    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] Silver Creek Baptist Church > Stony Point Christian Church, Charlestown, Indiana (Clark Co.)

    3. The Bicentennial History of the first Protestant church established in the State of Indiana is going to press next week. Just some last minute proofreading and editing left to do. Silver Creek Baptist Church was organized on November 22, 1798 near Charlestown in Clark County (across the river from Louisville, KY). In 1829, the congregation chose to abandon the Baptist Articles of Faith and became an independent church, the name eventually changing in the 1880s to Stony Point Christian Church. It was at one time considered "the mother church" of Baptist congregations throughout Southern Indiana and was the leading congregation of the now-defunct Silver Creek Baptist Association. The book is presently 116 pages and covers the 200-year history of the church, 5 picture pages, several extensive biographies and more than 50 pages of abstracted church records, indexed by surname. The surname index alone is 6 pages long. The church records have never been published before and provide a treasure trove of genealogical and local history information for a geographic area that offers little in the way of public records for the first half of the 1800s. If you've got ancestors who were in Clark County very early in the 1800s, there is an excellent chance the surname is mentioned in this book. Lots of references to So-and-So being received as a member of the Church; many references to So-and-So, formerly Such-and-Such; numerous "obituaries" indicating Members' death dates. There are NO marriage records included in the original records. (I've posted the current Surname Index to a webpage linkable from the URL below.) If you'd like to order a copy of the book (purchase price $20), there is an Order Form at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/5881/OrderForm.html The proceeds from the sale of the book will exclusively benefit the Stony Point Building Fund as we undertake the construction of a Fellowship Hall adjacent to the meeting house, built in 1858. PLEASE don't ask me to do look-ups right now. I am really under the gun at the moment with last-minute proofing and editing the book, getting ready for publication and getting ready for our big Bicentennial Celebration on November 22. Perhaps I can help you after Thanksgiving. BTW, if you live in the area, you are cordially invited to join us on Sunday afternoon, November 22, at 3 PM for a special Bicentennial program, gospel concert and reception. A map and more details are available at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/5881/BicentennialNewsRelea se.html Thank you. Lois Mauk
