    1. Re: [KENTUCKIANA-L] Legacy vs FTW 2005
    2. In a message dated 8/31/2004 11:15:47 AM Eastern Standard Time, akacejay@comcast.net writes: I just bought the new FTW 2005 and was very impressed with it, although it still has the deficiency that made me change to Legacy, sourcing your new entries. Legacy is far superior in its ease of sourcing, FTW is much more cumbersome. (At least it was, I haven't used the new version to check extensively, only cursorily have checked.) Gary, From what I have read this is one of the "major" improvements of FTM 2005. Below is an article that was from the "Eastman Online Genealogy Newsletter for FTM 2005" "I entered data about a few individuals into the database and found that data entry was simple. Best of all, beside every entry field for name, birth place, and death place, there is an icon for a source citation. Click on that icon, and a pop-up window appears for entering the title of the source, the citation page, and text, author, publication facts, call number, source quality, researcher's comments about this source, and even a capability for inserting an image of the source citation. Do you have a scanned image of a marriage record or a census entry? If so, you can enter that image as part of the source citation. That is an excellent method of citing one's sources!" To me the last part is the best of all. Now you not only can add more to the source citation BUT, you can even add a scanned image of that citation. This is a great upgrade for FTM. 1. Legacy vs FTW 2005
    2. Carole Martin Hada
    3. I just sent this to the Breckenridge list, but perhaps everyone isn't signed up for that list so I'm adding my input here as well. lynnhada@comcast.net Although my wife and I have used Legacy for several years now, formerly we used Family Tree Maker for Windows (FTW) exclusively and I was a beta tester for each new version of the software for several years until this year. I was not a tester for FTW 2005. I guess I didn't get invited to do the testing this year because I was on vacation last year during the beta testing and did not contribute too much. Anyway, I use the Deluxe version of Legacy and am perfectly satisfied with it except for trying to print out big family trees. Legacy cannot print trees; there is another program that will take your Legacy file and make a tree. It doesn't work all that well and is more expensive than upgrading to FTW. Due to this weakness in the Legacy program, every two years before my wife's family reunion, we have to export her file from Legacy to a GEDCOM and import the GEDCOM into FTW to print a tree. Of course GEDCOM files don't export the pictures and so we have to relink all the pictures after the export/import. Not fun! We always mount the tree on a wall at the family reunion. This year's tree was 4 feet tall and 30 feet long. The family is growing!!! I just bought the new FTW 2005 and was very impressed with it, although it still has the deficiency that made me change to Legacy, sourcing your new entries. Legacy is far superior in its ease of sourcing, FTW is much more cumbersome. (At least it was, I haven't used the new version to check extensively, only cursorily have checked.) It really almost comes down to what you intend to do and cost, Legacy is cheaper but FTW is not all that much more expensive any more and the upgrade was only $19.95 plus shipping (about $27 total) this time. Of course, the initial cost is higher. Legacy Basic is free and Deluxe Legacy is only 14.95 downloaded with no shipping costs. If you're not sure, you can try the Legacy Basic for free as long as you like and then decide if you like it. I notice that FTW has copied a lot of things in its latest version that Legacy has had for a while. OK, that's my 2 cents. Gary Lynn Hada (sitting at my wife's computer)

    2. The intent of my message regarding FTM 2005 was to inform about the difference. FTM 2005 is not just another version but a revamped program. I use FTM and intend to continue to do so. I have no axe to grind with FTM or genealogy.com. Just wanted to be clear and helpful! W

    3. I hope the gentelman won't mind me giving you his phone number in Louisville, Ky. He is a former policman named Capt Mort Childress of Louisville, Ky. He is writing a book on the police department and maybe he can answer your question or tell you who you need to talk with. I do not have the area code for Louisville but his phone number is 574-7682. Be real nice please since he does not know I'm giving his phone number out. Of course this some five years ago but hopefully he is still there. He was able to help me with a Uncle who was a policeman in the 1800's. Hope this helps. Eileen I would like to hear this answer, also. One of my relatives was listed in an Indiana paper (in his mother's obituary) as "the well-known Louisville policeman" at about the same time frame as akacejay asks about. Thanks, S
