    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] WASHINGTON CO, IN CATHOLIC CHURCH

    3. Hi Clara and All, According to the HOOSIER JOURNAL OF ANCESTRY, Washington Co. Special by Naomi Keith Sexton, HISTORY--CHURCHES, pg. 9 The only ROMAN CATHOLIC church organization that ever existed in the county was in Salem. In 1856 a brick church was built and the same was dedicated by Bishop M. J. Spaulding, of Louisville, KY on 2 June 1857. At that date the church had considerable following in and around Salem and Fathers Murphy, Neeron, Doyle, Gintz, Pensor, Kintrip, Dick and Kenneth served as priests at various times. A cemetery was purchased and laid out on the north of Crown Hill. But those who were once active in this church work moved away or died until there was little following left and about 1895 the church and block was sold to private parties. Hope this helps.
