Last summer a celebration and re-opening of the cemetery occurred, and it is beautiful, a real miracle of turning a derelict cemetery back into the burial place of well-loved people. Mathew Kilgore. He was born in 1801 in Ohio and lived there until 1827. He moved to Indiana, then to Lee County, Iowa, where he was a supervisor for three years. He moved to Santa Clara County (CA) in 1853 and to Sacramento County in 1855. He lived fifteen miles from Sacramento on the Placerville Road and owned 154 acres of land. He married Masa McGuire of Ohio in 1822 and they had five sons and three daughters. Three sons, two daughters and his wife had all died prior to publication of the above referenced book, Mrs. Kilgore having died April 8, 1875. This is from Thompson and West's History of Sacramento, California (1880) You can find a list of those buried in this cemetery here http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~casags/SacCem_mattkilgore.htm If anyone has someone buried here, I would be happy to document the site and photograph stones. Author: nsbrown835 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.kilgore/1059.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The source for the date "spring 1790" is contained in a published letter from Park Stewart to his cousin Orla Stewart written in 1934. It is my speculation that the Stewarts, Grays and Kilgores are part of a party Park Stewart mentioned in his rememberance of family oral history. John Gray married Joseph and Levinah's daughter. I am not sure that the 1790 date is exactly right. The Joseph Stewart that I believed came to the Maysville area was living for some time in Washington/Greene counties PA. However, if I have located the correct Joseph Stewart, he also appears in the 1790 Morgan Township census, and that census was conducted in August of 1790. That means either "Spring" is incorrect, or "1790" is incorrect. Presently, I am trying to verify that this Joseph Stewart who is in Morgan Township as early as 1782, is the Joseph of my family. I would appreciate any Gray/Kilgore help anyone might have. Stewart Brown Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
