    1. UNDERWOOD, 1805
    2. Billie, Thank you for your prompt reply. From documents I have concerning the persons who purchased John UNDERWOOD'S land, in Hancock Co IN and the person to whom he bound out his children, it is likely John was from the MD clan. Victor DIFFEY, from Baltimore, MD purchased John's land in Hancock Co IN, after the death of my gg-grandfather, Thomas KENNEDY, who had purchased 6+ acres from John UNDERWOOD'S dau. Mary Ann, in 1864, and was the widow of Aaron SMITH who died in the civil war. This is very complicated, but Mary Ann Underwood SMITH, step-grandddau. of Thomas KENNEDY lived on that land in a dwelling with Thomas KENNEDY for at least 12 years -- Thomas d. 1876. Mary Ann Underwood SMITH removed to Rice Co., KS, in 1876. Her brother, John, was all ready there with his second wife, Margaret Dickson UNDERWOOD. A Jonathan BURRIS is listed on the same page as John UNDERWOOD in Shelby Co, KY 1820 or 1830...most likely 1830 as J. UNDERWOOD was b. abt. 1805. A Jonathan BURRIS was to care for the two sons of John UNDERWOOD, beginning in 1842...evidently, the boys' mother (Mary *Ann*) died in 1842 ( per tombstone) in Hancock Co IN. My g-grandmother mar. widower John in 1847. John UNDERWOOD d. Dec.1858. I have a document which shows that he and my g-grandmother donated one acre of land for a church, United Brethren in Christ, Union Chapel, to be built; this document is dated 7 Jan.1858. Mary Jane then mar. Frederick HENDRICKS, in 1859. They are my g-grandparents. Almost forgot, John UNDERWOOD'S land patent shows he was living in Harrison Co KY when he purchased his land in Hancock Co IN, 20 March, 1837. He and first wife, Mary *Ann*, sold to Adam POCK of Harrison Co KY, 40 acres 6 Nov. 1837. John had originally purchased 160 acres. I am wondering whether the cash for the acreage was part of his wife's inheritance from a John or James ADAMS, who may have been her grandfather. Hope someone/anyone who reads this may be a descendant of the above persons. Mary Ann Underwood SMITH removed to Rice Co., KS, in 1872. Hope you got through the hurricane without a problem Virgene in northwest Indiana My Underwoods begin with Thomas the immigrant who first went to Virginia and then to Maryland where he died but left descendants in Md. Pa. NC VA and points beyond. I didn't carry the generations through all of the counties or up to the current generations.

    3. The choice of race on the census was left to chance, mainly the census taker's opinion, not necessarily the proper choice. Often, Native Americans were listed as mulatto on the census record, to distinguish them from white. The circumstances of the the grant would be of interest to me, as this sounds very unusual for the government to grant land to Native Americans in VA or KY. Please keep us posted with your findings. 1. Tribute to Eastern Kentucky Family Historian, William "Bill" L. Vockery (Died 17 Sep 04)
    2. Doug Park - The Mystical Gravehunter
    3. All, Eastern Kentucky has lost one it's beloved family historians in William "Bill" Vockery of Richmond. He and his wife, Kathy, are probably best known for the two (2) volume Madison County Cemetery books, among many others that they researched and published. These books were invaluable to many family researchers. Bill died yesterday of cancer (Fri., 17 Sep 04). May God rest his soul. You may see a picture of Bill with my father, Wm. H. Park II and myself, Wm. D. Park, during our visit to the Vockery Home on Wed., 9 June 1999 and the following tribute at my page in the "photo section" using the following link: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/a/r/William-D-Park/ God Bless you, Bill. You’re tireless efforts in researching and publishing family history, including vital statistics on many family lines in Madison County, Kentucky, in particular, have enriched the lives of countless descendants who are now more complete—having been rooted by their discoveries of ancestors who have gone before them. We remember and pay tribute to you today and we want to say that we love you and your family. You are apart of all of us who claim to be Eastern Kentuckians—either by blood, spirit, or both. WILLIAM L. VOCKERY “A Wonderful Christian and Kentuckian” He Embraced His Family, Friends and Our Ancestors In His Love RICHMOND - William L. Vockery, died Fri., Sept. 17, 2004 from cancer. Bill was born in Partridge, KY, the son of the late William and Lola Faye (Jenkins) Vockery. He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Jo Mills, of Pineville. A 1953 graduate of Alamo Heights HS, in San Antonio, TX, Bill took a Regular Army Commission when graduating from EKU in 1957. Having served 27 years in the US Army, of which 2 and one half years were in Vietnam, Bill retired from service in 1980 as a Colonel, pursued his teaching certification, and began his second career teaching in the Richmond City Schools for 8 years. He served as counselor at Garrard Middle School for three years before retiring a 2nd time. Bill also taught at EKU's Dept. of Curriculum for a number of years. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Richmond, as well as the Habitat for Humanity board of directors. He is survived by Kathy, his loving wife of 46 years, and three children; Brenda Jones, Brentwood, MD, William of St. Joseph, MO, and Mark, of Ashland, KY. There are nine grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5-9 pm Sat. Sept. 19, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home. Services will be 3 pm Sun. at the First United Methodist Church, Richmond, with Rev. Gene Strange, Rev.
