Hello Kathryn and List, Thanks Kathryn for bringing this out but the renaming of towns had started from the first settlements in the new world. In the case of my Harris ancestors they settled around Bloomfield, Davis Co., IA., during the late 1840's, just northeast of Bloomfield you will see the town of Fairfield, inside Jefferson Co., IA. They were descendants of early settlers of Jefferson, Nelson, Hardin and Grayson County's of Kentucky. If you find on a map, Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY and just northeast a few miles you will see the towns of Fairfield and Bloomfield. I have researched the history of Davis Co., IA., and have seen it written, by historians, that they were unsure where the name Bloomfield came from! I believe it was the pioneer Kentuckians that reused these home town names. You will also find these names in New Jersey! That's where many of them started their migration from in the late 1700's. Good luck on your research, Mike Lamb >From: KaUzGr@aol.com >To: HARRIS-HUNTERS-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [HH] Migration Patterns >Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2005 23:04:34 EDT > >After the Civil War, settlers in Alabama, Mississippi, and other Southern >states moved even further--to Texas. Go to http://www.census-online.com/ Click on Links to Online Census Records which will take you to http://www.census-online.com/links/ (Or skip the first link and go there directly!) Select a state that might have a census, and click on the green name of the state. I chose Indiana for this example. Clicking on Indiana took me to: http://www.census-online.com/links/IN/ Now you have the option of either clicking on the county on the map, or of clicking on one of the links to the left. I chose Jennings county for this example and got sent to the following page: http://www.census-online.com/links/IN/Jennings/ Where I have a choice of four possible places to go. Notice that two of those links are for the 1820 census. Some of the links will take you to pay sites, which is why the information about the source site is provided (so you can ignore them, if you wish). 1820 Federal Census Located at USGenWeb Census Project ® [Report Broken Link] 1820 Federal Census <FONT COLOR="#000000" BACK="#ffffff" style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" SIZE=2 PTSIZE=10 FAMILY="SANHeads of Households Located at Jennings County, Indiana [Report Broken Link] 1850 Federal Census Located at USGenWeb Census Project ® [Report Broken Link] 1930 Federal Census Located at Jennings Co. INGenWeb [Report Broken Link] Clicking on the first link takes me to the 1820 Jennings county Indiana census website at USgenweb: http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/in/jennings/1820/ And shows me three options on a page that looks like this: Index of /pub/usgenweb/census/in/jennings/1820 Name Last modified Size Description Parent Directory 25-Mar-2004 22:44 - index.txt 25-Mar-2004 22:23 11k pg0076.txt 25-Mar-2004 22:17 64k Apache/1.3.26 Server at www.us-census.org Port 80 The index page is just that, and index of the information in that file. The pg0076 link will take me directly to the census information. Sometimes the parent directories are helpful, and sometimes they are just a waste of time. The parent directory in this case takes me to the next level up, and offers me that chance to go straight to the 1850 census at the same source. There will be broken links, as people drop their accounts or move the accounts to other servers. When you find one, please click on the "report a broken link" button, and the webmaster will investigate, and remove the link or redirect the link if they can locate the new URL. If you consistently get the message "page cannot be displayed", it may be related to your computer settings. I am afraid that I am not qualified to tell you how to reset those, but there are plenty of folks out there who surely can. I see that you have an yahoo address... Try the help pages for how to search the internet using yahoo on your main page to see what they suggest. Hope that helps! Sherri
Roslyn, He is there, listed as James Stuckey of Brookville on page 170 My source was: http://www.rootsweb.com/~infrankl/1820index.html?o_xid=0022846292&o_lid=0022846292 I use census-online quite often, they seem to have most of the census reocrds that are available online there in that one spot. I am copying this to the list as well so everyone can see the URL for the census. We will be traveling through Kentucky next month and I get to dally long enough to do THREE days of research there! Since I've never been to Kentucky (we live on the west coast), I am very excited about this. My research interests are for the surname McKenney (by all of its spellings!) - a family that settled in and near Jefferson, Shelby, Gallatin, Carroll counties. I have found records of them (microfilmed) in those counties from the 1790s through to the 1840s. I am especially interested in John McKenney who settled on Eagle Creek in what was Gallatin and became Carroll County. He evidently died about 1839 after he was recorded in a legal document but not enumerated in the 1840 census. My question is: how can I best use my valuable time while I am there? Does Carroll County have a genealogy library? Since I have already looked at microfilmed records (census, tax records, deeds, etc), what else might I find of value when researching on-site? Any and all advise would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. Jody McKenney Thomson

George Goss was said to have been the first person killed by an automobile in Jeffersonville, IN. Does anyone know when cars were first introduced to the area. George is in an unmarked grave beside his brother, Edward A. Goss and his wife in the Eastern Cemetery. I would like to find George's date of death. Does anyone know if the cemetery has any files or 3 x 5 cards of the interred. Thank you to anyone that can help! Penny SnOOOpy839@aol.com
In Jeffersonville, Clark County, at the corner of Court Ave & Walnut St. was a bakery known as Kralls. The building still stands and I understand that the building is still a bakery and the Kralls neon sign is still on the building. Is this correct? W
Hello, I hope I am sending this to the right person, if not I'm sorry for bothering you! After reading your post that mentioned George Detchen's parents and grandparents. You mentioned that "Sarah Browning) was born in Chicago, Ill., married George Detchen and spent her life in Louisville, Ky." In the 1880 Census the Detchen name was mispelled Ditchen. The grandparents were from Germany and Henry b. OH. Henry DETCHEN married Anna GOSS ca 1860s, don't know where! They lived in Louisville, KY on West 16th St. Henry owned a retail grocery store. They had four or five children, four boys for sure: William, Henry, Louie, and Charles found in the 1880 Census of Louisville, Jefferson Co. KY. Is there any chance these two men are out of the same family? Penny Hobson SnOOOpy839@aol.com

In 1863 a 13 year old boy named John H Phillips joined a MI civil war unit that was camped near Louisville. He probably lived in or around the Louisville area at the time. I am trying to locate the family of this young man. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks - Lee
With permission of the list owner, I am posting this announcement. I write a genealogy column for the New Albany Tribune that uses free queries. If you have family that has ties with the following southern Indiana counties and would like to send ONE query to be published - SEND DIRECTLY TO ME (not the list) at bzuveri@bellsouth.net Queries will be used on a first come basis as space permits. Your NAME AND POSTAL ADDRESS MUST BE INCLUDED as not all my readers have e-mail. This is a good way to make contact with those researching your family lines who are not online. I will publish your e-mail address also. Please INCLUDE YOUR E-MAIL IN THE BODY OF YOUR QUERY MESSAGE. Please read the rules below: Queries are free and must have a date to establish a time period and a connection to Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Orange, Perry, Scott or Washington Counties in Indiana. Send ONE query per e-mail to Vicky Zuverink at bzuveri@bellsouth.net Other queries in a separate e-mail may be sent but will be used as space permits.
I got this from another List I'm on, but it looks pretty good. You can look at population of the counties, or the cities in the counites for differnet years, and gives other good information. they have a place to veiw the counties, but they don't have any pictures for the counites I' interested in, but if you have some you can send them to the site. you need to click on the link that says cities, and counties to get the inforamtion , there are a lot of links that you maybe able to use also. http://www.searchsystems.net/ -- Teddy List Mom for the Grayson Co Ky List, Brady, Vertrees, Ford, Fulkerson, and Commonwealth http://www.kygenweb.net/pd-res/deford.html
