Clara: Your very first stop in Washington County absolutely MUST be the: John Hay Center Genealogical Library (Stevens Museum) 307 East Market Street Salem, Indiana 47167 812-883-6495 (No fee; donations accepted) I think the library is open Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays, but I suggest you call ahead to confirm the hours. There are signs on the main drag through town pointing the way to the Hay Center. I personally would suggest going there before hitting the courthouse, etc. For others on the KENTUCKIANA list, if you haven't been to the Hay Center and either live here in Southern Indiana or will be visiting here, this is a tremendous resource that you should make plans to see for yourself.
