My husband's gg-grandmother, Mary Jane ALEXANDER, was born 25 December 1805. She married Michael DURR (sometimes known as John Michael DURR) in 1824 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, and died 25 February 1870 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. She is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Jefferson Couty, Kentucky. Birth and death dates are from her tombstone. Census records indicate she was born in Kentucky. The only indication of her parentage is from her marriage bond, which gives her father's name as Joseph ALEXANDER. There is a Joseph ALEXANDER in the 1840 Jefferson County, Kentucky, census, but he's not old enough to be her father. Does anyone know anything about this ALEXANDER family? I have information about Mary Jane and Michael DURR's descendants and about Michael DURR's family if someone needs that. Thanks. Linda Cohn

I am still looking for the parents of Joseph Allen, thought to have been born in Maryland. He married Hannah Levy in New Goschenhoppen, Pennsylvania in 1798. Hannah was the daughter of David Levy and Margrethe Esbaugh. Joseph Allen and family were traveling west when they had a wagon accident near Paris, Kentucky in 1813 killing Joseph. Hannah remained in Paris with her children until her death in 1820. Joseph’s youngest son wrote quite a history of the family, but he was born after Joseph’s death and knew little or nothing about Joseph’s family. So my 30 year brick wall is finding the parents of my g.g.g. grandfather, Joseph Allen.
Carol: Descendant of that line eventually marries into Hilgert line probably in NE but I haven't figured that out yet! My Great Grandmother was a Hilgert which is where my interest in this line originated. My file starts with James Tilden Cossart, son of Henry. I have names of James' sibs but that's about all. Except this note on Henry: Henry could have lived in Northwestern Terr. of South Carolina in 1802 pg. 194 of census. This assumption is made due to the fact his second wife is from SC. 1830 Louisville, Hopkins Co., KY census shows Henry and two boys 5 - 10 and one boy 10 - 15. He also owned 5 slaves. 1840 Warren Co., OH census shows Henry (50 - 60) and 1male 5 - 10, 1male 10 - 15, 2 males 20 - 30, 1 female 0 - 5, 1 female 5 - 10, 1 female 10 - 15, and 1 female 30 - 40. This indicates his children from his first marriage and second marriage were living together at this time. Records also show that he owned 80 acres of land in Scott Co. IN in 1839 which borders Warren Co., OH.(?????from Ray Cossart) Henry is found mentioned several times in the Louisville, KY newspaper several times: Source Early Louisville, KY Newspaper Abstracts 1806-1828 by Crowder. Okay folks, with over 600 people subscribed to this list we should be having more traffic so we're going to try something different. If YOUR last name begins with the letters A, B or C please CRAFT a query regarding your "brick wall", "stumbling block" or "most wanted" KENTUCKIANA area ancestor and send it to the list. Thursday at 5:00 p.m. we will move on to those of you who have last names beginning with D, E and F. (Note: Your ancestor does not have to have a surname beginning with the same letter. Any "missing" person qualifies!) Please use subject lines effectively - name and date if known at minimum! Digest subscribers you may have deadline issues due to the way in which the digest is sent out so please add a "D" for digest along with your subject line so we know you aren't ignoring the guidelines. You are, of course, free to post your usual questions during the this time period but wanted to try to limit the strain on folks mail boxes from the "most wanted" queries which is why I'm trying the alphabetical breakdown. I'd start things off but we won't make it to the M's for some time!*smile* Thanks for your cooperation..... Pat Mount List Admin
George Combe Coatney born March 29, 1860 in Scott County, Indiana a son of George Washington Coatney and his wife Arminda Bernard Spurgeon. He married Eliza Ella McClellan on May 25 1886. Eliza Ellen McClellan Coatney died September 6, 1887 in Jeffersonville, Clarke County, Indiana less than 2 years after her marriage. I do not know why she died at such a young age and have thus far not been able to find any information on her death. She is buried in Zoah cemetery in Scott County, Indiana. Thanks in advance for any leads. Don Coatney
The following is an email on the list. It is political and I do not think it's appropriate for this to appear on the list. Florence In a message dated 10/22/2004 5:11:40 AM US Mountain Standard Time, phaydentn@adelphia.net writes: Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised: 1.) That participation in the Program would be completely voluntary, 2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual incomes into the Program, 3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year, 4.) That the money the participants put into the independent "Trust Fund" rather than into the General operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program, and, 5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income. Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month -- and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to "put away," you may be interested in the following: Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent "Trust" fund and put it into the General fund so that Congress could spend it? A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the Democratically-controlled House and Senate. Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding? A: The Democratic Party. Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities? A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the "tie-breaking" deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the U.S. Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants? A: That's right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive SSI Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it! Then, after doing all this lying and thieving and violation of the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!!!! And the worst part about it is, uninformed citizens believe it! Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions during this 2004 election year! If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and maybe good changes will evolve. How many people can YOU send this to? Keep this going clear up through the 2004 election!! Forwarded FYI -----Original Message----- From: Research and writing about Virginia genealogy and family history. [mailto:VA-ROOTS@LISTLVA.LIB.VA.US] FYI Volunteers for the National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System Web site (CWSS; http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss) have completed the Name Index Project to post 6.3 million soldier records from 44 US states and territories. After the final million names-belonging to soldiers from Virginia and Pennsylvania-were added last month, a ceremony at Ford's Theatre marked the milestone. Next up for indexing are naval personnel records, but that'll take awhile, according to the CWSS site: "Given that the records sources for the Navy are not as well organized as the Army records, nor are they microfilmed, the target date for this is still to be determined." About 18,000 African-American sailors are already cataloged on CWSS, thanks to Department of Defense funding and work by Howard University. The soldier data came from the General Index Cards in the National Archives and Records Administration's Compiled Military Service Records. CWSS also has Civil War information such as regimental histories and links to descriptions of nearly 400 significant battles. ******* Are there mistakes herein???? OF COURSE, there are!!!!!!! as do all sources !!!!! Still, this list has GREAT value.
