    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] Happy Halloween!
    2. Dee
    3. Hi everyone! Do you have a scary ancestor story to tell? Let us here about it! This came through another list: ------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 30-Oct-98 11:58 Subject: A Phantom Engineer From: 4fergie@gte.net ------------------------------------------------------------------ Thought since Halloween is here, that this would be enjoyed. As reported in the Erie County Reporter January 23, 1890 Trainmen on the Lake Erie & Western railroad, between Findlay and Fostoria are greatly disturbed over what they claim is the ghost of a dead freight conductor, who was killed one night last November, about eight miles east of the former city, by his train breaking into two sections, and then coming together suddenly throwing the conductor from the car on which he was standing to the track below, where he was beheaded by the merciless wheels before the train could be controlled. This accident occurred near the village of Arcadia, at a point where dense woods almost form an arch above the track; and here it is that the ghost of Jimmie Welsh, the mutilated conductor makes its appearance nearly every night, as the midnight passenger train from Sandusky going west reaches the spot where he met his fate on that gloomy, autumnal night less than three months ago. The engineer and other officers of the train assert that scarcely a night passes but what a headless apparition can be seen coming out of these woods, as the train nears the scene of the accident, carrying in its bloodless hand, something that looks like a lantern, which it waves backward and forward in a measureless sort of a manner as though searching for some lost object. The train men have no sort of doubt but what it is the ghost of Jimmie Welsh, hunting for its lost head. The phantom is plainly visible until the engine with a scream of terror, voicing the feelings of the engineer, endeavors to escape from the horrible sight, then it turns, and walking into the woods slowly fades away into a blue mist. Two crews have already abandoned this road on account of the ghostly vision and have been transferred to other divisions of the road: and the present engineer in charge of the train was so badly frightened one night that it was with great difficulty he was persuaded to remain on his engine until relieved at Lima. He said he would not make the run again for all the money Senator Calvin S. Brice, the president of the road, possessed. The conductor and brakemen on this train confirmed the engineer's story and said they saw the ghost nearly every night, always seemingly engaged in the hopeless task of hunting for its head. On bright moonlight nights the apparition is not so plainly outlined as when the nights are dark and rainy, as has been the rule the past month. On such occasions the phantom conductor comes out clear and distinct having all the resemblance of a man minus his head, while the lantern in his hand gives out a fitful, uncanny sort of illumination that freezes the blood in the veins of the boldest railroader on the line. No other train is annoyed by this ghostly form, but this is explained by the fact that no other train passes the spot where Jimmie Welsh was killed, at the time of night when he was decapitated by the wheels of his car. The mater has thoroughly alarmed the employees of the road, and unless the spirit of the dead conductor is appeased in some way it will be difficult to get men to make the midnight run between Sandusky and Lima. 3. I read a lot of people being helped on this list. That's very encouraging for some, but for others of a different race, there seems to be no help at all. Some of you hold the key to people of color finding information concerning our ancestors. To be of help to others, if you find information on slaves or people of another race in your family background, please post it. Post it not only to the Slave Data list but to all lists. Some of do subscribe to other lists other than Slave Data. I know there has to be a lot of info out there. Let's help each other if we can! Thanks

    1. Re: [KENTUCKIANA-L] Anyone know of good libraries?
    2. Lois Mauk
    3. On the Clark County USGENWEB page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~inclark/clark.htm, we have a list of all the libraries in the area. I particularly recommend the New Albany Library, the Filson Club (Louisville), the National Headquarters of the Sons of the American Revolution (Louisville) and the Library at the Hay Center in Salem. The SAR library ($3 a day) has one of the largest microfilm census repositories that I'm aware of in this area. The Hay Center and the New Albany library also have large census on microfilm collections. A resource that I recently discovered is the James P. Boyce Centennial Library at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. The library is enormous but, on the second floor, they have the rare books archive and the microfilm collection, which includes hundreds of church histories and records. The Seminary is conveniently located at 2825 Lexington Road, east of downtown Louisville, just off the Grinstead exit from I-64, immediately west of the Cochran Hill Tunnels. The phone number is 502-897-4807 and they are open until 11 PM most weeknights as well as being open on Saturdays. Nights and weekends they have a skeleton staff, but you can do searches of their holdings on-line at http://lib.sbts.edu/MARION Pretty much across the road from SBTS is the Presbyterian seminary and they may have similar holdings, but I've never been there. Remember, if the church you are interested is not Baptist but it is an old church, don't forget that in the 1820s, the Restoration Movement resulted in hundreds of Midwestern and Southern churches leaving the Baptist faith and becoming independent Christian, Church of Christ or Disciples of Christ churches. Good luck. 3. New Albany Indiana has a wonderful genealogy library. The one at John Logan College is supposedly nice as well (I haven't been there). We did have fun going through New Albany's. There is also a nice library in Louisville - is it the Filson Club? So, if you make it to New Albany, you're right across the river from Louisville. Mary Ann

    3. Jeanne Burke <jeanne_b@hotmail.com> has scheduled a work day at DIETZ CEMETERY <see http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/5881/dietzcem.html for more info on the site> for SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31st, 1998. We will be meeting at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday in the parking lot of the "MEMPHIS TRAVEL PLAZA" (1361 Bluelick Road, on the EAST side of Interstate 65; _not_ the Davis Brothers Truck Stop on the west side of the Interstate). (Look for my red Windstar van; we'll park near the entrance and convoy to the work site.) If you join us, bring your boots! We have to cross two fences and walk across a cow pasture to get to the cemetery. If you've got a rake, trowel, shovel, scrap lumber for bracing, etc., bring that too. We hope to repair some of the smaller broken stones, probe for buried stones and assess the repair of the larger broken stones. The site itself is pretty clean as the property owners recently cleared it and built an electric fence around the graves to deter the cattle. If you can join us on Saturday, please drop a line to me or Jeanne. 1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] Augustus H. Letourmy > Clark Co., IN > circa 1860
    2. Lois Mauk
    3. Is anyone perchance working on an AUGUSTUS H. LETOURMY, who was in Clark County, Indiana (near Louisville, Kentucky) circa 1860? His name has come up in some research I'm doing on our church's Bicentennial History and he seems a somewhat interesting character; I'd like to know a little more about him. What I do know is: Augustus H. Letourmy was a First Sergeant in the 49th Regiment, Company I (Civil War), later commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant. He was the sexton for the Christian Church at Silver Creek in 1860 and is listed on its membership roll in 1861 but was later give a "letter of dismission" (meaning a letter of transfer to another church). According to Bart Johnson, Letourmy listed his residence as Memphis, Indiana; he enlisted Oct. 18, 1862 and mustered out Nov. 29, 1864. I've done some internet searches on this surname and most of what I come up with is in French, so I'm guessing he immigrated from France or was of French descent. I spent so much time deciphering and confirming the correct spelling of his name that I've become interested in what became of "Gus". Bart has on his website a picture of Lt. Augustus H. Letourmy <see http://www.kiva.net/~bjohnson/49th.html>, but Bart doesn't know anything more about him. Letourmy does not seem appear on the 1860 Clark County census, certainly not under this spelling. Anybody know anything about Lt. Letourmy? 2. I'm looking for a brick wall I've had for the last 3 years. William R. Nation(s)ll(b. 1813 in AL) came to KY and met, married Rachael Harris(b. 1814 in KY) they had all of their children in KY (Jefferson Co) and as the family story goes, they were killed by conferate soldiers ( but I have found Rachael on the MO Census) with no sign of William, so maybe he was only killed. Also I was told that one or both was Osage Indian. Is there any way to get proof of this ????? I have most dates of all their children, if any one ask for them. Their children names are : George Washinson Jackson Nations; Sarah Ellen Nations; William Calvin Basil Nations; Martha Nations; Henry Harrison Nations(my ggrandfather); John Milton Nations; Joseph N. Nations. Does any oneknow of this family???? Thank you Anne

    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] Anyone know of good libraries?
    2. Hello, Everyone on this list seems very knowledgeable, except me. Perhaps someone can offer me some assistance. I live in ILL, near St. Louis, MO and would like to be able to drive to somewhere where there is a good genealogy library.....i.e. census, etc of the counties I need in southern Indiana, Kentucky, and northern Tennessee. Does anyone have any recommendations? How about in Paducah or Owensboro KY, or Evansville, IN? Anyone live or have been to these areas to research? I prefer not to drive into St. Louis, because of the traffic. I have a physical disorder that makes me uncomfortable to drive in that much traffic, not unlegal for me to do so, just a limit I impose on myself, as a precautionary action. Thanks
