    3. ------ Forwarded Message From: dennis davis <dennis438@comcast.net> Date: Fri, 29 Oct 2004 19:17:32 -0600 To: KENTUCKIANA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: {not a subscriber} Missing G-G-Mother For quite a few years now I've been looking for my g-g-mother. Named Emeline, maiden name unknown, born in Kentucky about 1845. She appears on record in the 1870 census, and on every census up to 1920 - after that she disappears. My g-g-father, Francis Marion Davis, was in an Indiana cavalry unit but he was marked "deserted" in 1864 while he was at Louisville. That fact, the timing of my g-father's birth, and the fact that g-g-mother always claimed KY as her birthplace indicates she came from the "Kentuckiana" area. If this strikes a chord in someone's memory I certainly appreciate hearing about it. ------ End of Forwarded Message

    2. I have two brick walls. One is with my GGG Grandfather, Arthur Hall, I cannot document his parents. However, I believe that his father was named John. Arthur moved to Kentucky prior to 1792. (Showed on Nelson County tax list 11/30/1792.) He came to Kentucky from Maryland. He was born in 1725 in Maryland, died in 1813 in Nelson County, Kentucky. He enlisted 8/31/1776 in the Continental Service (Maryland Index Revolutionary War) Passed by Joseph Wilkerson. He married Rebecca Abel and they had the following children: John Born bef 1780 Philip Born between 1780 and 1790 Catherine Baptized 7/22/1781 at St. Andrews Episcopal Parish, MD, Caleb, Sr Born 1760 Margaret Born 1785 Shelton Born between 1794 and 1800 Isaac Born between 1794 and 1800 The second brick wall concerns my G. Grandmothers family. Her mothers maiden name was Elvira Hahn (believed to be born in 1822). She married Squire Wadkins May 11, 1843, in Nelson County, Kentucky. They had four children: Pleasant Born 1845 Missouri (my G Grandmother) Born 1851 Isabel Born 1854 George Washington Born 1857 I cannot document Elvira or Squires parents. Any help in breaking down these brick walls will be appreciated.

    3. One of my long-distance brick walls has been Paul Hoye and his wife Hannah Hamden Hoye. They were born in Maryland (around 1790) married in DC in Jan 1816, but moved to a farm in Floyd Co (New Albany township) between 1816 and 1820. Paul Hoye died between 1824 and 1830, but Hannah lived on the farm with her 4 children (2 boys and 2 girls in the 1830 census) until after 1840. She was living alone in Jeffersonville, Clark Co, IN in 1850 (per the census) and died before 1860 (as near as I can tell). My question concerns the names of her 4 children. I think the elder daughter was Agnes and younger son was Paul, but I don't know the name of the elder son or the younger daughter. I believe that the elder son is my gr gr gr grandfather. 1. Chamberlin - Clark Co., IN
    2. Stumbling Block - Brick wall - Most Wanted - Major Mystery - any and all terms fit. Looking for information regarding a Mary CHAMBERLIN b about 1857 in Clark Co. and died 1941 in Louisville, KY. Mary's parents were John CHAMBERLIN and Elizabeth SMITH. If what I have been able to piece together is correct she may have been married to Oswald KELMEL. Oswald is the son of John KELMEL and Amelia NOLD, my 2Ggrandparents, who came to Carr Twp, Clark Co., IN about 1857. Oswald was born in Oetigheim, Baden, Germany in 1848 and possibly died in 1884 as a result of drowning in the Ohio River. There is a death notice in a newspaper in Indiana stating that an URWALT KELMER died in a drowning accident along with his father-in-law John CHAMBERLIN. Presumably Mary and Oswald married about 1881-82, place unknown. I have been unable to find Oswald in the 1880 census. In the 1900 census in Franklin Twp, Floyd Co., IN there is an Amelia KELMEL (1883-1974) living with Alexander STRONG and his wife Mary and 3 more children. In 1910 Alexander and Mary are in Louisville, KY and Amelia is also in Jefferson Co., KY married to George MILLER (1882-1944). George and Amelia are buried in Floyd Co., IN in the Antioch Church cemetery. Mary, Alexander and Amelia died in Louisville, KY and found their death information on KY GenWeb. A cousin in Clark Co. also found the obituaries for Mary and Alexander. Unknowns: 1) marriage date and place for Mary and Oswald/Urwalt; 2) marriage date and place for Mary and Alexander; 3) marriage date and place for Amelia Kelmel and George Miller; 4) is this my missing Oswald Kelmel. I may be way off base, and wouldn't be the first time, but what makes me feel like it's possible is the daughter's name - Amelia, which is the same as Oswald's mot her. The Kelmel's attended St. Joseph on the Hill Catholic Church and there is no record of marriage or death for Oswald there and no birth record for Amelia, as there are for the others. Thank you for reading my mystery. I live in Missouri and need to make a visit to Louisville to check their records, but may be spring before that is accomplished. 1. Brickwall: GGF William Couch, Perry County, KY
    2. The below William Couch is my GGF. For the last ten years I have been looking for his parents. My suspicions are that they were William Couch born about 1815 in KY and Dougherty Hall born about 1815. But, I have not been able to prove that. They did have a son named William born about 1852-1854 which would be about the same time as my William, but that doesn't prove anything. He seems likely because I have eliminated most of the other William Couch's in that area for various reasons, age, marriages, other parents, etc. But, I need proof positive or negative. I have William Couch and his wife (Mary Jane "Polly" McIntosh)'s children and their decendents and the McIntosh line, but have never been able to know for sure who William's parents were. I would love to know which of the Couch lines William decends from. The 1880 Perry County census is the only census that I have been able to find them together on. Then, in 1884 Mary Jane McIntosh remarries to John Huston Smith and they have five children and continued to live in Perry County, until at least the 1940's. Are there any decendents of this Smith family out there who might can answer my question about Mary's first husband? I would love to hear from you. John Huston Smith born 4/16/1860 Buckhorn,Perry County. He was the son of Huston Smith and Nancy Allen. And the grandson of Jeremiah Smith b. 1794 and Elizabeth "Betsy" Jones. Which are also related to me through my Smith lines. (Jeremiah Smith was my GGG Grandfather on the Smith side of my family). I have no idea what happened to William Couch. William and Mary had one more child - Arkansas Couch after the 1880 census. Arkansas was born in December 1882, in Perry County. Two years later Mary is remarried, so what happened to William Couch? Did he die, they divorce, go to jail, run off, what? If you know who William's parents were, or what happened to him after the 1880 census, I would love to know. Thank you. 1. Ivan is still reading the booklet about Ky. Books.
    2. Kentucky Book Fair 2004 What was it like for early pioneers to migrate to the Ohio Valley? RUNNING MAD FOR KENTUCKY; FRONTIER TRAVEL ACCOUNTS, edited by Ellen Eslinger, features more than a dozen firsthand accounts of travelers as they crossed the Appalachian Mountains in the 18th century. While many published travel diaries focused on the Overland Trail to California, Eslinger highlights an often overlooked part of Kentucky and frontier history. Surviving trans-Appalachian accounts are rare, and those in this volume describe the journey over Daniel Boone's Wilderness Road and down the Ohio River toward the "New Eden" of Kentucky. Settlers often found the route west fraught with danger, and they describe the challenges and hardships faced during their travels. Eslinger is a professor of history at DePaul University in Chicago. Shared by Ivan D. Lancaster of TRAFALGAR Member of The Board of Directors of The Boone Society and a member of The Daniel Boone and Frontier Families Association.

    2. Wed. October 27, 2004 Dear Cousins and Friends of Kentucky, Received a booklet a day or two ago and just looked through it last evening. The 23nd Annual Kentucky Book Fair booklet. The event is in Frankfort, Ky. Sat , Nov. 13, 2004 http://www.kybookfair.org/ Not sure how I got on the mailing list. Perhaps through membership in The Filson Club. The following caught my eye. "Maurice Manning's A COMPANION FOR OWLS, written in the voice of Daniel Boone, captures all the beauty and struggle in the birth of America." p. 3 Maurice Manning Daniel Boone began his first trip to Kentucky in May of 1769 and helped establish the earliest settlements in what became the first state in America's early history never to have been under British colonial authority. Written in the voice of frontiersman Boone, Manning's A COMPANION FOR OWLS captures all the beauty and struggle of nascent America and the birth of a new nation. Manning follows Boone;s progression in war and in the wilderness - as he meets the Cherokee, the Shawnee and the Delaware peoples, witnesses bountiful animals and great, undisturbed rivers. With a complete view of the man and not the legend, the reader stands aside Boone as he buries his brother, then his wife, and finds comfort in his friendship with a slave named Derry. A COMPANION FOR OWLS brings to life one man's incredible journey and one nation's incredible beginnings. Manning was born in Lexington and grew up in Danville. He earned a BA from Earlham College: an MA in English from the University of Kentucky; and an MFA in poetry from the University of Alabama. He Teaches English at Indiana University. His poems have appeared in The Southern Review: the Virginia Quarterly Review and The New Yorker. ################# Maurice Manning Maurice Manning April 19, 2001 -- As part of our continuing poetry series throughout the month of April, 35-year-old poet Maurice Manning shares his work. Manning is a first-year professor at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. He was born and raised in Kentucky and he has always stayed close to his home. His poetry reflects his feelings about the land the culture that surrounds him. Last year Manning was selected for the Yale Younger Poets Series -- the longest-running poetry prize in America. Yale University Press is currently publishing Manning's first book, Lawrence Booth's Book of Visions and it should come out this spring. His poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Shenandoah, The Southern Review, Washington Square, Green Mountains Review, Hayden's Ferry Review, The Spoon River Poetry Review, Wind, Hunger Mountains, Black Warrior Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, and elsewhere. LAWRENCE BOOTH'S BOOK OF VISIONS includes 58 poems featuring Lawrence Booth, a fictional character described by Publishers Weekly as "equal parts carnivorous nightmare, Freudian pastoral, and deep-fired family romance." Presenting a cast of allegorical and symbolic, yet very real, characters, Manning's poems have "authority, daring, and a language of color and sure movement," wrote Yale Series of Younger Poets Award judge W. S. Merwin. A COMPANION FOR OWLS is a collection of highly original narrative poems written in the voice of frontiersman Daniel Boone, a work that captures all the beauty and struggle of nascent America. Manning begins full-time teaching in the Indiana University M.F.A. Program in Fall 2004. ################## Also mentioned in the Booklet about the Book Fair WESTWARD INTO KENTUCKY; THE NARRATIVE OF DANIEL TRABUE with a new forward by Smith. Daniel Trabue (1760-1840) was one of these dreamers. A Virginian, Trabue crossed the Appalachians with his family in 1785 to settle in Kentucky's upper Green River Valley. He founded the town of Columbia, where in 1827 he wrote his memories of Kentucky as frontier, first release of this manuscript in 1981. The book will be re-released this year. ############## The Manning book sounds great. I have already ordered the Manning book from http://www.amazon.com/ Have any of you heard of this book? (Ken may be able to tell us if there is a connection with the Boones. At any rate, it should fit in with materials of The Daniel Boone and Frontier Families Association.)
