My brick wall is John Gray. It is said but not really known that John's father might have been a Walter Gray. I have heard rumors that Walter Gray may have been one of about four Gray brothers that migrated from PA. My ancestor stopped in Virginia where John was born. It is rumored that the other Gray brothers moved further south into Kentucky. There are numerous Kilgore marriages in my Grays. And eventually some of John's children/grandchildren moved to Kentucky. Some moved to Ohio. John was born abt 1776 in VA and married Martha Broadwater about 1805. John's daughter, Elizabeth, married Robert Kilgore III, March 1813. I have been told that Nancy Gray (supposedly John's sister) married Ralph Kilgore about 1798. It is also said that John's niece married Charles Kilgore. These would all be descendents of this mysterious Walter Gray who seperated from his brothers in VA while they traveled further. If anyone can give me any information or confirmation of any of my data, it would be very much appreciated. I have been at this brick wall for years! I thought I should tell you about scotlandspeople.org if you haven't heard of it. It is a Scottish government site where you can search census records, birth, marr. death records and wills. You purchase credits which you then use for searching. The more you know about the person the easier to narrow down the correct records. I had one credit left from my last session so thought I would see if I could find the marriage of John and Cecilia. It is there for Sept. 29, 1845 as the one post said. It then costs 5 credits to see the actual marriage entry. You can purchase 30 credits for 6 pounds....not sure what that is in Australian dollars. You then search a birth say, and if you know the date it is easier, if not you narrow down as much as possible , you do not use a credit until you choose one record or page to see - a page may have a listing of several entries which you can then choose from. If there is one you think is yours it will then cost the 5 credits to see. But for instance for John and Cecilia's marriage it would be well worth the 5 credits. If you started with their marriage you would then have the names of their parents and can work back from there. Also you would have their ages which would help to find John's birth record. If you have a printer it is a good idea to print each record out. Also all of your searches and viewed records are kept on Scotlandspeope site for you. You can go back and look at them anytime and you do not pay again. It is a great site. You see the actual records - usually hand written - copied from the Parish records. This is much cheaper than sending for each record and faster too. I have found many records there for my ancestors. It is great to see the actual entries. Generally a birth record will show date and place of birth, the parents names,(including mother's maiden name) when they were married and where, their occupations. Marraige records generally show date and place of marriage, ages of bride and groom along with their addresses and occupations, names of parents with occupations. Death - date and place of death, occupation, husband or wife's name, name of who was present at death The Scots are very thorough with their records and I found often one record would lead me to another. I promise this is the last message from me until I hear from you again :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It has Priscilla Adelaide Phillips born Nov. 13, 1859 Wombat, Victoria, Australia died 1893 Rochester, Victoria, Australis married John Kilgour 1880 Victoria, Australia (says John, not James - could James have had first or middle name John?) John - born 1854, Melbourne Father: John born 1820 Edinburgh Scotland married 1853 Melbourne to: Cecelia Brown Hyne - born 1824 Edinburgh So, if this person is right John born 1820 would be the immigrant to Aust. This page shows the children of John and Pricsilla and they mostly match with names you gave. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=search_all1.asp&clear_form=true This next page shows birth date and paretns of Cecelia Brown Hyne http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=search_all1.asp&clear_form=true all of the above pages are from familysearch.org It is a free site to search I was trying to find parents of John (James?) Kilgour for you. Also, to see if he was shown born anywhere else as I have found family trees posted are not always correct. My guess is that he or his father/grandfather would have come from Fife as that is where most Kilgours originated. Vickie, Do you get the publications from the Delta Genealogical Society of Rossville, GA? If not, in the Winter issue there is a list of Estate Records from the DeKalb Co, Ft Payne, Ala court house and listed is James Kilgore. These are estate records from 1836 - 1929. I have not been researching lately so am not aware of all that is online these days at the different Counties. I hope to get more active soon and am still looking for Mary Avarilla (Jane) Kilgore's parents and siblings. You had mentioned Thomas so I will concentrate on him even though I know you have searched thoroughly. I need to go through my notes and court records again to refresh my memory. Squire Grant (a person) either granted or transferred title to Thomas Kilgore. Apparently some land grants were fraudulently granted and Thomas Kilgore appears to have been a recipient. A request to Kilgore cousins: I was grateful that Randy Baker sent these 2002 instructions for searching the archives. I tried to use these steps but the windows that opened seemed to have different boxes that did not match these instructions. I may have misunderstood them, but my impression was that the process for the search has been updated so it does not match the process in 2002. I tried to email to Randy, but the email was returned. Could someone give me updated instructions for searching the Kilgore-L archives, please?
