Was he a brother of George Yates, Elijah Yates, SHannah Shelton, Ann Gibson, and Martha Watts, children of John and Elizabeth Yates? Tradition has it that John Yates married a Miss Kilgore and had at least three sons: William, Thomas, and James. John Yates and his three sons are said to have fought in the Revolutionary War and moved from Halifax County, Virginia to Caswell County, North Carolina soon afterwards. They remained in North Carolina only a few years then moved to Cross Plains, Robertson County, Tennessee in the KILGORE party. William Yates was born in 1744 and married Agnes Price in Virginia. Thomas Yates was born in 1752 in Dedford County, Virginia and was married in 1776 in North Carolina to Rebecca Ragsdale, the dau. of William Ragsdale. JAMES YATES MARRIED LYDIA KILGORE, said to have been the dau. of THOMAS AND PHOEBE LEE KILGORE. John Yates, son of either William or Thomas, is said to hae married a dau. of George and Mary Isabell. John and his wife were the parents of Sally (married Lewis Ragsdale), Mary, Agatha, and Nancy. (there is more on this page source, but is not about this particular line).
