Someone told the census taker or the census taker "heard" that he was born in Maryland. It is probably true but may not be. My daughter came across an Alabama census where the census taker had enumerated himself. He said he could NOT read or write. Now that explains a lot! I wish she had kept it. I would have framed it and hung it right over my computer as a reminder.
