My family are presently KimmAl's; however, I suspect they were originally the "EL" spelling. Tim has my gggrandfather Joseph as XB b.1808 PA. We have been unable to confirm any closer connection. My mother use to tell me that our ancestor came with his brothers to America from Germany but I don't know which one or if same brothers as Johann Michael's sons. In regard to the musical inclination of the Kimmel's, my mother played the accordian for a short time but would never give it up then gave it to my brother. She also played piano and made sure that I took lessons. My grandfather JBKimmal was a photographer and an artist. My son is artistic and draws beautiful pictures of people as well as scenes and architecture. Maybe we are cousins out there? Thanks for listening. Hi Everyone, I am from the Kimble/ Kimmels from Va. We have not yet proven our first Kimmel in America (Tim thinks that it might be a Johannes Nickolas Kimel on the ship the Brothers to Philadelphia Sept 1754 aka John Kimble). Our Kimble/Kimmels are definitely musical also. Music was and still is very important to them. When I grew up I thought that ALL families were musical and I felt it odd when I encountered a family not related that was not. There are many people who are Kimbles or descendant of Kimbles that have recorded songs in WVa and also Va. My Grandfather was a very gifted musician. He could not read music and never had a lesson yet he could play Guitar, Violin, Harmonica, Banjo, and French Harp. He only needed to listen to a song once and he could play it perfectly. He always played with his eyes closed so that he could HEAR the music. He was often asked by his sons and friends if he would teach them how to play. " Just listen to it and you will be able to play", he would say. I have many fond memories of sitting at Granddad's knees as a child while he played and sang for us. My father and his brothers as well as many cousins also play musical instruments. Our family immediate and distant are musically inclined. I find it interesting that the other Kimmels on this list are also musically inclined. It must be in the genes &/or the culture. Tim - I've heard of the John Kimmel accordian player. There are a few of his records around and I and have one of his 78s. He's the only Kimmel musician I know of out of the past. Being a musician myself, I have an interest in Kimmel musicians. I haven't found a machine to play the 78 yet, so I can't review his playing - but at the time only the few best people in any area were being recorded, so I'd expect he was quite accomplished. As for accordians....this list isn't for accordian jokes. -- Dick Kimmel PO Box 101 New Ulm MN 56073 USA e-mail kimmel@newulmtel.net phone 507-359-1163 For information on Dick Kimmel & Co http://www.newulmtel.net/~kimmel/
Dick, I think our stereo plays 78s and 33s, but you need one of those inserts to make it play 45s. But, alas, we lost the needle when we moved here, so we can't play anything.... I still think most Kimmels are musical. Perhaps when we organize the big Kimmel reunion in Somerset County (someday) we can include a down-home type jam session. Jan T

Spring 2000's issue of Berlin Historical Society's MEMOS includes some recipes taken from the Sisterhood of Mary & Martha of the Brethren Church of Berlin PA, but MEMOS could not ascertain the date. Recipes were included from ladies named Cober, Deitz, Menges, Boyer, Johnson, Hoffmaster AND MRS. JOHN J. KIMMEL, whose recipe was for Spanish String Beans: 2 medium onions 2 tbs butter 2 cupes stewed tomatoes 2 whole cloves 2 lbs. fresh cooked string beans 1 green pepper diced 1 tsp salt 2 tsp sugar "Slice the onions, add the butter, salt, tomatoes, rgeen pepper, cloves and sugar. Simmer 15 min. Remove cloves and add beans. Heat well and serve. Canned beans may be used. --Mrs. John J. Kimmel." Jan & Donna, Perhaps you can help me with a question I've been struggling with for a while. When my ggt. grandfather Charles Wesley Kimmel's wife Lydia Lenhart died, quite a few of the the children (about 10 of them) began staying with the Madison Shober family. Charles Kimmel's wife Lydia had died by the 1900 census because Charles was living in Somerset Co. then without her; and their children were split between him and the Shobers who lived nearby. Any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated. Flyers about the Kimmel reunion sponsored by descendants of David & Leah Riegel Kimmel are going in the mail today. Here's the schedule: Friday, July 7 Gordon Bower will greet early arrivals from out-of-town at the Ramada Inn in Lawrence, KS. A room will be set up to get acquainted. Dinner is "on your own." The Ramada is at the WEST exit of I-70 in Lawrence. Saturday, July 8, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. registration, mingling, displays, scrapbooks, photo albums. Introduce yourself, tell your story. In the Haskell & Oread Rooms at Ramada Inn, Lawrence. Lunch is on your own. 5:30 - 9:00 p.m. Supper, talent show, sing-a-long, raffle/auction, get acquainted. At First United Methodist Church, 10th & Vermont in downtown Lawrence. Sunday, at McLouth, KS (20 miles north from Lawrence. Take Highway 24 north to the old Midway General Store, where you'll make a left turn on to county road 1045, blacktop all the way to McLouth. An easy drive and pretty.) The Kimmels will be meeting at the RED BARN at the east city limits of McLouth on Highway 16. McLouth is a town of 700 people, half of them kin to Kimmels, so you can't get lost. Genealogy discussions ongoing. 8:00-9:00 a.m. Registration. Coffee and rolls. 10:00 a.m. Worship and memorial service. Special song by children. 11:30 a.m. Family Sunday lunch. 1:00 p.m. Meeting. Comments and plants for next reunion. 2:30 p.m. Tour of Kimmel sites, president, historical, and cemetery. 3:30 p.m. Adjourn. As you can see, all activities will not be held at the Ramada Inn in Lawrence. Logistically, we couldn't make it happen. All Kimmel displays will be exhibited at the Ramada Inn on Saturday and at McLouth on Sunday. Costs of EACH of the two meals will be somewhere in the range of $7-$10.00. Children's rates are being negotiated. Beverly Sanders Muzzy is asking for a commitment headcount by Apirl 15. Reunion committee members are Gordon and Betty Bower, Winifred Kimmel Turner, Marie Kimmel Moffet, Judy Kimmel-Miller, Lois Sanders Uihlein and Beverly Sanders Muzzy. Bev's e-mail address is rzbmuzzy@grapevine.net and her snail mail address is 21370 259th St., McLouth KS 66054. Bev is also asking for names to be included in the memorial service (Kimmels who have died since the last reunion. Usually we give a brief biography and light a candle or something similar. Jan T
