    1. Re: [KILGORE] Selling Genealogy Data
    2. I'm not sure very many of us object to selling material related to our research. I personally don't like to have solicitations for any type of products on my list, but I realize I am probably a minority in that. I also don't think it appropriate for someone to join the list for the sole purpose of selling. Ive seen several disputes about this on other list that ranged from, Someone expecting the author of the information to be paid a royality because someone had posted information from a book to one list, To someone who apparentlyobtained email list from the list owner somehow and began to send bulg mailings for the purpose of selling information. (after about the 3rd one in a week, that got old). So there is my few words of opinion on the matter. Love the group! Brenda (in the flatlands of Illinois

    1. Re: [KILGORE] Selling Genealogy Data
    2. Jerry, I say very little, but I do agree with you. I will definitely pay for any information that leads to me learning more about my ancestors, for I have paid plenty to go to different places to gather info. Believe me, paying somebody for a copy of a book, CD, etc., about your family, is always a fraction of what it cost to retrieve the info yourself. I welcome people sharing info about different sources which require money, if it is pertinent to the group or an individual as a member of the group. I do not know of anyone who has made a profit off family genealogies they have published. Your are certainly entitled to tell people about your CD. It is left up to them if they want to purchase the CD. If anyone ever published a CD or a book on my husband's Kilgores, I certainly want to know about it, and I will certainly buy it. By the way, I do enjoy this list. It is a good group, and it has a personal flair that other groups do not have. Davine Roberts Jacksonville, FL

    1. [KILGORE] Selling Genealogy Data
    2. Hi gang, We are taking control of your normally watched channels............ Usually I have to agree with the posts most of you are make here on this illustrious board. But this time I am going to play "devil's advocate" and say that the selling of genealogy data is perfectly OK with me. As long as it pertains to the list on which I let people know I have that particular line of material. In fact, I sell some of the data myself that I have generated! One good example is the Wigton-Walker book that was published in 1902. This book has become a rare book to get hold of and if you find a reproduction of this book, you will pay anywhere from about $65.00 up to $130.00 for a copy. I took about 6 months of my time and copied this book page by page and then checked for errors and spelling on my transcriptions. This book was nearly 800 pages in length. I then took and "burned" CD-roms of the transcription of this book and I HAVE sold these CD-roms for $39.95 each to anyone ..... So you see, I do have quite a bit of time invested in this endeavor and I do sell this CD-rom at a vastly reduced price, below the actual cost of a copy of that book, to anyone who wishes to purchase it from me....... Anyone can go to my website and see the names, over 5,000 of them in this book, and get the data there "Free of charge" but if they wish to read the book, then they are going to have to either pay the big guys or pay me my paltry fee. So you see, there are definitely instances where a person should be allowed to sell genealogy data... BTW, I have seen the statement made that it costs nothing to join the Rootsweb boards. That is correct that it costs nothing to join but the administrators that maintain and those that cause the creation of the boards are definitely charged a fee by the "big guys" of Rootsweb. This fee is charged each year to the administrators so in effect, even they (Rootsweb) are selling the data (or space for it thereof) that we provide to each other here on the board.. I now return you to your normally watched channel, hehehhe. Jerry in Kingsport, TN www.Penjaccphoto.com

    1. [KILGORE] Kilgore obit
    2. Linda Zeigler
    3. This obituary appeared last weekend (March 29, 2002) in the Teague (Texas) Chronicle. Teague is in Freestone County, on the eastern edge of central Texas, about 70 miles east of Waco. I realize this woman is a Kilgore by marriage, but perhaps this will help someone. I have not done this before, so if I am violating some rules, I am sure I will hear about it. And thus we learn. Linda Kilgore Zeigler (no relation to the deceased) in Tyler, Texas, behind the Pine Curtain LINDA KILGORE Teague - Funeral services for Mrs. Linda Allene Kilgore, 88, of Teague, will be conducted Monday afternoon (April 1, 2002) at 2 o'clock in Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverends Tom Grissom of Grace United Methodist Church and Charles Jordan of First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Dew Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Kilgore, born June 19, 1913, in Freestone County, died Thursday in East Texas Medical Center-Fairfield. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and operated Kilgore Trailer Park for many years in Teague. Known as a lady who loved to cook for her familly and entertain friends in her home, Mrs. Kilgore was a faithful member of her Sunday School class at First UMC. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aldress Kilgore. Surviving are three sons - Charles Kilgore and wife Carol of Dundas, Illlinois; Paul Kilgore of Teague and Perry Kilgore and wife Donna of Elkhart; a daughter, Louise Collins of Teague; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

It enabled us to focus on the decision rather than the individual, and Hope refined that for us. We're Kilgores, so having opinions is like breathing air. I thank you for offering yours. 3. And, I might add, he may not share his dates with me, but then he hasn't emailed me back, but in return he told me that he is a teacher and school gets out on June 12th and anything that I want him to go searching for in Cecil Co., MD, he had the whole summer to look for it. That is payment enough for me with a big smile from AZ as MD is a long way off and he is in the best location to help a lot of Kilgore's. He also told me that he had a friend with 60,000 people listed in his data base on Cecil Co., MD and that he can work with that person. What a way to be paid for being helpful. Gail

    3. Thanks RoseMary, when I made the decision to post Robert's message it was only because if there was some information in his work that might be of help to someone, I did not want to be the one that held back info that someone might really need but I just wanted everyone to know how he operated with a lot of mail lists and that he did charge for his info. He has been very pleasant with me, when I told him that this list was closed. I have NO problems with him but I just have to abide by the rules set forth when we become list administrators. So when I posted the message, which I could have deleted, I just wanted everyone to know. My Alexander mail list is one that he posted to and then unsubbed and then the next thing Joe Blow is asking for a lookup in his work.. well, we know that he is not going to do that... he wasn't there anymore. Everyone has to make their own decision about him and his work and if it is valuable to them, then they can contact him and proceed. If it is not valuable to anyone, they can do what I did, hit the delete button. I like so many others have found information and I believe in sharing not charging. If there is mega copying to be made at 5 cents a copy, I believe you said that you got 147 pages, that adds up to $7.35 plus postage and most people are willing to share the cost of copying and postage to get the info. But, what I see is he made about $15.00 on your transaction. I don't know that I have ever asked to be reimbursed for my copying and time and postage as I am willing to share my info and I hope that others will share theirs too and I give them the credits in my work. Many, many people have sent me info and never asked for money and so I feel guilty if I ask for money. You get what you give in life and I get just as much satisfaction helping someone link to their lines and helping them move forward and I get excited when ever I get just a new date to add to my work. Yesterday, I received an email asking if I had any information on this man's line. I had some, but not all that he was looking for, BUT my greatest satisfaction out of our email's was I was able to tell him that he had a 4th cousin living in the town that he lived in and that he should contact her and together they may be able to work on the info that he needed. If he feels like sharing dates with me fine, if not, I got the chance to help someone and also to introduce him to a cousin he did not know he had. That makes my day!! Gail

Seems they aren't in the archives. I may have received them from a Civil War ring I used to be part of. These were letters from a confederate soldier (name of Hicks) to his wife back home. These letters have a way of bridging the time and setting you in that place like none other I can recall. If memory serves, the sender was a wonderful lady, Josephine Bass?
