The Y chromosome characterics called markers or alleles are passed on from generation to generation by males only. Geneticists have accepted a group of these markers for purposes of determining ancestry. What their criteria is for their selections are unknown to me. The geneticists have settled on the number of markers to test for at 37 since that is usually representative enough for genealogical identification. Each allele is a DNA sequence that repeats itself a number of times in a DNA strand before interruption. The number of times an allele (Marker) sequence repeats itself in the strand is the identifying number for that person. Marker 437 for me is 14 because the sequence is repeated 14 times before interruption. Everyone else I have seen is 15. Therefore the geneticists say I am at a genetic distance of 1 from everyone else. These alleles do mutate and the entire group together indicates the degree or probabilit! y of a common ancestor. Some mutate fast some slow...some decades...some centuries. If there is a group of people who share the same surname or variant thereof, the probability can be greater for a gentic matchup depending upon the surname. We have a unique and very limited use surname. If the name was Black, Brown, or White, or Carpenter, Smith, or Cooper, the probabilities would likely be much more limited. The determinations made are probabilities of having a common ancestor within a certain number of generations. What I have seen shows the results of probability based upon 4 generation intervals up to 24 generations. The mathematical calculations are based upon which allele or marker is different and the genetic distance up to 4 when testing 37 markers.. If it turns out that there is a genetic distance of 5,6,7, ot 8, it would require a continued look at 67 markers to be able to make a more definitive mathematical calculation at 24 generations of less. I have heard that! even at a genetic distance of 5 there is still a 90 percent probabil ity of a common ancestor at 24 generations with the 37 marker testfor Kilgores. I thought I could try to explain it briefly but see I have not. I think I am correct and if not, someone correct me please! Roy E. I believe all Kilgore's of every spelling variant eventually connect. With few exceptions, the Y Chromosome testing results I am aware indicate about a 99 percent probability of a common ancestor within 24 generations. I agree completely with that. There could be other lines not so connected but they can probably be explained, in time, why that is the case. This is why the Y chromosome DNA testing is so valuable a tool especially among Kilgore's. We have a unique opportunity. Those interested in participation should look into it. Roy E. 2. Ron, my can I ever relate to kids growing up and moving out. My youngest one will be moving across the state where this time of year coming home might be impossible. Although my oldest is home this year there is a small chance she may be going back to Alaska sometime in the Spring. We shall wait and see. This year was a sad one. Lost a great uncle, a great aunt, a nephew and my son. With so much sadness though I still find joy in things. Later today I will be sharing this day with a friend and her daughter and we shall be going to the movies. Next year will be a year of many blessings. Love and hugs to all my Killgore family no matter how you may spell it. LOL Dd

    2. RONALD K MYATT
    3. Good morning, Merry Christmas to all of my Kilgore cousins! Dawn is slowly breaking crisp and cold over the mountains (it is 10F outside). I am starting to hear stirings from the children upstairs. This is most likely the last Christmas all of our children will be living at home. Levi just closed on a house this week and will be moving out, Kali has two classes left to graduate from the U of U and is making noise about graduate school out of state, and Seth is starting to eye young ladies with that yearning that leads to marriage. We have received many blessings this year far too many to count. One I will share, that is the contact with family, especially my Kilgore cousins. Although we are scattered across the country we share that rare bond of family. So many joys and sorrows are shared on this list that to those who listen with their heart there is love. I shall be traveling a great deal in 2010 and hope to meet with as many of you as possible so that I can put a face with the names I have come to love. Have a wonderful Christmas day, please know you who are burdened are in our prayers and have a wonderful New Year. Ron Myatt and family

But,Killgowr's regardless of spelling variant all originate in Fife, Scotland regardless of where they might have been from after the early 1600's. Kilgour is a very particular location and place and it is by no accident that our name was preserved over the centuries to become a surname in the late 1400's. Scotland is but a child compared to the age of Kilgoueri or Cillgour or Kilgore, or Killgore or Kilgaur or however you want to spell it...its all the same. Roy E.
