Need to find who were the parents of John Setzer, b1841 in Floyd or Hardin Co. Would there be any birth records in either of these counties for this time period? If so could someone please check for me? Mary Ann Setzer

I have been a "member" for about a year. During that time I have met MANY cousins. One has sent me census records for 4 lines of the my husband's family. Almost 100 pages of "records"! I have also found addresses of libraries, cemeteries and genealogy societies where I have found more information. I have had Kentuckiana cousins give us little tidbits that have added up to knowing about 5 generations on 2 lines who all we started with was my husband's father information. Thanks for all the lookups and someone who even took a walk and searched the Portland cemetery for us last week! This group has been the biggest help in our search! Dale POPHAM and Janet MUNSON We are researching these famlies of Kentuckiana -- living there since at least 1830s -- POPHAMs of Cloverport,& Hardinsburg, Breckinridge Co. Hi, Is anyone researching WIESENBERGER? While this isn't a line I'm researching, I just added a scanned photo to my collection of a Louisville establishment named "J. Wiesenberger, jewelers, established 1869". I'm assuming my husband's g. grandfather (Lafayette DeWitt) worked for this business, as he is a member of the group standing in front . I'd guess the photo is from the 1910's or 20's. If interested, contact me and I can send the photo as a .jpg or .bmp to you, but you'd have to know who the rest of the people are! Hope this helps someone, Nancy Prouty, CA prouty@sonic.net

The address for Jefferson County KY historic records is: Jefferson County Historic Preservation and Archives 6th Floor, Urban County Government Center 810 Barret Avenue Louisville, KY 40204 Phone: 502-574-5761 They have a wide variety of records, including some marriages, births, deaths, land records, tax lists, naturalization records, will indexes and some wills. Most of this is on microfilm. I'd check with them directly about what years they have available and what costs may be. Some of these records are duplicated or complemented at the Filson Club and Office of the County Clerk, according to the flyer I got at the Jeff. Co.Archives. Dear List Members: http://iigs.rootsweb.com/immships/ We are a group of volunteers dedicated to making the search for our ancestors easier. We grew out of a need to find ships passenger lists right here, on- line. Many people who are searching do not have the strength of body to leave their homes and find this information. Many do not have the eyesight to search microfilms. Many with small children need to be at home with them while others do the leg work and some of us, to be sure, just want to do it the easy way. We began our work on September 16, 1998--to search, copy, decipher and type passenger lists that were not to be found anywhere on the internet. Within a week we had fifty volunteers and today we have nearly one hundred, hoping others will join us. Within a very short time we will have over 60 passenger manifests posted here on our new website, generously given to us by Rootsweb. That represents more than 5,000 passengers and more will be added on a weekly basis. Take a look at our website. You may find an ancestor now or keep on checking back as you may find one later. You guys were such a big help in tracking down Sharon General Baptist Church in Evansville, I'd like to ask another favor. Not bad considering your only clues were the word "Sharon" and "church"! In the minutes of Silver Creek/Stony Point Church that I am transcribing, there are a couple of references to a "new church called Macedonia". It was most likely a Christian Church, perhaps Baptist, and also probably in the Southern Indiana area surrounding Clark County. Anyone familiar with this name? Excerpt from the record: 08/1852 -- 3rd Lord's Day. Bro. John D. Carr presented a list of names of members of this church who had joined in the Constitution of a new church called Macedonia; to-wit: John Perry, James R. Harrell, Mary Williams, Sarah Harrell, Nancy Harrell, John D. Carr, Evelina Carr and Malinda Carr and the same persons are considered dismissed from this Church. 12/1852 -- Saturday before the 1st Lord's Day -- Bro. John Carr informed the Church that Sister Mary Ann Harrell has joined the new church at Macedonia, she having moved recently in the vicinity of that church; consequently she is dismissed from the watchful care of this church. Thanks. When I came home from work this evening, I fully expected the e-mail wires would be burning up about the story in this morning's Louisville Courier-Journal (10/22/98). Even in the Indiana edition, there was a prominent story about NINETY-TWO military markers found stashed in a storage shed at Greenwood Cemetery for over 30 years by the former operators of: Eastern Cemetery (on Baxter Avenue, near Cave Hill Cem.) Schardein Cemetery (at 7th Street Road and Homeview Drive near Shively) and Greenwood Cemetery (at 41st Street and Hale Avenue) All three cemeteries were abandoned by the operators 9 years ago after the Kentucky Attorney General learned that the operators were not only double-burying in these plots, but in some instances TRIPLE-burying there. Criminal charges were filed (but eventually dismissed) against several members of the cemeteries' board of directors, who were forced to resign. Apparently the operators just walked away from the sites. Since then, they have been in limbo, although several groups have made efforts to clean them up. Apparently, the former operators received these 92 military markers during the 1960s to the 1980s and stockpiled them in a shed, pocketing the money paid to them by the Government for placement of the stones. Because the records for all three cemeteries are so sketchy and in many cases simply nonexistent, today it is impossible to determine WHERE these people are buried. Wanda Hoosier of the West End Neighborhood Association (502-778-1501) is spearheading an effort to raise the money to have the markers arranged to create a memorial made up of three concentric circles with a flagpole in the center next to a bronze plaque. Admittedly, the markers won't be at the respective graves or even necessarily at the right cemetery, but this seems appropriate given the fact that we will never know where these people are really buried. When the markers were found, they were stacked in the shed on top of each other along with debris and old tires. Some were still in crates. I talked with Wanda tonight and she is mailing me a list of the veterans names and dates, a list prepared by the Montford Point Marine Association in hopes of getting the markers erected and locating some of the families involved. Wanda told the paper that she suspects that many of these individuals had no families, which would explain how the former operators of the cemeteries were able to get away with this. Their graves are believed to be in all three of the sites in question, one of which is the oldest Jewish cemetery in Louisville (Schardein Cem.). I am going to suggest to Wanda that she contact the Veterans Administration to see what information they can provide of these markers. Since they are fairly recent, the VA may be able to help a great deal. A fundraising drive is underway and I should have information on that as well in a few days. Unfortunately, neither the story nor the pictures are featured on the Courier-Journal website. Thought you might be interested in this. If you know anyone who might be interested in helping (such as veterans groups, etc.), feel free to pass along this e-mail message. I am tracking Wrights through KY >into TN and I found a James Bingham Murray born April 21st, 1805, in Edinburgh,Scotland. He married a Mary Strade(r?) October 3rd, 183(4?) in Brandenburg KY by a Rev (T?) L. Helm. The question marks come from not being able to read difficult, handwritten records from a Wright family Bible. There are others mentioned like Mary Murray born August 8th, 1821 in Green County KY, Eliza Ann Murray (a "consant" of JBM) born November 27th, 1814. It says Mary died July 25th, 1841 "Age nineteen years, eleven months, and fourteen days". However, I don't think the "math" is there to support it! Ha! Maybe it is, it's late and I'm just tired! I do not know where JB Murray is buried, I would like to know if you come across any other information. It may be in Somerville, in Fayette County, TN? Please let me know if you have any collateral information that might be useful. I'd be very gratefully for any leads at all. W. Years ago when I first started doing research, I went to the Louisville , Jefferson Co KY Library on York Street. I found a set of books, it had all my fathers and his siblings birth and the number of the birth certificate. I've learned alot since than, but do remember the books were according to the first initial of the Surname. VERY helpful. The also have the German newspaper written in the native language as did the U of L library as having this newspaper. i don't know if they do look ups or not. It could have been for Lou. or KY. I thought it was for KY. Wish I could be of more help, and the Lousiville Library could be on the (net), haven't looked, know I should. Happy Hunting !! Mickey
