I thought I should tell you about scotlandspeople.org if you haven't heard of it. It is a Scottish government site where you can search census records, birth, marr. death records and wills. You purchase credits which you then use for searching. The more you know about the person the easier to narrow down the correct records. I had one credit left from my last session so thought I would see if I could find the marriage of John and Cecilia. It is there for Sept. 29, 1845 as the one post said. It then costs 5 credits to see the actual marriage entry. You can purchase 30 credits for 6 pounds....not sure what that is in Australian dollars. You then search a birth say, and if you know the date it is easier, if not you narrow down as much as possible , you do not use a credit until you choose one record or page to see - a page may have a listing of several entries which you can then choose from. If there is one you think is yours it will then cost the 5 credits to see. But for instance for John and Cecilia's marriage it would be well worth the 5 credits. If you started with their marriage you would then have the names of their parents and can work back from there. Also you would have their ages which would help to find John's birth record. If you have a printer it is a good idea to print each record out. Also all of your searches and viewed records are kept on Scotlandspeope site for you. You can go back and look at them anytime and you do not pay again. It is a great site. You see the actual records - usually hand written - copied from the Parish records. This is much cheaper than sending for each record and faster too. I have found many records there for my ancestors. It is great to see the actual entries. Generally a birth record will show date and place of birth, the parents names,(including mother's maiden name) when they were married and where, their occupations. Marraige records generally show date and place of marriage, ages of bride and groom along with their addresses and occupations, names of parents with occupations. Death - date and place of death, occupation, husband or wife's name, name of who was present at death The Scots are very thorough with their records and I found often one record would lead me to another. I promise this is the last message from me until I hear from you again :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
