    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] Denton and Related Families
    2. Sue Cook
    3. Hi All! For any new folks on the list, I thought I would let y'all know that I have a lot of Kentuckiana area families represented in my database at my web site for the Denton and related families. There are over 15,000 people in the database, plus a lot of other information on the site. If any of you have Dentons in your lines, I would love to hear from you! There are also some down-loadable gedcom files for families other than Denton that I have in my at-home database, such as Hunt, Moore, Plumlee, Cooper, Chastain, O'Dell, French, Shipman, Baker and Huff. All of these families intersect in some way with the Dentons, but have a great deal more information in the gedcoms that is on the site. There is a lot of other information on the site as well that you might find interesting, as well, since so many of the Denton and related families were early into Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia as well as the Carolinas. The address is: http://www.acun.com/dentons I hope you find something of value! Blessings! Sue Montgomery-Cook

    3. Searching for the family of Mary Brown and/or Alexander Brown from Bullitt Co., KY. Mary, born about 1801, married Henry Horine in Bullitt Co, KY on May 27, 1823. She died in 1870 in Bullitt Co. and is buried in a family cemetery there. Alexander Brown was born 179-, and is possibly the brother of Mary. Alexander married Sarah Horine (twin sister of Henry Horine, listed above) on March 24, 1817 in Bullitt Co. According to Horine family history, Sarah and Alexander moved to Lexington, KY where Alexander and his sons ran a distillery. I would appreciate any correspondence regarding the Brown family of early Bullitt Co, or anyone who can shed some light on the family lines of these Browns. Thanks...... 1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] Bob Hill's Column in 8/25/98 C-J
    2. Lois Mauk
    3. If you are in the Louisville area, columnist Bob Hill ran a prominent column in this morning's Courier-Journal concerning Donnie Loweth's fight to save his family's cemetery on Blackiston Mill Road. (I've asked the C-J webmaster to add Bob's column to the stories on the C-J webpage at http://www.courier-journal.com.) For reasons that I fully understand, Bob Hill had to tone down his article, lest he and the paper risk being sued by the property owners. He couldn't say that they had paved over two-thirds of this cemetery and that about half of the shopping center's parking lot is over graves. Though we have the survey evidence and circa 1923 photos of the cemetery showing dozens of stones in the now-blacktopped portion of the cemetery, the fact remains that, under current Indiana law, the property owners can get away with this! IT'S LEGAL!!! The real story here is the insensitivity of our lawmakers in making this possible. Write letters today to your Legislators, especially Rep. Markt L. Lytle (D) of Madison, a funeral director who may be sympathetic to this cause. The Indiana State Legislators' e-mail and mailing addresses are available at: http://www.state.in.us/cgi-bin/legislative/legislator_list.cgi If you haven't read Bill Shaw's Sunday 8/23/98 "Death of a Cemetery" article in the Indianapolis Star, see http://www.starnews.com/news/citystate/98/aug/0822SN_rhoads.html for the full devastating article and photo. I'm asking you to take a minute to write a concise, heartfelt letter to the Editor of the Courier-Journal pleading for overhaul of the statutes that make this sort of thing possible. It's only by reinforcing and bolstering the public's awareness of the devastating impact of current law on pioneer cemeteries in this state and others that we can perhaps pluck the heartstrings of the legislators who make this sort of thing possible. The other sad side of this story is that it is happening all over Indiana and everywhere in the country. Unless there is a great grassroots consciousness-raising effort, nothing will change. The e-mail address for the Editorial Department is: cjletter@louisv02.gannett.com The snail-mail address is: Readers' Forum The Courier-Journal P.O. Box 740031 Louisville, Kentucky 40201-7431 The fax number is: (502) 582-4290 Be sure to include your full address and telephone number or else they will not print your letter, though your street address will not be published. 2. Dee
    3. Hi everyone I just wanted to take a minute to remind everyone to hug your child today!! It only takes a minute to lose them. On Sunday afternoon, just before dinner, my three children were playing in the living room...getting a little too wild...and I told them to settle down...not even 30 seconds later I heard a big crash and my oldest son screaming. I ran into the living room to find my oldest son (10 yrs old) holding his head, and my daughter (the youngest, 3 yrs old) crawling on the floor....she wasn't breathing, and wouldn't respond to my voice.... She appeared as though the wind had been knocked out of her so I blew into her face...she took a deep breath and screamed. She was incoherent, and not breathing very well. I grabbed my phone and dialed 911. They took both Josh and Laikyn to the hosital in the ambulance...Josh ended up having stitches in his head, but no major injuries and was released that night. Laikyn, on the other hand, is one lucky little girl. The crash I had heard was a 100 lb wood mantle that hung above our fireplace. This 100 lb block of wood landed on her chest and pinned her between it and the brick hearth. After countless x-rays, catscans, and blood tests...they determined that there were no broken bones or internal injuries. She was released from the hospital tonight at 8pm. It seems the wood came at her at an angle and hit the tip of her nose, her mouth, her chin and then her chest. The Dr. said that had it came at her 1/2 inch either way she wouldn't be in very good shape. (Josh wasn't hit by this, we are guessing it was a picture frame that hit his head) Well...she's bruised, sore, upset...even a little whiny. (but whiny is good when you consider the alternative) And she will be one spoiled rotten little girl for a long time to come...but she's here and doing good. Accidents happen...and they can happen so fast. Enjoy your kids now and don't take them for granted...I thank the Lord I didn't have to add another date on our family tree!! Needless to say, I'll be off-line and totally unavailable for a while...atleast until she is up and getting into things like normal! ;-) If any of you need to get in touch with me, some of you have my number and, if you do, feel free to call, if not...just put my name in the subject line of an e-mail and I'll see it right away. I'll still need to download my e-mail everyday so it doesn't back up. Thanks all! Dee Kentuckiana Genealogy http://www.floyd-pavey.com/kentuckiana/ ***********NOTICE NEW URL*************

    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] "Death of a Cemetery" Revisited
    2. Lois Mauk
    3. I just got off the phone with Bill Shaw, the author of the 8/23/98 Indianapolis Star article entitled "Death of a Cemetery" that we have been talking about for the last two days. After all the research Bill did to write his story, he is still dumb-struck that this kind of thing is "legal". He also realizes that it is not an isolated incident. NOTE: As of 8/24/98, the "Death of a Cemetery" story is still on-line at: http://www.starnews.com/news/citystate/98/aug/0822SN_rhoads.html Bill says he has heard today from dozens of people about the story and was shocked to learn what a firestorm it sparked here on the Internet. He has even heard from descendants of the Foltz family formerly buried in Rhoads Cemetery who are absolutely outraged about this situation! They feel they should have been notified that Duke Realty was going to do this so they could have relocated their family members. Duke alleges that it did all that was legally necessary to try to find living descendants -- they published a tiny notice in the legal classifieds. Bill brought up something really important and asked me to emphasize it to all of you. If the present status of Indiana law disturbs you, write a letter or send an e-mail TODAY to the Editor of the Indianapolis Star/News. The address is: Editor Indianapolis Star/News P.O. Box 145 Indianapolis, Indiana 46206-0145 E-mail: stareditor@starnews.com When you write to the Star, be sure to include your mailing address and telephone number or else they will not publish your letter. (Your address will not, however, be published; it is used only for verification purposes.) If the Star publishes enough letters in response to this situation, then public outrage will surely catch the eye (and hopefully the hearts) of some of our Legislators. (Unfortunately, Bill Shaw does not have e-mail, but you can write to him in care of the Star at the snail-mail address above.) Also, invest a few 32-cent stamps and mail letters to your State Legislators today. Make a little noise and let them know that the law MUST be changed. If you forwarded any of the previous messages about the Indianapolis Star article to other groups or friends, send them a copy of this message as well. Be sure to regularly visit the Indiana Pioneer Cemeteries Restoration Project website at: http://www.np.huntington.in.us/inpcrp/ for updates on this situation. Thank you for your concern. Lois Mauk Jeffersonville, Indiana P.S. There is supposed to be a related story in Bob Hill's column in tomorrow's Louisville Courier-Journal (8/25/98). Robert Mears died about 1905 of tuberculosis in Bullitt Co. Robert has a sister, named Latisha Mears who was born in August 1880. Latisha married first in 1897 to Elun Corum and they lived in Bullitt Co at the time of the 1900 census. After the death of Elun, Latisha married Pat Stewart and relocated to Hart Co, KY where she lived until her death in 1974. I do not know her parents names but various Bates testified so that she could get money for her children after the war. The Bates names associated with her were William, Elizabeth, and Abibail. She was married in Edgar Co. Illinois and lived their until after her husband died. She then move to Coles Co. Illinois. I am assuming to be closer to her family. 3. The "Death of a Cemetery" story that Jack Eaton referenced in his 8/23/98 message to the INROOTS list this morning (below) is available on-line at: http://www.starnews.com/news/citystate/98/aug/0822SN_rhoads.html Whether you live in Indiana or not, you need to take a minute to read this article -- today! The same thing is happening all over the country -- even the world. It seems nobody cares! It's "legal" and they get away with it all the time. Write to a State Representative or State Senator today.
