    3. Dee: Thank you for hosting this site. I know many of us appreciate all your hard work. I am trying (unsuccessfully) to locate a Runnels (or Renyolds) LITTLE married to Sarah PRATHER. Their two sons (born early 1820's) were George and Archibald LITTLE, who moved from Hardin Co., to Perry Co. According to History of Warrick, Spencer, and Perry Co.s Runnels was born in Germany and Sarah in Maryland. My problem is I can not prove that Archibald was a son, only George. If anyone has any info I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Karen in CA

    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] *this* Kentuckiana
    2. Dee
    3. At this time I feel it necessary to provide everyone on the list with a few notes on *this* Kentuckiana area: I have one family (Borden) who were found in both Harrison and Clark in the same year. I have another (Lyon) who had children in all of the following counties: Crawford, Harrison, Floyd, Clark, Meade, Hardin, Washington. I had another family (Brown) who had children in all of the following counties: Clark, Crawford, Dubois, Floyd, Harrison, Orange, Lawrence, Perry, Scott and Washington. I know of another family (Smith, unfortunately not the direct line I'm looking for) who were in every county covered by Kentuckiana, including the two new additions. I know of countless others who were found one year in one county and the next year in the next county over...sometimes they had moved...alot of times they hadn't. This area experienced alot of change (as I know other areas did)...but most of the time the families remained in *this* general area. Sometimes they came through Cincy, sometimes they were just passing through before settling in Evansville....most of the time they, or a "branch" of their family, settled in *this* Kentuckiana area. I'm not going to *ever* include the Evansville area or the far east Indiana-Kentucky border. I will never extend my self that far, because that is not why this site, or this mailing list were started. Families in this area are sometimes very difficult to trace simply because they moved a county or two over (sometimes they hadn't moved, the county line did).....*that* is why I made this site and this mailing list. If I must begin to include other areas that families came from, or moved to....then I better get busy on my Ohio research (Borden family came through Highland Co., OH), also, Virginia, oh my...I'm going to be very busy....not to mention Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota....but wait! Doesn't the USGenWeb cover all of these areas? And if there is an area in any of those states that's s imilar to *this* Kentuckiana...couldn't someone else start a site and mailing list just as easily as I did.... of course! And I'm not driving to Virginia any time soon to obtain records! If I receive any more flames (off the list is all I have received so far...but that's beside the point) I will remove the ones flaming from the list and request that they do not visit us again. I won't mention names..but I'm tired of people telling me that I'm "stupid" for not including the entire southern half of Indiana. Or someone saying that I might as well "close-up shop" if I don't add more counties in the southern part of Indiana. (the previous two people have been removed....no warning, their remarks were totally uncalled for) I am always looking for ways to improve the site....and alot of you know I accept constructive criticism very well, and many times I have taken the suggestions of others and changed my site (most recently, the addition of Jefferson Co., IN and Bullitt Co., KY).....But when I have to listen to name calling...that's going too far...I don't *have* to hear it. Sorry this has been so long everyone...and thanks to all of you who responded to my most recent e-mail. There is no need for anyone to respond to this e-mail...I've said my piece... let's get back to *this* Kentuckiana research! :-) (All this over a name! LOL) Thanks, Dee Listowner for KENTUCKIANA-L Kentuckiana Genealogy http://www.aye.net/~dee1234/

    2. Gene Milburn
    3. Does anyone have information as to whether or not there is a Kentucky or Indiana Pioneers or First Families project or listing anywhere. I know Tennessee and Kansas have or have had active programs to catalogue and "public" listings in their historical societies of pioneers who settled (owned land) in their respective areas for some time. They also offer Certificates to those researchers who qualify. If there is not a program in place............ Dee? What do you think? This is a great way for researchers to display the results of their labors and be "recognized". Any leads, websites, etc would be helpful. Thanks, Gene Milburn

    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] Re: Jefferson Co., IN
    2. Dee
    3. Bill and everyone, The reason I don't add the entire Kentucky and Indiana Border counties is because the people who settled or moved through *this* area didn't go into the areas south (near Evansville) or North (near Cincy). (some, maybe, but not many). Another reason is because....it's my site. This mailing list is a spin-off of a web site for *this* Kentuckiana area....not Evansville, not Cincy, not even Carroll Co., KY...I will add counties as my visitors *request* this...and as I feel there is a genuine need to. The area Kentuckiana Genealogy covers is an area that was very connected. People moved back and forth from one county to another, sometimes without actually moving. In no way am I deceiving anyone. If you have been to the Kentuckiana Genealogy website, you will have noticed that right at the top of the main page I list all counties covered by this site, and this mailing list. You're the first to mention Carrol Co., KY..... If you don't like the counties covered...or feel that others should be added...my suggestion is that you *request* that a specific county be covered. When I feel the need is there, it will probably be added. The name I have given my site, I feel, is a very good name....I don't think: Breckinridge, Clark, Crawford, Dubois, Floyd, Hardin, Harrison, Jefferson, Jefferson, Orange, Meade, Perry, Scott and Washington in Indiana and Kentucky or South-Central Indiana-North Central Kentucky (small section in the center) Would be very wise choices..... ;-) Thanks you for your input...but Kentuckiana is staying the way it is for now! :-) My suggestion to you is to check out the Kentuckiana Genealogy site. Then you would get a better understanding of what we're all about and why we only cover the counties we do. 3. Read the account of Floyd's Defeat with interest. My genealogies on my Ryker/Demarest/Hoagland(Hougland) ancestors say that Henry Hougland and Gerardus Ryker were both killed during the Battle of Floyd's Defeat in 1792. Have never been able to find their names listed and wonder if this is the same or perhaps I am confused. The recent account mentions 1781. Any help would be appreciated. Am interested in trying to trace Henry Hougland. Ruth Filip

    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] Best's in Floyd,Clark and Martin Co.IN?
    2. Nwayman
    3. My ggggrandfather is James Best, b. 1811 in Clark Co., IN(Jeffersonville). He was born to a Sarah Best/Bess, age 27....on a birth record book I found, somewhere in a library. Don't remember where? I wasn't documenting when I started researching. I have Sarah Best/Bess in an 1820 Fed.census, that she settled there at that time... she is on the census with a Edward Best, from KY, and a Samuel from England. I figured Edward was born in 1780-90, says he was settled in Clark County by 1814, Samuel was born it says in 1700, and that's impossible, cause if he was born in 1700, and this was an 1820 census, he would have been about 120yrs old; he said he settled in Dearborn Co., in 1819. So I did some figuring from this being a 1820 census, that he was probably was actually born in 1776, from England which would make him 24yrs old. Although, his age does follow thru on Samuel Best all thru the censuses. James then married Catherine Shannon(dau. of Samuel & Mary Ann Gilliland). They had Their children were Sarah Jane, Sarah Jane,Mary Ann, Martha, Ellen, Caroline, John, James. These names were given on Samuel Shannon's probate, as his daughter Catherine's children. In an 1850 census, James, age 38 is living with a Sarah Best, age 39 (figured she was b. 1811, also. The children listed were L.J. age 17, Anne15, M.E. 10, C.E. 8, James 7, and John 3. So I figured these were the same children, if you break them down. As: L.J. (unknown), Anne(Mary Anne), M.E. is (Martha E.), C.E. is Catherine E., James is James, and John is John. But Ellen and Sarah Jane are missing! Where are they? I figured out that L.J. age 17, born in 1833; Mary Ann age 15, b. 1835; Martha E. age 10 b. 1840; Catherine age 8 b. 1842, James age 7 b. 1843(that figures out right with my gggrandfather), and John age 3, b. 1847. But L. J. age 17 is missing in the probate of Samuel Shannon....... Getting to the point here, on this 1850 census, it lists his children, except two, and they are Ellen and Sarah Jane. On this 1850 census all these children are listed with initials. Mary Ann is shown married in 1853 to a Henry E. Coppen, and Sarah is married to an unknown Wood, unknown marriage date, also. Now unless I have the wrong 3rd marriage, James1 also married a Rebecca Landrom in Martin Co, IN around 1860. In this 1860 census it lists, Rebecca Best age 34, Eng.; Caroline, age 17, John 15, and Minnie age 1mo. In a another 1860 Indiana Census, James is listed at age 48, from OH, and Rebecca is age 34, from England..... Then in another 1860 Census they are listed again, and this time there is an Anna(Rodman) age 7 Female , then it says Del behind her name. This is the way it looks, James Best, age 48 Male, Ships Carpenter, from OH; Rebecca age 32/34 Female, from England; Caroline age 17, Female, from IN; John age 15, Male, from IN, Anna (Rodman)Female, from Del, and Minnie 1yr, then Martha is listed as age 15, from IN on a separate page, altogether away from her family.......why? Then in an 1870 Jackson Co.IN census, James is 59, b. 1811 OH; Rebecca is 43 b. 1827 Eng; Morton M. is 3, born IN; Pleasant B. is 11months, and Myro S. is 11 months(twins) both Females, born in IN. My question is, my ggggrandfather always said he had brothers by the name of Mort and Patrick. He never said much about Mort, but he said this Patrick went to Alabama, and he fought a bear, and physically he lost to the bear(bar), cause the bear tore all of his tendons, and ligaments, etc., and was left lame; but he was also able to kill the bear. It's been told there is a monument to this. Anyone familiar with a Pat Best, or this bear story? Anyone familiar with this James Best family?
