    1. [KILGORE] Selling Genealogy Data
    2. Hi gang, We are taking control of your normally watched channels............ Usually I have to agree with the posts most of you are make here on this illustrious board. But this time I am going to play "devil's advocate" and say that the selling of genealogy data is perfectly OK with me. As long as it pertains to the list on which I let people know I have that particular line of material. In fact, I sell some of the data myself that I have generated! One good example is the Wigton-Walker book that was published in 1902. This book has become a rare book to get hold of and if you find a reproduction of this book, you will pay anywhere from about $65.00 up to $130.00 for a copy. I took about 6 months of my time and copied this book page by page and then checked for errors and spelling on my transcriptions. This book was nearly 800 pages in length. I then took and "burned" CD-roms of the transcription of this book and I HAVE sold these CD-roms for $39.95 each to anyone ..... So you see, I do have quite a bit of time invested in this endeavor and I do sell this CD-rom at a vastly reduced price, below the actual cost of a copy of that book, to anyone who wishes to purchase it from me....... Anyone can go to my website and see the names, over 5,000 of them in this book, and get the data there "Free of charge" but if they wish to read the book, then they are going to have to either pay the big guys or pay me my paltry fee. So you see, there are definitely instances where a person should be allowed to sell genealogy data... BTW, I have seen the statement made that it costs nothing to join the Rootsweb boards. That is correct that it costs nothing to join but the administrators that maintain and those that cause the creation of the boards are definitely charged a fee by the "big guys" of Rootsweb. This fee is charged each year to the administrators so in effect, even they (Rootsweb) are selling the data (or space for it thereof) that we provide to each other here on the board.. I now return you to your normally watched channel, hehehhe. Jerry in Kingsport, TN www.Penjaccphoto.com
