There is a large area in western KY called the Western KY Coalfield that extends northward into southern IN and IL. (My dad used to fish the 'Stripper Pits' in Warrick Co., IN. These were the abandoned strip mining 'pits' that filled with water and were stocked with fish (crappie and blue gill) when there was no more coal to be had.)
