    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] James RAY -- KY > Crawford County,, IN
    2. Rita Ray
    3. My gg-grandfather, James RAY, was born in Kentucky in 1799, according to census records. He married Jane NEWKIRK in Crawford County, IN, in 1838. Any information about his parents and/or siblings will be greatly appreciated. I don't have the name of the Kentucky county where he was born. The information related by a great-uncle is as follows: Two RAY boys, more than two hundred years ago, came from Scotland to Charleston, South Carolina, on into North Carolina. One of the boys married and had some sons, one of whom was James Jacob RAY’s great grandfather, called Harv, or Harvey. Harv married, and his family came by water on a raft to Kentucky, sailing part of the way on the Ohio River. Harv built a big raft and put all his family and stock on it and sailed down the Ohio River around 1775. James Jacob’s grandfather, Jim RAY, was born in 1799 in Kentucky on the Cumberland River. Jim RAY enlisted in the Texas and Mexico War of 1836. He bought a fine horse and rode to Sam HOUSTON’s headquarters in Texas. When he got there, the Battle of San Jacinto had already been fought, and the war was over. He went back to Kentucky and into Crawford County, Indiana, where he married Jane NEWKIRK in 1839 or 1840 when he was about forty years old. Rita Ray ritaray@gte.net

    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] Cemeteries -Louisville & Jefferson Co.
    2. Pat Settle
    3. This is in reply to Tim Jones' query. Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville has an alphabetical, computer printout of everyone buried in that cemetery--the largest in Jefferson Co. You can write them at 701 Baxter Ave., Louisville, KY 40204. They are VERY helpful. I have Maxwells buried there, but they don't go back that far. Also, the Louisville Genealogical Society has published listings of burials in Eastern Cemetery, Louisville. You can write them at: L.G.S., P.O. Box 5164, Louisville, 40255. Not sure about the rest of the cemeteries in the county. You might ask when you write to the two above. Patricia Jones Settle

    3. Hi again everyone, I've been asked by a few on the list about posting. They were a little concerned about posting because they have seen some of the "flames" and "flame wars" on other lists. I tried to assure them that they can post to this list without fear because this is a great group of people! There has only been one flame in the year this list has been in existence, and that person was removed promptly, as I promised to everyone who joins, back when I started. If you haven't read this "promise" yet, please go to: http://www.aye.net/~dee1234/kyiana/kyiana/mlist.html scroll down a bit and you'll see my _Fair Warning_....it has, hopefully, stopped many flames before they started. ;-) Just remember to have fun, and if you are flamed, use your delete button and ignore the person. They may be having a bad day and felt they needed to take it out on someone.....believe me they will regret it later when they are flamed. I did find this on the internet, it may be useful to some of you: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- Capitalize words only to highlight an important point or to distinguish a title or heading. Capitalizing whole words that are not titles is generally termed as SHOUTING, and will be considered an insult to the reader *Asterisks* surrounding a word can be used to make a stronger point. Never send chain letters through the Internet. Sending them can cause the loss of your Internet Access. Because of the International nature of the Internet and the fact that most of the world uses the following format for listing dates, i.e. MM DD YY, please be considerate and avoid misinterpretation of dates by listing dates including the spelled out month: Example: 24 JUN 96 or JUN 24 96 Be professional and careful what you say about others. Email is easily forwarded. Under United States law, it is unlawful "to use any telephone facsimile machine, computer, or other device to send an unsolicited advertisement" to any "equipment which has the capacity (A) to transcribe text or images (or both) from an electronic signal received over a regular telephone line onto paper." The law allows individuals to sue the sender of such illegal "junk mail" for $500 per copy. Most states will permit such actions to be filed in Small Claims Court. This activity is termed "spamming" on the Internet Never give your userID or password to another person. System administrators that need to access your account for maintenance or to correct problems will have full privileges to your account. Never assume your email messages are private nor that they can be read by only yourself or the recipient. Never send something that you would mind seeing on the evening news. Be careful when using sarcasm and humor. Without face to face communications your joke may be viewed as criticism. When being humorous, use emoticons to express humor. (tilt your head to the left to see the emoticon smile) :-) = happy face for humor Acronyms can be used to abbreviate when possible, however messages that are filled with acronyms can be confusing and annoying to the reader. Examples: IMHO= in my humble/honest opinion FYI = for your information BTW = by the way Flame = antagonistic criticism Don't use the exotic features of your terminal (bold, italics) in e-mail. These frequently send a string of control characters that wreak havoc on some types of terminals. (Not to mention confuse the recipient) Resist flaming. A "flame" is a virulent and (often) personal attack against the author of a posting. Flames are, unfortunately, common. People who frequently write flames are known as "flamers." A drawn-out episode of flaming is known as a "flame war." Keep your signature file under six lines long. Familiarize yourself with basic NetSpeak: e.g., BTW stands for "By The Way"; FAQ stands for a frequently asked question or a list of frequently asked questions and their answers; IMHO stands for "In My Humble Opinion"; WTG stands for "Way To Go"; a "newbie" is a new user; and ROTFL stands for "Rolling On The Floor Laughing". Have a data base of about 8000 and always looking for more <G> I also notice that some of my Selby and Masters collaterals have roamed to this area from Washington Co., Ky. Would love to discuss these families........ Carol Collins

A son, Harvey Edward Nelson was born 1861 in Cordova, Rock Island Co. IL. I am looking for the parents of George Washington Nelson. I did find a Harvey Nelson who married Susan Redman 18 Jan 1835 in Floyd County,IN, but can not find any thing to confirm that Harvey and Susan are George's parents. George would have been about 13 years old in 1850 and possibly living in Indiana. Do you have any information on these families??  Any suggestions regarding where I should look next?? 3. Hi everyone! Before I get into the updates I would like to ask everyone who has sent me e-mail to please be patient! In the past few days I have received about 300 personal e-mails and it's going to take me a while to work through them. (most are asking general questions about where something is located, or help contacting the libraries, etc.) I do have a suggestion for everyone....if you have a question about the location of something (church, school, etc) send it through the mailing list or go to the Kentuckiana Forum (link is on the main Kentuckiana site). That's why I put the forum there...for us to ask questions, post anything you want and if I, or anyone else can answer, we will. There are over 400 people on this list, we would have a better chance of getting an answer if we ask everyone! :-) Welcome to the new list members (about 20) ok...now for the updates: (which, for the new list members who may not know, can be found at: http://www.aye.net/~dee1234/ ) *************************************************************** A few births, only a few, were added to Meade Co. ******************************************************************** I've added another page to the Dubois Co., IN 1850 Census ********************************************************************* We have a new look-up volunteer with much information on Perry Co. 3. Exciting news! The restoration of McClintick/Sylvester Cemetery is finally underway. A crew of community service probationers were provided by Judge Steven Fleece's Clark County Courts' Community Service Corps. They worked for about 8 hours on Saturday, 5/9/98 and for another 4 hours on Sunday, 5/10/98. What they were able to accomplish was absolutely REMARKABLE. I've posted a ton of pictures on the McClintick/Sylvester Cemetery website at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/5881/mcclintickcem.html Members of the Jeffersonville Jaycees have volunteered to come help us at the cemetery on May 23. Two crews of teenage volunteers from the National Acteens Convention in Louisville will be working at McClintick Cemetery on Friday, July 3. Great things are starting to happen in Clark County!!! 3. For those of you in the area who may have an interest, the 1998 Annual Meeting of the Silver Creek Cemeterial Association will be held this weekend at the "old brick church" on Brick Church Road between Sellersburg and Charlestown. The meeting will begin at 2:30 PM on Sunday afternoon, May 17. There are several fascinating articles relating to the many, many pioneers buried at Silver Creek Cemetery linked on the Clark County USGENWEB page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~inclark/clark.htm BTW, Silver Creek Church was the FIRST Protestant Church established in the state of Indiana, chartered as a Baptist congregation in 1798.
