Does anyone have any info on a PERDELIA PRATHER, first wife of John James LEACH (Clark Co., Indiana)? The 4/20/1998 Jeffersonville Evening News ran an old (1909) obituary for John James LEACH, "son of Mr. and Mrs. Bowman Leach", born "near Sellersburg on September 8, 1833", who died at age 76 (which would have been approximately 1909). This obituary and another for a Charles B. GILMOUR (1854-1909) were printed in today's newspaper, apparently as filler. The article identifies John James LEACH as being first married to "Miss Perdelia PRATHER who died after a brief married life, leaving one son, Albert LEACH of Indianapolis. A few years later, 51 years prior [circa 1858], Mr. LEACH was married to Mrs. Martha Ann HOPWOOD, who survives him though in poor health for the past few years." Does anyone have any clues on this one? My Clark County PRATHER records show only one Perdelia PRATHER (great-granddaughter of Basil William PRATHER), who died in either 1835 or 1855, born 1835, but she is buried at New Chapel Cemetery, listed with the surname PRATHER, which makes me believe she died as an infant in 1835 or as an unmarried woman of 20 in 1855 or had married into the PRATHER family before her death at age 20. Hi everyone! Just heard about this: If you would like to transcribe an Indiana or Kentucky census but don't have the data check out this site for a FREE book; http://www.skpub.com/genie/ Here is what they said about a free book; SK Publications publishes books of prints of the original census schedules. Many counties in several states are available from 1800-1850 Census Books of prints of the original census schedules. SK Publications has offered to provide a free copy of one of their books containing photocopies of original census pages to those who volunteer to transcribe counties for which they have books. In return, they ask that a notice be put on the uploaded transcription crediting their donation. If you are interested in this offer, please check out their pages and make sure that they have a book for the state and county that you are interested in transcribing. I know that the following books have been requested for transcribing for us: Dubois Co., IN 1850 Hardin Co., KY 1810-1820-1830-1840 If you would be willing to transcribe but don't have access to the records please request a book from this company!! Does anyone have any info on either the GILBERT or POSTILL families of Perry County, IN? In 1918 my grandfather, Ralph Plock, married my grandmother, Nola Gilbert. They had 3 children, Nola dies around 1932 and grandfather Ralph married Josephine Postill in 1934. I don't know for sure whether or not they had any children. I'm trying to find out when Ralph and Josephine died and find out for sure if they had any children of their own. Thanks for anything. Bill Plock Columbus, GA

Hi everyone! I just posted this yesterday to the "Interesting Stories" section and was going to send through the list...but the storms came in too quick and I had to shut down! :-( from History of Lawrence, Orange and Washington Co's. Goodspeed, copyright 1884 At the time of first settlement, and prior to the year 1811, the whites and Indians lived in comparative peace and friendliness as neighbors. But when it became known later that a war was brewing, the Indians left for the North and soon became the allies of Great Britain. Soon after this they began to invade the white settlements in war parties, in paint and feathers, to pillage, burn and murder. This led to the formation of militia companies and and companies of mounted rangers, who were regularly sworn into the service of the United States. As early as March, 1811, Zachariah Lindley, afterward so well known in Orange Co., was made Captain of a militia company in that territory, where he then lived, and James McVey was his first Lieutenant. Numerous companies were formed in Harrison Co., to which Washington was then attached. At that time the entire county composed of the Fifth Militia Regiment, the officers being; John Tipton, Colonel; John Depauw, Major; and the following Captains: Absalom Sargent, James McKinney, John Bell, Zacheriah Lindley, George French, Charles Busey and John Royse. Among the Lieutenants were: Joseph Shields, Elijah Veach, William Cunningham, Jacob Zenor, who was afterward Captain and Major, Jesse Durham, John Carter, John Maris, E.C. Hunter and others. Upon the formation of Washington Co. in 1814, it was given a separate regiment, the Ninth. The order for the formation of this regiment was given January 10, 1814, and John Depauw was commissioned Colonel, and to him a dedimus was issued by the territorial Governor to swear into the service the officers and men of the regiment. The first Captains of the Ninth regiment were: Deney, Huston, French, Sargent, Beck, Dewalt, Busey, Royse, Jerry Rankin and Samuel Maris. Some of them were soon succeeded by: Clifton Glazebrook, William Kennedy, Jesse Roberts, Jesse Durham, Noah Wright, John Maxwell and others. Jesse Roberts and William Hoggatt served early as Majors. The above men were about all the militia officers until after the war.
