Hi, I have not visited the State Archives, but have been to the Federal many times. The great disappointment for me at the Federal Archives in Laguna Niguel is the lack of books. Everything is on film, with the exception of the early census records for "look up purposes". The routine there is to sign up for a film reading machine as soon as you enter (usually they are available), then an allotment time of 2 hours is assigned. If no one is waiting, you are allowed to stay on the machine, but if it is a busy day, you are reminded that your two hours is up and then you immediately sign up for another 2 hours. The wait is not very long. I think the most I've waited was about 20 minutes. Staff is very nice and helpful. They will not do your research for you, but will give you all the help you need regarding "how to" look up and use the machines. The cost to print at all most all of these facilities is 25 cents to 50 cents a page, depending on the machine. My advice is to take plenty of quarters. They usually have some change, however, I've been there when they didn't. Have a great time. Connie Keep what is worth keeping and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away. Author Unknown
