I have been doing some recent regarding his wife, Mary G. Van Matre. In "The History of Delaware County" by T.B. Helm, published in 1881, and specifically a chapter entitled "Mt. Pleasant Township", the author talks about Joseph Van Matre (who entered a portion of Section 20 within the Township in 1823)...mentioning that at the time of publication only three of Joseph Van Matre's children were still alive, and stating that one of those was "his stepdaughter, Mrs. David Kilgore". This leads me to believe Joseph Van Matre had been married before and that Mary had been born to his first wife. Do you know if this is the case, and if so, the name of Joseph's first wife (specifically her madien name) so that I might follow her family history?
