkirk in 1764. This suggests that the John Kincaid of Boothbay was the John Kincaid, son of Thomas Kincaid and Margaret Leishman who was baptized in Falkirk Parish on 23 October 1737. Thus, if further information could be found in Maine, or from some descendant, it help greatly. Best wishes! Peter ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard B. Lake III, Esq.
