    1. [KINCAID] First published book on Kindle through Amazon.com
    2. Norman Kincaide
    3. Dear Kincaid listers, This is a major announcement on my birthday. Today, after working for 30 years in publishing, which started, which began when I worked for Dr. Gerald R. Kleinfeld as editorial assistant on the German Studies Review at Arizona State Univeristy, I have published my first book on Kindle through Amazon.com. It previewed here on Facebook. It should appear for sale on Amazon.com within 24 hours. I have uploaded the title cover on the Kincaid Research page under Kincaid-Duncan History. It is a project that I began in 1992 when my grandmother, Ruth D. (McMickell) Duncan, gave me a stack of letters from her son, Carl M. Duncan, which he wrote from Dec. 1952-Oct. 1954 when he was in the United States Army. I put a manuscript together in 2001 which included the transcribed letters and the interviews I did with my Uncle Carl Duncan in 1992.  Of course, it was rejected. I rekeyed the manuscript earlier this year and previewed it on Facebook. Today I placed it on the market. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kincaide/Kincaid%20Research/Kincaide%20Duncan%20History/inspections,%20alerts%20and%20frauleins%20cover.jpg http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kincaide/Kincaid%20Research/Kincaide%20Duncan%20History/ Sincerely Norman Kincaide

    3. It appears to me that this vetting post is accurate. John's John D Kinkead/wife Mary Elizabeth Smith, was born in 1811, so he could not have been the executor of Joseph Kinkead's estate in 1821. John D Kinkead/Mary Elizabeth Smith, son of William Kinkead/Elizabeth Fawcett, was a first cousin of John D Kinkead, son of Joseph/Nancy Dickinson. That is how I interpret the records. WOODFORD COUNTY, KY Administrator Bonds, 1818-1828 Image 48/142 Dec. 3, 1821 John D. Kinkead, adm. & Wm H. Cosby & Jacob Darneal for Joseph Kinkead, dec., bond of $3,000 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-20792-17612-73?cc=1875188&wc=MMY3-M18:1728478771 The above Jacob Darneal may have been this person: Martha Dickinson Shrewsbury (1796 - Unknown) Martha was a sister of Joseph Kinkead's wife Nancy Dickinson. Both were daughters of Col. Adam Dickenson/Martha Usher. Born in 1796 to John Shrewsbury and Martha Usher Dickinson, Martha Dickinson Shrewsbury married Jacob Darneal and had 2 children. The will of John Shrewsbury, Sr. includes his daughter Martha Darnell. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wvkanawh/Wills/shrews2.html There are records for Jacob Darneal in Woodford County, KY. He was also on the bond with John D. Kinkead regarding Joseph Kinkead's estate. I agree that this William Kinkead was the executor of the estate of his brother John. John Francisco is associated with this family group. WOODFORD COUNTY, KY Executor Bonds, 1818-1830 > Image 43/132 > November 4, 1822 > William Kinkead and John Francisco, bond of $1500, for John Kinkead, > William Kinkead, exec. > https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-20790-16271-63?cc=1875188&wc=MMY3-M1G:869206597 > MARGARET M. KINKEAD m. Richard H. Long – 9 Jul 1828 Bondsman: Charles E. Wilkins – Consent: NANCY KINKEAD, mother of Margaret. Consent attested by: Jacob Darneal and Charles E. Wilkins 'Nancy Kinkead' may have been Ann 'Nancy' Quarles, daughter of Tunstall Quarles of Woodford County, who married Archibald Kinkead in that county. John Kinkead/Margaret were in Woodford County, KY in 1795 for their daughter Jane's marriage to Thomas Davis. Thomas Davis and son Presley Davis were named in John/Margaret's will. JANE KINCADE (KINKEAD) m. Thomas Davis – 25 Jun 1795 Bondsman: Edwin Hood – Consent: JOHN KINCAID & MARGET KINKAID, parents of Jinney. MARGARET KINKEAD m. Henry Lindsay – 9 Jun 1796 Bondsman: GUY KINKEAD – Consent: WILLIAM KINKEAD, father of Margaret. Consent attested by: Guy Kinkead and ARCH KINKEAD. The above William Kinkead was the husband of Eleanor Gay. Interesting that this record appears to show a close relationship to Archibald Kinkead, son of John/Margaret of the Calfpasture, Virginia>Woodford County, KY. Margaret Lindsey was named in William Kinkead/Eleanor's will. Will of William Kinkead Woodford Co KY. Will book F p256 (dated July 17, 1818 recorded May ct 1821) Appraisement F p309 (May 11, 1821) Sale F p423 (Dec ct 1822) In the name of God amen. I William Kinkead of the county of Woodford and state of Kentucky being of sound mind and calling to mind that is appointed unto all men to die do make this my last will and testament. First I command my body to the dust and my soul into the hands of God in hopes of a glorious resurrection to eternal life through the merits and mediation of the Lord Jesus Christ the only and all sufficient savior of Fallen men. Second as to possessions both real and personal with which I am blessed through Divine Providence in this world. I will and dispose as followeth (towit). I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Eleanor Kinkead the third part of all my estate both real and Personal which I shall be possessed of at my death and all the money I shall be possessed of at that time except such parts thereof as are hereafter particularly disposed of to her only use and benefit during her natural life and to be at her disposition at her death. I will that my daughter Nancy Black be given a suit of mourning. I will and bequeath that all the remaining part of my estate not otherwise disposed of shall be divided in the following manner are one seventh part to be given to Isabella Hamilton, one seventh part to William Kinkead, one seventh part to Margaret Lindsey, one seventh part to be divided between the legal heirs of Gerry Kinkead, one seventh part to Rebecca Owens, one seventh part to John Kinkead and one seventh part to be equally divided between the legal Heirs of Susanna Lindsey deed to them and each of them my children for their proper use and benefit forever. I will and bequeath unto my grandson Andrew Kinkead, son of Andrew Kinkead, two hundred dollars to be paid by my Executors as soon as he arrives at the age of twenty-one. I will unto my son John Kinkead my clock, wheat farm, two Hanons and one Mattock, one hog barrow and finally I do appoint my son John Kinkead and Thomas Stevenson, Executors to this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made and acknowledging and declaring this to be my last will and testament. 3. I second Peter's statement! Norman built his site from scratch using his knowledge, money and time. I know it has been very time consuming for Norman but his work will save many of us much more time than he has used building his website. If Norman decides to do another research trip we will contribute to help defray his expenses. There is not a week passes that I don't think about how great it is that the Kincaid Research List has so many good researchers who are willing to share their work. Barbara's post this morning is a good example of sharing to solve a mystery concerning a vetting post. 3. I was wondering about the point Barb made that perhaps John D. Kincaid was the son of Joseph Kincaid and Nancy Dickenson. Can this be clarified further to make sure whether his father was Joseph or William Kincaid? Perhaps Barb can further amplify this scenario. 2. Very interesting Norman.   You show, below, Lincoln County 1860David Kincade, [102911] age 53, born NC, farmer, Lincolnton, Lincoln County, NC, p. 101, image 201, family 456. 1860Winnie Kincade, age 50, born NC, Lincolnton, Lincoln County, NC. 1860David Kincade, [2563] age 89, born NC, farmer, Cottage Home, Lincoln County, NC, p. 108, image 214, family 554. 1860George W. Kincade, [2563] age 49, born NC, farmer, Cottage Home, Lincoln County, NC, p. 108, image 214, family 556.   David Kincade, family 554, was the half uncle of David, family 456.  George, family 556, was the son of David, family 554.  Court records shows that Cephas son of David, family 456, signed authority of settling is father's estate over to George due to the fact that Cephas was not living in the area.  These families all lived very near each other, if not next door, in the area where John the Patriach bought his land and eventually gave acreage to each of his sons.  David, family 554, was one of his sons with wife Nancy Nixon.   One other item:  Even though the 1870 census shows Winnie "living with her daughter", it is an error on the part of the census taker.  She is shown living with the Peter and Elizabeth Wingate family and Elizabeth was her cousin and sister of David's, family 456, first wife Bathsheba.   If you look at the census it shows Winnie's age as 60 or 64 and Elizabeth is 62.    Sharon Kisor ________________________________ From: Norman Kincaide <norman.kincaide@yahoo.com> To: "kincaid@rootsweb.com" <kincaid@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, September 3, 2012 11:48:09 AM Subject: [KINCAID] Kincaids in North Carolina 1860 and 1870 Censuses Comparison Dear Kincaid listers, I have just uploaded Kincaids in the North Carolina 1860 and 1870 Censuses, A Comparison. 3. Norman, you will find that many of the VA Kincaid families in 1850-60 were still in VA(WVA) in later 19th century censuses. Some family members did move on but many stayed near their birth county. There was very little influx from outside, especially into the VA counties which became WVA. Sue Liedtke ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norman Kincaide" <norman.kincaide@yahoo.com> To: <kincaid@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 02, 2012 7:54 AM Subject: [KINCAID] 1870 United States Federal Census Dear Kincaid listers, What I found in compiling the Kincaids in the 1850 and 1860 Census was that there are regions in which Kincaids are very homogenous in where they were born, at least as reported in the census enumerations. In North Carolina and Virginia, particularly, there appeared to be little or no migration into the Kincaid population from outside of North Carolina or Virginia. It appears that the families in these regions remained in those localities for decades without much migration into the population from other states or from immigrants abroad. If that is so, then they should be very stable populations for DNA study in the future, absent frequent non-paternity events. I did not extract the 1850 and 1860 Slave schedules, because it just lists individual slaves without names and lists the owner without a specific enough location to indicate which Kincaid clearly owned them. There are several things that will change the appearance of Kincaid distribution between 1860 and 1870. First, there was the War Between the States or more commonly called, The American Civil War which began in 1861. This would cause, not only military casualties, but dislocation within the theaters of war. Second, there was the Homestead Act of 1862. The first act, the Homestead Act of 1862, had earlier been proposed by Northern Republicans but blocked for passage in Congress by Southern Democrats who wanted western lands for slave owners. After the Southern states seceded in 1861 and most of their representatives resigned from Congress, the Republican passed the bill; it was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862. The law required three steps: file an application, improve the land, and file for deed of title. It was available to anyone who had never taken up arms against the U.S. government, including freed slaves, could file an application to claim a federal land grant. The occupant had to be 21 or older or the head of a family, live on the land for five years, and show evidence of having made improvements. From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestead_Act This promoted settlement of western lands and thus migration westward. There was also the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln as an executive order on January 1, 1863. With freedom granted the slaves many would adopt the surname of their former masters. This may also be reflected in the 1870 Census. There are very few black or mulatto Kincaids listed in the 1860 Census. So it could be assumed that most of those listed in the 1870 Census had been slaves. Third, was the completion of the transcontinental railroad which was completed in November 1869. The completion of the railroad eliminated the need for slower stage and wagon train travel and the perilous journey around Cape Horn to California. Fourth, the War Between the States not only caused casualties, 650,000 dead combined for the Union and Confederate, but the economic damage to the South was considerable, which also prompted migration out of the South. Armies also traversed the West, East, South and North exposing soldiers to regions they had never visited before. This also planted the seeds of migration. It will be interesting to see how all of these issues are reflected in the United States Federal Census of 1870. 3. Hi, Alice, Well, I have been essentially retired since June of 2008, so I have plenty of time to build something like the Kincaide Research page. I might as well put 30 years in publishing to work. Even though I'm retired, I'm still a professional. And it doesn't seem so time consuming or tedious because, it is fun. Quite a far cry from the old Kincaid Researcher though.
