Hi Judy, I have a receipe for making soap using glycerine and you don't have to mess with the lye. I have to take mother to the doctor now, but will get back to you with it later today. Mary
Joanne, We are all God's children and each of us have been given a path to follow. I would never judge another's religion. God is the only one who has the privilege of judging. We all love you. Mary

I wanted to share with you all looking for your missing ancestors. My ++Great Grandfather was Alvin Sturgill s/o Lewis Sturgill and Sarah Hanks Sturgill. Grandfather Alvin married Nancy Jane Fraley d/o Isaac Oliver and Catherine Shoemaker Fraley on Feb. 14th, 1830 in Lawrence Co., KY. Alvin and Nancy were the parents of 9 children. Both came from well respected and well established families. Sometime between the 1880 and 1890 census Alvin and Nancy Jane Fraley Sturgill disappeared. I have spent hours wondering how this could happen. They came from large families---they lived near their children and grandchildren---but they are lost to history. We have no idea where they are buried or how or when they died. Here is my biggest question---why did no one notice they were gone! The rest of our Fraley/Sturgill family's resting places are known--and also the causes of their deaths---so what happened to Alvin and Nancy? I try to put them out of my mind---but not my heart---and accept that they just disappeared. Ramona

Hello All! Please let me know if you are doing research on the families we would like to find. I need to know what is left to do to help those looking for lost ancestors find their roots. Thank you, Ramona
Looking for William and Mary FANNIN STURGILL. They are in the 1910 Census in Floyd County; please look for other Sturgill and Fannin Families in Floyd and surrounding counties. Children of William and Mary FANNIN STURGILL: Verner 29 Elbert 18 Silas 16 Sarah 13 Cora 11 Charlie 7 Fonzo 3 These are very unusual given names--please look for families living near William and Mary with children having the same fist names. Thank you, Ramona
By definition, soap is made by the saponification (chemical combination) of lye, water, and fat. One soap will differ from the next depending on the kind of fat, the kind of lye, and how much of each is used. Lye made from wood ash, for example, produces soft soap; soap made from commercial lye (sodium hydroxide) will be hard. Soaps containing coconut oil tend to lather well in cold water but may be drying to the skin; super fatted soaps ( such as castile) that contain excess amounts of unsaponified fat are particularly gentle and make excellent toilet soap. The above comes from my "Back to Basics" book, by Reader's Digest. I believe that the lye is used to make the soap, but by the time the soap itself is formed, the lye has dissipated. If you get a castile soap from a "homemade" source so wood ash lye has been used, I believe it would be the most safe. Additionally, there are some plants that are natural cleaners: American Indians and early settlers were familiar with a number of plants whose roots, leaves, or berries contain saponin, a natural ingredient that foams and cleans like soap. The best known and most frequently used of these plants is soapwort, or bouncing bet, a pink-blossomed perennial that grows wild throughout the United States; the juice from the root produces a lather when mixed with water. Another soap plant is the yucca found in Mexico and the Southwest. Its roots, broken into pieces and mixed with water, form a gentle soaplike compound for the skin and hair. California soap root, a member of the lily family, contains a liquid in the middle of its bulb that makes an excellent antidandruff shampoo; simply crush the bulb center and mix it with water. The fleshy berries of both the southern soapberry tree, found in southern Florida as well as South America, and the western soapberry tree of the American Southwest, contain seeds that produce lather in water and closely duplicate the cleansing action of soap. Again, this is from "Back to Basics". You might try checking at a local natural foods place to see if there are any soaps available from these plants commercially. If not, let me know, and I will check at the store near me that carries similar items. Hi List,,,,,,ummm, is'nt it wonderful that we found such a great list to share our thoughts plus stories, legends and ghostly tales. I want to say Lets keep our religious name brands to a real quiet mode. I suspect with all the great people on our list that we may have a whole toe sack full of Brand Names.....and none are out to hurt others feelings. From the tone of some of our friends her there are some extra sensitive ladies that just love the world and all that is in it. I just give a"Thank you God" each morning when I se the Ky name one the list. I know I'm in for a treat of sharing with friends. Now. Ramona , you wanted us to share whats on our minds that was on mine. We will all hold in our prayers any and all in the path of Floyd. A C-5 is = to an Rictor # 6 or 7 . I am told and depending on some weather paterns it can be = to an 8 earth quake. I was in the 1889 San Francisco quake. Makes the old heart beat faster and a deep thought to God I'm right here, do You see me?. It may not be the place to give laurels but I'm sure most of us are old enough to have had some experiences that caused some extra gray hairs or two. The telephone service in the Bay Area was absuletly inspiring. they would allow calls in for a time set (? 3 min?) then allow calls out for a time. My son was in New York and not more than 10 minutes he was inquiring on my phone. We were cut off after just moments. Good people all over te world...............Liv.
Joann, You are truly a wonderful person. Thank you for your post. I've read on here that you take in little children who are in trouble medical wise and care for them and I know it really takes a special person for that. Not that many people could handle that. We adopted a perfectly healthy 9-year-old 25 years ago. It was hard enough on us adopting an older child--I don't believe I could have taken on even 1 with medical problems. My hat's off to you. By the way, that older child that we adopted has given us 4 beautiful grandchildren! I'm sorry that some people have (apparently) said some hurtful things to you (not from this list) because you're Morman. I'm a member of the Reformed Church up here, but to borrow from an old phrase, we're all members of the human race. It just so happens that you have been blessed with an extraordinary amount of goodness and kindness. Dolores
Lynn, Thank you for the information. Since I live in the Southwest, maybe I can find Yucca soap. Judy
