    3. I can use all the help I can get finding this family. These people give new meaning to the term - Brick Wall! My grandfather - Andrew Phillips - suddenly appeared on this earth about 1865 at the age of 10. I don't really know where he came from or who his parents were. He was admitted to the House of Refuge in Louivsille in mid 1865. According to census records he was still living there in the 1870 - age 15. He always told everyone he was born in TN in 1855 - but he also told people his mother moved to 'the adjacent city of Louisville' in about 1862, after his father was killed in the civil war. I do not believe any place in TN could be considered adjacent to Louisville, so if he was born in TN, his family must have moved closer to the Louisville area after his birth. I cannot find him or his family in the 1860 census. His mother died shortly after their move into Louisville - probably about 1863. We believe Andrew had a brother - John - who was just a few years old! er. There is also a sister but her name is unknown. Does anyone have a missing branch in their Phillips family tree where a relative might have had a brother, uncle, nephew, or such that might have been killed in the civil war leaving a wife and three small children someplace in the Louisville area? Or maybe you have a distant relative (Phillips) who just disappeared about this time that fits this description. If so, I would love to hear from you. Maybe someone out there has just the piece I need to finish this puzzle. Thanks, Lee

    3. Lee, If the husband was killed in the Civil War, have you checked to see whether anyone applied for a pension on his name? Pension applications can contain a lot of good facts.
