ANYONE WORKING ON THE FAMILY NAMES CONNECTED TO THE "MELUNGEONS", PEOPLE OF FREE,NON-WHITE" ANCESTRY...........NEVER SEEN AS LABELED "BLACK" ????? COMMON NAMES: GOWEN/GOIN/GOWENS, MOORE, BUNCH, BURCH, ROWLAND, GREEN, BERRY, BIRD, BYRD.......ETC..... I have no clue what the true ancestry is...even bought a book on Melungeons, but no one seems to have the real answer except they date back to early 1600's, and VA/NC Appalachia>>>TN/KY>>IN>>>> What is really odd is in some enumerations members of the same family can be labeled FCP "free persons of color' and others as "white"...........I also find as curious that many of the names are found in the Dawes Rolls (Cherokee)............... Hi: While reading your message, this part caught my attention: "CRECELIUS) located Minnie CRECELIUS" That surname stuck in my mind because I have been doing some heavy research in Crawford County, IN. I come across it all the time. A few weeks back, while at the local Family History Center, I was going through several microfilm rolls of "Families in Crawford County" (I'm sure that is not the exact name). Anyway, I came across copies of letters from an early settler who was from Germany. The letters were written to his brother and I think he was writing to him in Germany. They were written around the 1830's, I forget the man's first name, but I'm almost positive that the last name was Crecelius. The letters were very sad; he was writing describing how his wife could no longer walk due to illness in one. A later letter he describes the loss of his wife, and the fact that he feels that he will never see his brother again. It really brought home how hard it was (and is) for people to leave everything and start again, never to see loved ones again. Back to the original subject! You might look for Minnie in Crawford County or in surrounding counties in Indiana. Try posting on the Bulletin Board on Roots-Web for Crawford County regarding Crecelius. I came across a posting by an Ann Crecelius on that Board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa. states.indiana.counties.crawford&m=11.922 Ancestry.com took over the Bulletin Boards-but they are free access. You do need to sign up with a password, but it just takes a moment. Let me know if this helps! Carole V. Hi KY rooters.....Couple more ?'s: a) using Ancestry.com subscriber service the other day I made new DAR discovery of my TALBOTT family from Nelson Co--seems my grandmother (Edna Hester (Talbott) Murphy's grandfather, Pendleton Talbott's wife, Margaret Nicholsen (wow) traces back to a supplier (John Unseld-1745-1810) of materials & arms to Revolutionary Army thus apparently qualifying applicant, Mrs Nancy (Talbott) O'Brien, for DAR membership (I realized she was my grandmother's Aunt). So, is the SAR membership based on parallel criteria, ie, does a mere supplier of arms & ammunition qualify one for the DAR/SAR organization? (I've had pleasure to visit SAR library in Louisville & was quite impressed). b) The Ancestry.com people have some 152 Lineage Books on line for scrutiny......I'm wondering how many more volumes might there be down to current times? I'm hoping many many more having had such good luck in locating several generations of my family that I'd not previously known. c) anyone actually visit DAR HDQ in Wn DC for research purposes? What outcome? Thanks a lot for any tips, suggestions. Charlie Murphy near Sattle.
Hi KY rooters.....Traced several branches of my greater family to Jefferson, Nelson, & Meade Co; (surnames MURPHY, TALBOTT, O'REILLY, HYATT, CHISM, POPHAM, THOMPSON & CRECELIUS) located Minnie CRECELIUS in SSDI having died Jan 1990 age 90 @ 40041 Masonic Home, Jefferson, KY. Have reason to believe she may be daughter of Hyatt E Murphy & wife Minnie (Popham) Murphy of Meade Co. What county might that Masonic Home be in, Meade or a nearby co? Does the facility still exist? Address? I do not know her husbands first name or if they had children. TIA for any suggestions. Charlie Murphy near Seattle.

One family member has it as Keitner/Kettner and on a document from the orphans home it shows her as a Landreth (dont know if that was a married last name or a maiden name). In my research I found the following: a) In the Register French Orphans home, it shows Ada May Scarbrough age 5, father James Scarbrough (dead) mother Lena Landreth, date admitted to orphans home Oct 4 1903 Gibson County Indiana, From township Patoka, date placed Oct 8 1904 , by mother lena Killian of Princeton...can't make out entire remarks ...."-- mother". b)Ada Mae Scarbrough was born in Pinceton, Gordon County (Gibson) Indiana. Her mother was Lena Kettner or Keitner. Mae was part Cherokee from her mothers side of the family. Mae told of being in a wagon during the Cherokee Strip Land Run. Hello All, I am looking for any information concerning the following DANIELS/DANIEL family members from Southern Indiana, Northern Kentucky and South West Ohio. The information that I have on William DANIELS/DANIEL being from Wales has been passed down from family member to family member. I am now questioning the truth to information passed down from generation to generation. I am now wondering if he would be from a DANIELS/DANIEL family line that had already been in the US for a generation or two. I have found very little official documentation on my DANIELS/DANIEL family. My Grandmother, Bonnie Bell DANIELS-STEIN told my mother that the store (building #5) http://www.connerprairie.org/bstore.html was the home that my Grandmother, Bonnie Bell DANIELS-STEIN was born in.
