    1. UNDERWOOD, 1805
    2. Billie, Thank you for your prompt reply. From documents I have concerning the persons who purchased John UNDERWOOD'S land, in Hancock Co IN and the person to whom he bound out his children, it is likely John was from the MD clan. Victor DIFFEY, from Baltimore, MD purchased John's land in Hancock Co IN, after the death of my gg-grandfather, Thomas KENNEDY, who had purchased 6+ acres from John UNDERWOOD'S dau. Mary Ann, in 1864, and was the widow of Aaron SMITH who died in the civil war. This is very complicated, but Mary Ann Underwood SMITH, step-grandddau. of Thomas KENNEDY lived on that land in a dwelling with Thomas KENNEDY for at least 12 years -- Thomas d. 1876. Mary Ann Underwood SMITH removed to Rice Co., KS, in 1876. Her brother, John, was all ready there with his second wife, Margaret Dickson UNDERWOOD. A Jonathan BURRIS is listed on the same page as John UNDERWOOD in Shelby Co, KY 1820 or 1830...most likely 1830 as J. UNDERWOOD was b. abt. 1805. A Jonathan BURRIS was to care for the two sons of John UNDERWOOD, beginning in 1842...evidently, the boys' mother (Mary *Ann*) died in 1842 ( per tombstone) in Hancock Co IN. My g-grandmother mar. widower John in 1847. John UNDERWOOD d. Dec.1858. I have a document which shows that he and my g-grandmother donated one acre of land for a church, United Brethren in Christ, Union Chapel, to be built; this document is dated 7 Jan.1858. Mary Jane then mar. Frederick HENDRICKS, in 1859. They are my g-grandparents. Almost forgot, John UNDERWOOD'S land patent shows he was living in Harrison Co KY when he purchased his land in Hancock Co IN, 20 March, 1837. He and first wife, Mary *Ann*, sold to Adam POCK of Harrison Co KY, 40 acres 6 Nov. 1837. John had originally purchased 160 acres. I am wondering whether the cash for the acreage was part of his wife's inheritance from a John or James ADAMS, who may have been her grandfather. Hope someone/anyone who reads this may be a descendant of the above persons. Mary Ann Underwood SMITH removed to Rice Co., KS, in 1872. Hope you got through the hurricane without a problem Virgene in northwest Indiana My Underwoods begin with Thomas the immigrant who first went to Virginia and then to Maryland where he died but left descendants in Md. Pa. NC VA and points beyond. I didn't carry the generations through all of the counties or up to the current generations.
