Surgery went fine, I did pretty good , my potassium and magnesium are very low........blood sugar went sky high , had to take meds for all.Don't feel too bad for someone who has had their throat cut(smile) But it took care of that problem, makes me wonder what will be the next one be , sure glad we will all have a new body when we get to heaven, cause mine is sure looking pretty bad at this point, the only thing is Scott 'MoM" , you have pretty skin, sure glad he thinks so. 3. The mt DNA test is for men and women but only shows you the maternal matches i.e. our mother's mother and on back. I am in the process of preparing a report on where we stand in the Kincaid Surname DNA project on mt DNA tests to date. One interesting thing on my own mt DNA results, I match almost 2,100 maternally of which one of them happened to have the surname Kinkaid so I sent an email to the person who turned out to be the wife of a Kinkaid and since her husband had taken the Y DNA test, she forwarded my email to her father-in-law who had been emailing back and forth with Peter but did not have his latest email address so he wrote me & now Peter & the Kinkaid's, who live in England are back in contact and Peter is helping them sort out their lineage. The stories we find about my ancestors are as important to me as knowing who they are however we have developed close bonds with several of our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th generation cousins which makes the long hours of research more worthwhile! Don ----- Original Message ----- From: gregndebbypotter@aol.com To: kincaid@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, January 22, 2009 11:58 AM Subject: Re: [KINCAID] Kincaid DNA Project report Thanks for the info... so doesn't it seem like a good idea (even with the Kincaid project) to do the dna on women as well? Even if our probabilities would take us back only half as far, we could still then be linked to some male descendent, who can then be linked back further. I'm not arguing for it, since I'm not sure that I would participate at this time anyway. But it does seem that it would open more doors for those interested in their Kincaid roots (at least for the 50% or whatever that descend from a female). I've had a couple more Kincaids ask to join the group, but other than you and Dick, who I have now on my personal facebook, I haven't made a lot of connections through the group. I have, however, very much enjoyed getting to know you two a little better!! :) I've thought about opening up a yahoo e-mail account and setting up a secondary 'personal facebook' account that would allow me to post comments and write on walls for other members that do the same thing. Then I would just open up another tab on my internet explorer and keep that e-mail open as well (since it's the e-mail that tells you most of the activity that goes on in your facebook). It would still be secure in that I would only post on that facebook pics and info that I don't mind sharing with a crowd. :) >From my experience with my high school class group, which is doing very well, the group site itself is rarely used (it's the connections you make through it). I think facebook has a long way to go to make their group experiences more practical. I'll keep the group available, however, and hopefully some people are using it to make more personal connections. I'm a people person, so knowing someone is a probably 5th cousin, however many times removed, is not nearly as interesting to me as knowing the person. Later! The next most popular test is the mt DNA maternal test which both guys and gals can take, however at best you only get a 50% probability of a common ancestor at 50 generations back whereas with a 37 of 37 Y dna test you can get over 90% likelihood of a common ancestor in 12 or less generations. The best way to find and understand all the various dna tests is to go to Family Tree DNA's website and read the descriptions. If you or anyone in your family decides to do a dna test, be sure to do it through a group like the Kincaid Surname DNA Project instead of an individual test because there is a large differential in pricing. I had understood from our group that only Kincaid men could participate in the dna project, so our family would have to go back to a gg grandfather in order to have participated. Kincaid timeline of Kincaid Surname DNA Project: Heard of technology from a genealogy friend named Gertrude Urquhart Sent message June 4, 2001 to Kincaid list and got great interest Set web page on June 30, 2001 outlining project and addressing main issue; privacy Had 13 people who initially agreed to participate. A while back I wrote to let you know about a reporter from the L.A. Times who wanted to d o a story on the Kincaid DNA project. The story appeared Sunday in the L.A. Times. The link is: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-dnasurprise18-2009jan18,0,5045230.story The article is pretty good over all, but as a typical reporter, Alan Zarembo took a few liberties with his story. I am quoted as saying things I did not say as he twisted some of my words. Some stories told to him by others probably should not have appeared in his article, but he included them for shock value/interest. The headlines were atrocious! On a positive note, this story will hopefully increase the interest in DNA as it applies to a surname project. One of the positive things is that Sunday afternoon a radio show producer from New Zealand called asking for me to be interviewed on New Zealand radio on Sunday night so we did and are hoping to get at least one dna participant from new Zealand. The producer did a phone search and found there were 17 Kincaid's listed in New Zealand. We have also received emails from several folks who read the story asking for further information so we gladly sent them a copy of the Kincaid DNA results chart done by Sue and gave the the link for the Kincaid DNA Project. Several genealogy websites have put the story on their websites with the first I saw being Pasco County in Florida. Today I saw that is was posted on a website for China! I also noticed it was posted on a MIT science weblog and with a comment that the headlines were bad. Thanks to those who talked to the reporter and helped do the story! We look forward to an even better 09! We welcome suggestions on ways to improve the Kincaid of all Spellings DNA Project. I will be attending the Family Tree DNA Conference in March in Houston, TX. We will also attend and display the Kincaid DNA results chart at The Gathering of the Clans in Scotland this Summer and look forward to the Kincaid Tour planned by Clan Kincaid in cooperation with Arabella Kincaid of Kincaid who will be our host and lead the 100 or so Kincaid's on th e march down the Royal Mile at the festivities. Joan Kincaid, Dick Kinkead and others will also display the results chart at Highland Games in Canada and the USA. 1. [KINCAID] Oliver Wallace, County Tyrone >York County, SC and son McCasland Wallace
    2. Barbara Van Hout
    3. Anna Gregory Kincaid, widow of RW soldier John Kincaid, b. 1749 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA used A. S. Wallace of Yorkville, York County, SC as her attorney in the 1850's to obtain her widow's pension after husband John Kincaid's death in 1836/37 in Lincoln Co, NC. She had to prove that she was his widow, and included in the RW files are two Bible pages which named their children. The second page gave dates for when John Kincaid took the sacrament of communion at the Bethel congregation in York County, SC. Also included in the files is the date of their marriage in York County---1817. Anna was born in 1793. This John Kincaid is in set 2b, DNA # 93625. Several pages of Anna Kincaid's RW papers(over 100 pages of records for John and Anna Kincaid)at footnote.com mention A. S. Wallace. He was Alexander Stewart Wallace, son of McCasland Wallace and Catherine Stewart. McCasland Wallace was living with his son Alexander S. Wallace in the 1850 York County, SC census. We know that McCasland Wallace was the son of an Oliver Wallace as this relationship is established in the RW pension files of William Wallace m. to Ruth Porter, which also prove that McCasland and William Wallace were brothers. 1.. McCasland WALLACE - b. 1773, at sea enroute from Ireland to SC; d. Mar. 30, 1862, Yorkville, York Co., SC. In an affidavit of Apr. 7, 1847, McCasland, a resident of York District, SC, is identified as a brother of William WALLACE and Janie McCULLOUGH. The following is abstracted from the Apr. 3, 1862 issue of the Yorkville Enquirer: "Departed this life on Sabbath, 30th March, in the 89th year of his age, McCaslan D. Wallacecame from Ireland to this country in the year 1773. During the voyage, Mrs. Wallace gave birth to a son, the subject of this obituary." [Mar. 30, 1862 was, indeed, a Sunday. It is believed that the given names of McCaslan D. is due to a misunderstanding of the single name McCasland or an abstracting error. A full transcription of the obituary is desired.] Married Catherine STUART, daughter of Alexander STUART of York Co., SC. Children: U. S. Rep. Alexander Stuart WALLACE married Nancy Lee RATCHFORD (two sons and four daughters); James WALLACE married Margaret Ewart BARNETT; and four daughters WALLACE (evidence for daughters not seen). A. S. Wallace represented many South Carolina RW soldiers or their families in obtaining their pensions, as his name is shown on the records at footnote.com hundreds of times. The question is whether A. S. Wallace, grandson of Oliver Wallace of County Tyrone>York County, SC was related to John Kinkead/Anna or to James Kincaid/Susannah Black. James Kincaid's RW pension application says that he was born in 1762 in County Tyrone and he came with his family to South Carolina about 1773. 3. Further to my previous comments about Peter Kincaid, son of James Kincaid and Elizabeth Crawford, I've since noted a sasine registered in 1751 which records the children of James and Elizabeth as James, John, Margaret, Elisabeth and Helen Kincaid. Their younger children: Jean, William, Janet and Peter are not mentioned. I am not sure of the date of this sasine. It may have been before the birth of the younger children. On the other hand, it also indicates that the youngest children did not survive if the sasine was circa 1751. Again I caution about jumping on Peter as being the Patrick Kincaid of Maine simply because of the name and suggested year of birth of 1743 for Patrick Kincaid of Maine. It has also been reminded since that one descendant of Patrick Kincaid of Maine has been tested for the DNA project and that person does not match Group A Kincaids which a tested descendant of the Gartcows Kincaids belongs. Another descendant of Patrick has to be found to DNA match the Gartcows results before one can feel any confidence that the 1743 Peter was to become Patrick Kincaid of Maine. The majority of the actual deeds are worded as follows: A deed of conveyance from GRANTOR(S) to GRANTEE(S) for # acres of land in Campbell County was this day presented for acknowledgment by the bargainor with whom I am personally acquainted admitted to record and certified for register this DAY of day of MONTH YEAR.
