My own research has been concentrated in the Meade County area, and my database includes all the names listed above with the exception of PECKINPAUGH and CRAWFORD (I actually have CRAWFORD, but not from the early Kentuckiana area). Of course, my PAYNE ancestors, the earliest being James PAYNE who m. Elizabeth _________, present in Hardin (pre-Meade) Co., KY by about 1807 (on tax lists there), were found in Meade County. I recently formed a SHACKLETT-L surname mailing list, which is still rather small (18 of us presently). Please join us if you are a SHACKLETT researcher! Almost all SHACKLETTs in America are related by virtue of their common immigrant ancestor, Benjamin SHACKLETT (1710 in France - 1784 in PA) who m. Sarah BLANCETTE in 1733. His father was John SHACKLET/SHACKALIT/SHAKERLY (1678 in France - 1717/18 in Charles Co., MD) who m. Mary _____. John's surname evolved from his French name, thought by many researchers over the years to be Jenade JACQUELOT. Some of us, including yours truly, now believe his name to have been Jean De JACQUELOT, this having resulted from recent contacts with members of the JACQUELOT family in France, two of whom are subscribers to SHACKLETT-L. The SHACKLETTs, those descending from John (son of Benjamin mentioned above) & his wife Barbara QUICK, were prolific pioneers in Hardin/Meade Co., KY. If anyone can help with James & Elizabeth PAYNE mentioned above, please contact me! One possibility, which I will mention here is that they COULD be the James PAYNE and Elizabeth HUDSON who m. 15 Jun 1785 in Dorchester Co., MD. Why? Because a great-granddaughter was named Blanche Hudson PAYNE, with no known reason for the middle name, by parents who followed a pattern of naming their children after ancestors. Also, there was a John HUDSON found in the 1810 census of Hardin Co., KY close (adjacent, I believe) to the family of James PAYNE. James & Elizabeth were known to have had the following children: Lewis, Thomas, Richard (my ancestor), Elizabeth and Sabrina (Sarah). On 13 Jul 1818, James PAYN (sic) was named as one of the account holders in the settlement of the estate of William WITHERS. James' son Lewis PAYNE m. (I) Summerville WITHERS, dau. of Elizabeth WITHERS, on 1 Feb 1819 in Meade Co. I have wondered if Elizabeth was perhaps the wife of William, but have no proof of same. I should mention that I also manage the PAYNE-L mailing list, a comparatively large list with 390 subscribers at present. PAYNE researchers are always welcomed. BJGFL, I would like to exchange information with you. I know many AOLers and some others, too, make a practice of using just their screen name, but may I encourage all to share their real name when corresponding on genealogy lists? :)) It's always nice to know the name of the person to whom we are writing! Thanks in advance to any help from any direction!
