Seeking information on the following families in Jefferson Co., Ky. George MESSENGER (MESSINGER) b. abt. 1865 m. Minnie ? They appear on the 1900 census with daughters Elsie, Sadie, Annie, & Daisy. One record found at the Allen Co. library in Indiana (which yours truly failed to document) indicated that George died abt. 1900. He was a Louisville fireman according to the census. Census also indicates that both George and Minnie were born in Kentucky. Elsie was my great grandmother. Her full name was Elsie Elnora MESSENGER and she married William Edward BARTON, b. abt. 1888. I do not know what became of her sisters but suspect there might be some rather close cousins locally that I know nothing about and who knows nothing about me. Hopefully one of them is researching *their* great grandmother's line. Sadie was the oldest, b. abt. 1890. Annie, abt. 1892, then Elsie in abt. 1894 followed by Daisy in 1895. Elsie and William's children were: Ann BARTON, Bill BARTON, Charles BARTON, Deloris BARTON, Elsie BARTON, Mary BARTON, Minnie BARTON, Stanley BARTON, Sterling BARTON, and Thomas Edward "Tommy" BARTON. Tommy was my grandfather and my mother was his only child. He and my grandmother divorced when my mother was a toddler and he never remarried. Although there was no hostility between the families, we still are not real familiar with the BARTON side of the family. If there are any BARTON cousins out there, we would like to remedy that situation. William Edward BARTON's father was William Logan BARTON. Any help greatly appreciated, especially being able to link up with one of my mother's first cousins! -Debbie Leu
I am sorry to post this on our network, but it is of vital importance to Veterans.
Hi everyone! Just a quick not to let you all know about the new gedcom I just posted. It is a very large one donated to us by Mena Mead. Please go to Kentuckiana Genealogy and take a look! (Look under Gedcom Databases) http://www.aye.net/~dee1234/ Also....I have decided to accept larger gedcoms.....Mena's was over 3000 people and I was able to keep the gedcom output to well under 1MB. So send me your gedcoms!! ;-) I am working as fast as possible at posting all the information that was recently donated. If you don't see your donation posted....don't worry! I have received alot of information in the past week and I'll get to it very soon! I'm not overwhelmed, though....so don't be shy about sending your records!!! ;-) One more thing....(long winded this morning, aren't I?) I'm working on the Genealogy of the Leavenworth Family. I have posted the Preface, part of the index and Introduction. I'm working on this only a bit at a time. Because of the age of the book the ocr software I have isn't wanting to read it correctly so I have to fix alot of errors as I go. But I am working on it and have been able to upload a new page every evening! :-) Thanks all!! Dee Listowner for KENTUCKIANA-L Kentuckiana Genealogy http://www.aye.net/~dee1234/
Hi, I take the digest so I don't get the messages right away and then have to lift them out of the digest when I get them. I am answering to the list because this is not a "heavy list" Do you realize that there are two, three or maybe more Keller lines in Harrison county? I do come out of one of them from the Shenandoah and know a couple of people who come from the other ones. If you can go to my FTW Web and look under the Schnepp or Snapp report you will see one of the lines. I also have the one that goes back to the Keller/Windle marriage. You can find that if you look at my InterneTree. If you can't see that then I will send you some of my database. I do collect some Keller because my husband has some PA Keller and some of the other Kellers interact with my other lines. >______________________________X-Message: #3 >Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 21:23:31 -0600 >From: "kateb@xelnet" <kateb@xelnet.com> >To: <KENTUCKIANA-L@rootsweb.com> >Message-ID: <B0000541449@ns1.xel.net> >Subject: [KENTUCKIANA-L] KELLER surname >Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > >Are there anyone researching KELLER in Clark,Harrison or Floyd County, >Indiana in 1800-1850. ELIZABETH DUNWOODIE, a widow, married ZEELY WILLIAMS SR. of Bullitt Co, KY in 1822 in Shelby Co. She was the widow of John and reportedly had at least three of his children. The Dunwoodies also seem to have some association with IRELANDS and NEWTONS in the area. I am looking for father and siblings of Zeely, Sr. and information on John Dunwoodie, partiicularly the maiden name of hs wife, Elizabeth. I have considerble information on Zeely's children. Any clues as to where the Williams and Dunwoodies came from would be appreciated. Harry Dell

Allan, I am forwarding your comments and mine along to all my lists. Yes, the service is provided by OMS Services in England, a contractor, they have done all the digitizing of the records and programming to make it available online. GRO is not directly envolved. My communication with OMS is as follows: > What are the costs? By the hour or item? If by other than the hour not many will participate. Cost to obtain family rather than ndividual > data would prohibit an itemized cost. As far as myself is concerned, I have looked forward for such an index online. But if not cost effective I will not be able to afford it. > > Thanks, > > Bill Caddell > Granbury, TX USA --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OMS Services wrote: Hi Bill, For access to the index database there is a charge of 6 pounds (approx, USD 10), which allows you to retrieve and display between 30 and 450 names, depending on how many 'hits' you get on a particular name. The basis is actually number of 'pages' of names you get returned in an enquiry, where each 'page' can contain up to 15 names (this is very similar to the way retrieved data is displayed currently at New Register House, Edinburgh, with the GRO(S)' existing system. We tell you how many 'hits' you have got before these are displayed, so you have the opportunity to refine the search - and reduce the number of hits - before display. The charge applies just to the displayed names. When you have used up the 6 pounds, you can accept a further 6 pound payment on you credit card. If you wish to order an extract (eg birth or marriage certificate) for one of the name you have retrieved, there is a charge of 10 pounds (approx. USD 16); the order info. is passed electronically to GRO(S) who send the extract to you by mail. After you have paid the 6 pound fee, you have up to 24 hours to 'spend' it, however many times you log on and off. We thought long and hard about how to charge for access to the database. We ruled out charging by the hour for access to the databse, because this would have allowed 'bulk downloading' of information from the database, and this data could then have been re-sold. For example, someone might decide to download all the entries for a common surname (eg MacDonald or Smith), amounting to many thousands entries. We were concerned to have a system of charging which would be fair for individuals doing research on their own family. We think we have got it right, but we will shall be interested on how the charging scheme will be accepted in practice, after the service has been running for a while. Thankyou for your interest. Gray write: I am sure we were all excited to learn that the General Register Office planned to put its indices for deaths, births and marriages online early this year. And when it was recently announced that these would be available April 6th. some of us have been virtually straining at the leash. But even more recently we have been informed, see http://www.open.gov.uk/gros/groshome.htm, that there will be a charge for this service. We knew and expected that there would be a charge for any copies of documents ordered from the GRO but the planned charge for mere index access of six pounds was not previously mentioned (the GRO does not tell us how or how often such a charge will be assessed). The GRO will surely realize a huge increase in document orders and corresponding income as a result of the index availability online - surely enough over time to compensate the office for the institution of this service without charging for an index search alone. Moreover, there is the more general question of great importance to family history researchers, of whether or not the public should have to pay for access to public records. The GRO is the custodian of these documents, not the owner. For the first time the internet provides a voice for users to try and influence bureaucratic decisions. The GRO already has my letter. Mr. Payne, I just today discovered one of my Robinsons living in a Payne household on the 1850 Hardin County census. This is much later than the James and Elizabeth you're looking for, so I looked up the Paynes in a book I have at home on Hardin County. There is a long section on Colonel James B. Payne, b. 1834 in Fayette Co., came to Hardin Co. in the late 1840's, and on his family; also a section on the Colonel James B. Payne mansion in Elizabethtown; then a section on Professor John N. Payne, b. 1832 in Mercer County, principal of the Elizabethtown public school in Hardin County, but whose father Robert came from Virginia to Lexington, KY when he was a boy. Let me know if this is of much interest to you. Linda K.
I visited the Louisville library today to finish copying my Robinsons from the 1850 Hardin County census, and found Durbins as well. Here you go, hope this helps: Dwelling 174: Hannah Durbin, age 64, female, born in KY, can read & write Nancy Durbin, age 40, female, born in KY, can read & write John Durbin, age 31, male, born in KY, can read & write Dwelling 33: (Appears to be Williams household, but there's a Durbin in it): Nathaniel Durbin, age 21, male, born in New York Dwelling 95: John C. Hope this helps. Didn't have time to check on Brownings, but if I get the chance I will. Linda K.

My own research has been concentrated in the Meade County area, and my database includes all the names listed above with the exception of PECKINPAUGH and CRAWFORD (I actually have CRAWFORD, but not from the early Kentuckiana area). Of course, my PAYNE ancestors, the earliest being James PAYNE who m. Elizabeth _________, present in Hardin (pre-Meade) Co., KY by about 1807 (on tax lists there), were found in Meade County. I recently formed a SHACKLETT-L surname mailing list, which is still rather small (18 of us presently). Please join us if you are a SHACKLETT researcher! Almost all SHACKLETTs in America are related by virtue of their common immigrant ancestor, Benjamin SHACKLETT (1710 in France - 1784 in PA) who m. Sarah BLANCETTE in 1733. His father was John SHACKLET/SHACKALIT/SHAKERLY (1678 in France - 1717/18 in Charles Co., MD) who m. Mary _____. John's surname evolved from his French name, thought by many researchers over the years to be Jenade JACQUELOT. Some of us, including yours truly, now believe his name to have been Jean De JACQUELOT, this having resulted from recent contacts with members of the JACQUELOT family in France, two of whom are subscribers to SHACKLETT-L. The SHACKLETTs, those descending from John (son of Benjamin mentioned above) & his wife Barbara QUICK, were prolific pioneers in Hardin/Meade Co., KY. If anyone can help with James & Elizabeth PAYNE mentioned above, please contact me! One possibility, which I will mention here is that they COULD be the James PAYNE and Elizabeth HUDSON who m. 15 Jun 1785 in Dorchester Co., MD. Why? Because a great-granddaughter was named Blanche Hudson PAYNE, with no known reason for the middle name, by parents who followed a pattern of naming their children after ancestors. Also, there was a John HUDSON found in the 1810 census of Hardin Co., KY close (adjacent, I believe) to the family of James PAYNE. James & Elizabeth were known to have had the following children: Lewis, Thomas, Richard (my ancestor), Elizabeth and Sabrina (Sarah). On 13 Jul 1818, James PAYN (sic) was named as one of the account holders in the settlement of the estate of William WITHERS. James' son Lewis PAYNE m. (I) Summerville WITHERS, dau. of Elizabeth WITHERS, on 1 Feb 1819 in Meade Co. I have wondered if Elizabeth was perhaps the wife of William, but have no proof of same. I should mention that I also manage the PAYNE-L mailing list, a comparatively large list with 390 subscribers at present. PAYNE researchers are always welcomed. BJGFL, I would like to exchange information with you. I know many AOLers and some others, too, make a practice of using just their screen name, but may I encourage all to share their real name when corresponding on genealogy lists? :)) It's always nice to know the name of the person to whom we are writing!
