    1. [KILGORE] Help for New Members-Step by step archives searches
    2. Okay, gang, here's the step by steps to searching the archives. It's old news to most of you, but don't forget to type in searches for "pickle flute", "all-girl-port-a-potty-echo-and-percussion-show" and other important genealogical search data. Every so often I dust off this old memo and repost it so that newcomers to the board have the best chance to get a real look at the valuable stuff on the Kilgore list archives. Now most of you probably know how to do this, but just in case there's a new member who wants to see all the previous posts in a searchable format, here's how to do it: 1. First, go to this address: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl 2. In the blank space where it says "name of list", type Kilgore-L, then click "submit" 3. This will take you to a screen that searches the archives of the Kilgore board. There really isn't much in 1997, so just search 1998, then 1999, 2000, and 2001 in that order. Note that one search won't hit all the years. You have to go year by year. 4. In the blank space where it says "query", type in (in quotes) the phrase you want to look for. For example: "Marianne Kilgore" "Mary Ann Kilgore" etc. This will give you all the messages that contain those words in them from the board for all of 1998 or (1999) (2000) (2001). 5. I usually click on only message body so I can read the text to see if it is pertinent. If it is I go backward and click full body of message to get sender, etc. Sometimes when you go back it will give you a message that says you must repost the data, but all you need to do then is hit "refresh" or "reload" on your computer. Don't be offended please if this is oversimplified, but I would rather err on the easy side than to leave someone without access to the data on this site. You'll find early pioneers like Vickie, Billy, Jerry, Tim, Allen with lots of baseline data and info that you can take to the bank (As a matter of fact, there really is very little speculation on this board that is not identified as such, and that is always useful hunches for us to chase down). You'll also find entries from board members who've passed away, and many of us who re-visit those sites remember them with great fondness. When you read their posts, you will also. Warm regards, Randy

    3. Hi, I'm one of the very quiet members. I just read the posts and laugh at the zany humor that I find on here, pray for the sick and injured ones that turn up, and look for some information on my line. Here's my information for the roll call. James William Kilgore married to Elizabeth Jack, Cumberland County, PA ( early- dates aren't handy) Patrick Jack Kilgore was a son who moved to Westmoreland County and then in 1800 moved west to what is now Mercer County, PA. He died in 1808. Think his wife's name was Jean or Jane. (not mentioned by name in the will) John J. Kilgore married Dorcas McClelland in 1815. They were early settlers in Irwin Township, Venango County, PA. 2 other sons of Patrick, David and Jesse, moved to Belmont County, Ohio circa 1813 and then moved on to Iowa. John J. Kilgore amd Dorcas had a crew of kids ( naturally). My direct one was Samuel Kilgore( died 1909).. who married Anna Marie Riggs. Their son John Jay Kilgore ( died 1920) married Mary Ellen Smith- lived in Mercer County, PA. Had a Francis Floyd Kilgore who married a Jessis Buckley and who were one set of my grandparents. Most of the brothers and sisters in this direct line are still in western PA. The western going ones were children of Patrick and some from the next generation too) Don't know much about them That's my line. 3. I would love for Randy to show up here for dinner. I would fix him some of my old fashioned home cooking. I am sure he would enjoy the change from all that "Yankee" stuff he has been used to. Heck, I will even throw in grits, ham and home made bread with home made jelly's and jam to go with his eggs for breakfast the next day! I found this : KILGORE, RALPH State: GA Year: 1818 County: Lincoln County Record Type: Tax List Township: No Township Listed Page: 084 Database: GA 1792-1819 Tax Lists Index Does this Ralph belong to anyone? Or could it be mine ? Mine would have been about 28 and was in GA at that time, but do not know where. He then moves to S.C. between 1824 and 1825 where my James was born. He then moves the family to Walker County Al in the early 1830's. I can not find any one who will claim this Ralph. In an earlier sentence you stated that we started in 1997, that makes us going strong for 5 years now, plus minus a few months. I have got way back on my Kilgores but I am still searching for my Grandfathers elusive other descendants from previous marriages. I do say they are eluding well. I belong to both the Roberts list and the McLennan County list and have yet been able to get even a nible of this elusive Pearl Roberts who married my Gpa (hoaward Crosby Killgore aka H.C. Killgore) back in 1910 in McLennan CO. TX. Now I refuse to respond to the rest of Randy's posting because I want to see whose doorstep he lands on LOL. 1. Re: [KILGORE] An offer of help for new members...
    2. Hi Cherise, and other new members of our list. (Oldtimers to the list may skip to the final paragraph!) I don't have any specific genealogical information to offer, but it occurs to me that some new members of the board may not know how to explore the archives from our list. Ever since Jerry and a group of rogue genealogists started this group back in 1997, every email posted to the board has been stored for posterity and is searchable. While I suspect that Gail and Jerry coach you on how to get at that list, from time to time we discover newbies who can't get at the info. If any of you out there need a step by step process for digging through this gold mine of genealogical detail, please email the board and I'll post a notice I roll out from time to time. Most of us have been on here for so long that we've garnered just about everything we can from each other. So we hang about in the rafters of the Kilgore board barn hoping some new member comes along to break new ground for us. In the interim, we've formed powerful relationships we've people we've never seen, and we tend to be a bit chatty. But we're still serious about our heritage hunt. Okay, so if a tiptoe through four plus years of postings is something you'd like, let me know and I'll post the note tomorrow. To all you veterans out there, I'm going to be doing a roll-call in the coming days, and if you don't answer, I'm gonna show up at your dinner table in a hula skirt, purple boxer shorts, and tinfoil fingertips and sing a Congolese mating ditty to your pastor's wife...starting with Barbekay and Allen! Warm regards, Randy

    2. Cherise Rayle
    3. Hi my is Cherise Rayle. I have posted to the list a while back and have not been keeping up since then. I have had many changes in my life computer pitfalls, job pitfalls (displaced after 11 years). I feel like I am finally getting things together again. I wanted to ask again since I lost everything on my computer:(. Can I get any information on my family. My Grandmother was Ellen Clemetine Knolls (knoles) Hester. Her mother was Clara Lee Kilgore. Granny Ellen was from Tipton Ga. ( She passed away just a few weeks ago.) I am trying to find out more information on her mothers mother and mother. Let's she that would be 4 generations? I understand that either her grandmother or Great grandmother was a Cherokee I am trying to trace that line as well. Thanking all of you in advance and if there is anything I can help with I will try! I am currently in Evans Georgia which is just outside of Augusta. Thanks Cherisey

    2. Bob; I have answered that post and asked for information on same. Publication, Date, Price, Index etc. Since it had 2 names of my ancestry, I am giving it a try to see what answers I receive. Supposedly I am on the board and I have received posts, however they are various names and nothing connected to the Kilgores as of yet. Matter of fact I have 3 ancestries now, as I received a post with the name of Blair also. So far the names are supposed to be John Kilgore, Archibald Alexander, (both of these are in my direct lineage) Blair is indirect on the Kilgore. I will keep you posted on what I receive. Cousin; Donna

Have been working on taxes all day, so I've just had the opportunity to read all the e-mails re: this list....its helpfulness, (or some think not); its friendliness...(some prefer all straight genealogy); its character and its "characters" easily identified by new and long-time listers and I'm definitely on the here-to-stay side. I'm not as vocal as I once was on the list, but I still love reading your notes and keeping up with who found ggggrandma, etc. I have been on the list several years now, have searched several great libraries for info, but still can't get past my brick wall to the parents of Elijah Kilgore b. 1816 TN..........but that's OK, because in the process I've gathered some really neat cousins via this list who are ALSO searching for Elijah's parents and other connections. And, frankly, I like the fact that we can share in Randy's successful writing and teaching; rejoice in Jerry's comeback from multiple illnesses; and even share sorrows like the death of our friend and great contributer to this list, Jack Goins. I dare say that some of our newer list members will be really fascinated if they get into Jack's discussions of Melungeons in the archives. Enough said, I think. Thanks for the feel of family closeness, the interest that extends from one lister to another. I don't think the person who unsubscribed meant to attack or disgruntle.....he just hit a Kilgore nerve.....and that's fine, too!!! So we like to talk! Long live the purple shorts, tin foil heads and long-lost wagon train. Where is PJ? Buried in taxes, too, I'll bet. 3. Our quest: Our quest in genealogy is to break through that "wall"; just one more step on our search . Jerry says that this search is never ending- just another step up the genealogical ladder. I believe the "flying Dutchman" doomed to eternal flight was in reality a genealogist. I recently posted info on Irish Kilgores from: "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism we find the following description of the district know as the LAGGAN:" This article locates Kilgores in the 17th and 18th century and the reason most left for America.
