The following information was sent to me in response to a request to the Indiana Historical Society. I hope it is of help even though the subject has not been further addressed on the list. Virginia Brown "Thank you for your request. There is the Madison State Hospital, located in North Madison. The hospital was authorized by the legislature on February 21, 1905, under the name Southeastern Hospital for the Insane. Construction began in 1906 and patients were received in 1910. Original capacity was 1,100 beds. In 1927, the name was changed to Madison State Hospital. The hospital is still in operation. Their website is: http://www.in.gov/fssa/msh/ There was also a county asylum located 1 ½ miles outside of Madison. It housed poor, mental patients, and a few children. We have an 1890 report that provides a brief description of the home. The report can be viewed in our library. We are open Tuesday-Saturday from 10-5. Thank you for contacting the Indiana Historical Society."
