To: KENTUCKIANA-L@rootsweb.com Lois, thanks for providing information on the John Hay Center in Washington County, IN! To Clara and others interested in doing research at the John Hay Center in Salem, IN, as a member, I can tell you that the center is closed on Sunday and Monday. The hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., EST, not EDT. The last time I was there the charge for using the library to do research was $3.00 per day, unless you are a member. An individual may join the Washington County Historical Society, Inc. for $10.00/year and use the library for free. This is a WONDERFUL source of information, not only for Washington County, but for surrounding counties! Martha Bowers and her staff are helpful and pleasant! Have fun! Mary Jo

There was a MArtin Contz in Ohio Co VA 1776- maybe Adam's brot?????/ More questions than answers right now. cindy Holsapple-Boone
Thanks to everyone who kindly offered suggestions about where to start in Washington County, IN. It looks like the John Hay Center Genealogical Library (or Stevens Museum) is the place to begin. Clara

Clara: Your very first stop in Washington County absolutely MUST be the: John Hay Center Genealogical Library (Stevens Museum) 307 East Market Street Salem, Indiana 47167 812-883-6495 (No fee; donations accepted) I think the library is open Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays, but I suggest you call ahead to confirm the hours. There are signs on the main drag through town pointing the way to the Hay Center. I personally would suggest going there before hitting the courthouse, etc. For others on the KENTUCKIANA list, if you haven't been to the Hay Center and either live here in Southern Indiana or will be visiting here, this is a tremendous resource that you should make plans to see for yourself. Sara, I sent along the URL address for the Indiana Index of Marriages through 1850 as you had requested; however, someone has been most helpful and sent along the URL for the INDIANA STATE LIBRARY GENEALOGY SECTION, a great resource for those of us researching in Indiana. We are so lucky to have all this information at the touch of a fingertip! Good Luck in all your searches! Marilyn
Just this week, I learned that an ancestor, Matthias MUELLER / MILLER was in Washington County, Indiana before buying land and moving to Perry County, IN in 1856. My best information is that he and his family came to the US in 1853 from Germany. I have no experience with Washington County records and would like to know where to find the best LOCAL collection. I will probably visit the courthouse in early June when I have some time off work. While I'm in the area, where else should I go (for research)? Thanks, Clara
Hi all, Anyone who is researching Williams - Sturges - Farmer: I recently purchased a first edition _History of Lawrence, Orange and Washington Co.'s Indiana_ and inside I found a couple things. One is a letter to Mrs. Beddow from J. Braddock Sturges of Boston, Mass. dated December 29, 1940. In it he is asking for help from Mrs. Beddow in tracing his family tree. There isn't alot of information in the letter, but it is interesting. His grandmother Sturges had taken him and his siblings to Indiana when he was young to visit family. His grandmothers father was Elkanah Williams, Elkanah's wife was a Farmer. He also says that his grandmother "is so old now that she has trouble in remembering..." Also in this book I found an old clipping of the obituary for Elkanah Williams penciled in is the date Oct. 8, 1888 This obit doesn't mention any survivors, only the bearers, who were other Dr's in the area. I will be posting this on my site this evening. If anyone is descended from Elkanah please let me know. I'll mail these things to you. I have no use for them and I'm afraid they would only get misplaced if I keep them. Thanks, Dee Listowner for KENTUCKIANA-L Kentuckiana Genealogy http://www.aye.net/~dee1234/

Best regards, Sara Deatherage sara.d@townsqr.com Glad to! http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/www/indiana/genealogy/mirr.html I would also recommend using Cyndi's list--the Indiana section--to help out with research in the state..if you don't already do it. The URL: http://www.CyndisList.com/ Just move on down to INDIANA and there possibly will be something else to help you along. I especially like to have the courthouse addresses and other information handy.
Hi, Could you give me the URL of DATABASE TO INDIANA MARRIAGES TO 1850? I do thank you for your time and attention. Best regards, Sara Deatherage sara.d@townsqr.com
I don't have any information for you on the Ray family as such; however, I needed to check something out on the DATABASE TO INDIANA MARRIAGES TO 1850 this morning and checked for you on the marriage of James Ray to Jane Newkirk. They were married in Crawford County, IN, on August 16, 1838. That may help in some way to get started...there seemed to be a lot of Rays in Indiana getting married during the years on the database; however, Crawford County wasn't popular. Do you know where he was in 1840? Perhaps the census can help. Good Luck. Marilyn
