    1. [KENTUCKY-LEGENDS AND FOLKLORE] Soap making
    2. Hi Judy, I dug out my books on glycerine soap making and the books I have are: Soothing soaps for Healthy Skin by Sandy Maine and Soaps, Shampoos and other Suds by Kelly Reno. There are lot of receipes in them. There is also a soap maker site that is a fun site that is really active with lots of fun receipes and the URL is : www.greencottage.com/soap/Mand P. You can buy the glycerin bars at a health food store, craft store, or from a local soapmaker. I melt my bars in a double boiler and use a candle thermometer so as not to get the glycerin too hot. No higher than 160 degrees. Here is a great coffee lovers soap: Coffe & Cream Soap 2tsp coffee beans (can replace with 1tsp instant espresso) 4 oz melted glycerin base 1 tsp heavy whipping cream 1 tsp aloe vera gel Melt the glycerin. Remove from heat and add the ground coffee, whipping cream, and aloe vera gel, stirring until well blended. Pour the mixture into a mold and let set for three hours or until hardened. The ladies on the web site that I gave you are very helpful and have come up with some very unique ideas. Mary

    3. Hi, Thanks for the soap tips. I also found the HGTV site and copied a couple of things from them. I would like to make some for my daughters for Christmas. Ramona-a book list of heplful genealogy books would be great to have. The librarians at my local FHC are a fantastic bunch,(I am not LDS). They are so helpful, especially the head librarian, who is also researching my maiden name. She is always asking what new books would be helpful to our research. She will put a film on indefinite loan is she thinks many will benefit. For a small FHC, there is a ton of information there. Thank You All! 3. Good Morning Leona, A Branch of the STURGILL FAMILY Volume 1 Descendants of Francis Sturgill SR. and Rebecca Hash. Some Branches of the STURGILL FAMILY Volume 2-Descendants of AMBROSE-JOHN-JAMES-and LEWIS STURGILL. "While they last, copies of this book may be obtained from" David Andrew Sturgill Rt. 1 Box 211 Piney Creek, NC 28663 I don't think he has any copies left but you could call him and ask. David's phone # 919-359-2280. I hope this helps Leona---his books are not 100% correct; but they are well researched. I don't think any genealogy book is 100% correct---especially those concerned with Southern Families. Too many records both public and private were lost during the Civil War. Out side of the real tradgedy of people...........odd things happen,,,,,I like to think Gods way of reminding us he is much more capable than I..........When the quake hit the San Francisco area in 1989....where the Nimitz freeway collapsed near it a store that sold exotic snakes lost 200 I wonder if any was ever found...........what was called "the old post office" an old smaller one that was in that area, was hit also, I had mailed my dues to a club in the day before the quake....the club didn't get the mail on checking the smaller po was a station where much mail was sorted. ........It was within a week I heard from the club that my dues had been paid. ......... I lived in a town that had surrounded and swollowed up a farming area of long age.......but this one farm area ? acre? had 2 goats and some chickens.....the cjickens crowed at noon or at 10 AM or 2 PM months before the quake. After the quake it was more like 5 AM. ..........wonder what we will hear after Floyd is gone? Is Gert still ther also? i did'nt look at the news yet. A happy Day to all of you

    2. Dearest Joann - I wanted to let you know that I have the highest respect for the Mormon religion and for the people who live by it. It takes a great deal of commitment and self-discipline to dedicate oneself to the Mormon religion. These are two very valuable qualities which I admire. I often go to the LDS library for research. I am very happy that the Mormons have created such a wonderful resource and are so willing to share it. I have learned so much from the volunteers there who are always helpful and very patient. As soon as I get just a few more things entered to my data base I will be submitting my tree to the LDS data base. I appreciate that, even though I am not a Mormon, that my family information will be held and protected in their data base until such time as my great, great, great, great granddaughter is ready to access it. I thank you for being the lovely caring, sharing person that you are. Sherrie in San Diego Joanne wrote: I appreciate the fact that I am accepted with you all knowing I am a Mormon. There are alot of wrong ideas and misconceptions out there about Mormons and it is nice to know that many of you are using the genealogy libraries and not offended at me, because I am LDS. I consider all of you my good friends. Because of my children's medical problems, I have little contact with the outside world and you all have opened up a new and wonderful world to me.

    2. Mary - Well said. The validity of any piece of information is subject to the judgment of each individual genealogist. Sherrie in San Diego In a message dated 09/13/1999 6:42:16 PM Pacific Daylight Time, Mbdiggin@aol.com writes: << Joann, Do not be concerned about offending anyone when your offer was genuine and from the heart. I can speak only for myself, but, how can we really prove any documentation that we use to verify our ancestors. I have found original census records to be wrong due to the inability to spell names correctly, or because someone might have given the wrong information to the census taker for whatever reason, death cerificates wrong because the person giving the information gave a wrong maiden name or spouses name. The ONLY way we can know for sure is to have known the person while they were alive and I found out the hard way that is not always 100% either. My daughter was married to a man for 13 years and had 4 children by him only to discover he had used an alias when she met & married him. So this man that I knew as one name for 13 years really had another birth name, and the name that he used, I found to be of a person who was still living that he had stolen his identity from. Talk about problems with the IRS, the real person had them. Sorry to get off on this personal stuff, but wanted to use a good example to show why nothing is certain, sometimes even if you know them personally. And thanks again for passing on any information you think might be of help to others. Mary >>

    3. Judy, Check out HGTV, the Carol Duvall List. A few weeks ago a lady made soaps on her show. She used glycerine. Beautiful soaps. They had color added and were put in ice cube trays, then popped out. Then the different colored cubes were tossed into a container, white mixture added. The soap hardened, then was sliced about 3/4-inch thick with colors that look like multi-colored geometric slices--if you know what I mean. You've probably seen them in some of your stores. 2. Pat Oneal
    3. Ghost tales: I just happened to buy a book yesterday, cause it was a good deal- $3.00. I thought it was a compilation of short stories. Discovered most of it is a true story about a family in Robertson County, TN, and the ghosts that haunted their house for 4 years in early 1800s. The ghosts pulled the children's hair, twisted it, and pulled covers off the beds. Finally, after inviting a neighbor over to spend the night, the neighbor suggested they try talking to the ghosts. The ghosts talked to them. (This is a really wierd tale, and I can't help but think it has been tremendously fabricated, but who am I to say!!) I haven't read much but this is the strangest bunch of ghosts I've ever heard of. People visited from far and near to experience the ghosts. Ghosts never disappointed them. They would take on the voices of the people in the home, or the people they were talking to. I'll let you know how it turns out. Some of you may already be familiar with this tale. pat -----Original Message----- From: Ramona <kywy@zoomnet.net> To: KENTUCKY-LEGENDS-L@folklore.rootsweb.com <KENTUCKY-LEGENDS-L@folklore.rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, September 14, 1999 9:45 PM Subject: [KENTUCKY-LEGENDS AND FOLKLORE] SOME ONE TELL A TALE OR SOMETHING >Hi Liv, >Would you tell us another ghostly tale--anyone else have a tale to tell >that will take our minds off this worry. >Jump right in if you can think of anything. >Thank you, >Ramona > > >

    3. As far as I know, Corbin just happened to be split by the three counties. If you get picked up for speeding at the Shopping Center, you go to Barbourville courthouse. If you get arrested at WalMart on the bypass, you go to court in London. If you get caught for shoplifting in south Corbin, you go to court in Williamsburg, KY. That's all I can tell you.......... The church took up a grievance against brother John Williams for writing a letter to Lewis Wyatt. After writing the said letter he was instructed that it was wrong and then he still forward it on. Also saying that while Lewis Wyatt was hunting for his shoat that Hudson Jones was cracking the bones and eating the meat and denying it. July 9th, 1855 Brother James Sturgill died strong in the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ. I treasure these old records. Ramona

    1. [KENTUCKY-LEGENDS AND FOLKLORE] Soapmaking
    2. Sherry Arlotta
    3. Hi Everyone, This past week I've been thinking about gifts I'm going to make for Christmas. Besides doing some sewing, think I'd like to give soapmaking a try. Since I have sensitive skin myself, thought I'd do the glycerin soaps. While visiting my son in California, I got some clear homemade soaps that had been molded in some sort of loaf mold, then sliced to the size you want. They are very clear and pretty and feel wonderful on my skin. Yesterday I ordered a book from amazon.com on transparent soapmaking so I can see if I really want to attempt this or not. Earlier this week while surfing for information about soapmaking, I found the following sites that might be helpful to the others interested in this. Here's the url for a website that has all sorts of soapmaking supplies, etc. http://www.suncoastsoaps.com/ This webpage tells how to make glycerin soap. Actually sounds pretty easy. http://www.conknet.com/~p_bliss/glycerin.htm Today I called the Forkland Community Center in Gravel Switch, KY. It's always such a pleasure calling KY; the people are always so friendly and seem to enjoy chatting. I had my fingers crossed that they would have a copy of the book "Forkland Heritage". I thought they might since their festival is coming up and sure enough, they had some for sale. My copy will be arriving probably in a couple of weeks, so if anyone is looking for an ancestor from that particular area of KY, I'd be happy to do lookups once I get the book. To all those in the path of Floyd, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Sherry in Arizona
