    3. I do Believe that the person that stated the Asylum in Louisville was Central State was correct. I know my sister called them and even after my grandfather passed in 1972 they still have his records. But they want a court order to get them. We are working with the UAW to get those records due to Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression) being so prevalent in our family and it being genetic. We would like to see how they treated him and with what. What he might have been labled with besides just insane. They probably changed the name over the years to this Asylum. Don't think there still is, but not sure. Since it was a state facility, there may by some state records about it. The only poor house I know if was in Scottsburg. It now belongs to, and houses, the Scott County Genealogical Society. I believe, not certain - but almost -, that there were such facilities in all counties. It was the county government response to the underprivileged of the day. These existed until somewhere in the 1940's. My grandfather and both of his sisters ended up there from what we believe was Bipolar Disorder. This Asylum is still there and you can still order records from them if they still have them. I want to say this Asylums name is Louisville Cental Asylum but am not for sure. But I do believe it is located in a phone book of that area. My cousin was put there for killing Judge Thomas M. Elliott on March 26, 1879. Because of the notoriety of the murder Tom had two trials. The second one finally proved him insane so as to save him from the hangman. He died there in 1885. I never have found out where he was buried and was never able to get his records from the hospital. Even after so long a time they don't seem to want to give them up.
