    3. Keith: Thanks for posting this list. Is anyone researching the Catherine or Lambert DARLING / DARLAND on the list? My ancestor, William LUCAS, married Catherine DARLING. Catherine was a widow and it is my understanding her first husband was named Van Liew. The parents of Lambert Darland were Johannes and Catharina Dorlandt from Somerset Co, NJ. Conowago, PA to Mercer Co by 1780. Catharina married husband #2. William Lucas in Jefferson Co, by 1785. Darland's members of the Low Dutch group which settled in the area in the 1780-90's and established the Old Mudd Meeting house. Related to Garret Darland who died in Mercer Co in 1820, son Garret Ward. Also Dyna Dorland Banta, wife of Sam Banta and Maria Dorland Saulter and husband Jacob of Pleasant Hill, Ky Shaker Community. If anyone has any more information on these families, please contact me. Will appreciate hearing from other descendants of William in order to complete update. Also, we have traced much of William's ancestors back to 1600's and would like to hear from others who have become involved in researching William Hardeman's (Hardiman) ancestry. Will be glad to have any data available on either of two above subjects. .Gene Hardyman

    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] DOG FENNEL
    2. The 1880 KY census lists several of my families living in DOG FENNEL in Fayette County, KY. I have looked in several books that are supposed to have listed all the towns that have been occupied during recent memory, but none list DOG FENNEL. The family members involved were in Madison County, KY in the 1870 census. So, suspect that the town may be near the border area of the two counties. Any help in locating this town would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, BB

    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] How easy is it to disinter a cemetery in Indiana? A lot easier than you can imagine!
    2. Lois Mauk
    3. Dear Friends: Many of Indiana's historic pioneer cemeteries stand "in the way of progress" as demand rises for land suitable for development. Down here in Clark and Floyd Counties (near Louisville, KY), we have one cemetery that was moved in February 2001 to make way for a department store, two more that have Circuit Court "Orders to Disinter" in place (one since February 2001 and the other since May 2001) for subdivision development, one that has been spared being dismantled thanks to the active involvement of the Township Trustee in putting a stop to that effort, and two more that are in serious jeopardy and which will likely be moved in the next several months. These six situations have come to light just since the first of 2001! Obviously, this is a burgeoning trend, though we do not have verifiable numbers for "portable cemeteries" elsewhere in the State. It is surprisingly EASY to get a court order to disinter a pioneer cemetery in Indiana. The most recent Clark Co. Order to Disinter was granted (1) to a funeral director who is NOT the owner of the cemetery OR the surrounding property; (2) on behalf of a subdivision developer who is NOT the owner of the cemetery itself, it being a specific EXCEPTION on his Deed; (3) without notice to the public; (4) with full knowledge of the Township Trustee; and (5) only six days after the Petition to Disinter was filed. [The entire court file consists of FIVE SHEETS OF PAPER!] There are many shortcomings to the current statutes, which are addressed in a Petition being sponsored by the Indiana Pioneer Cemeteries Restoration Project (INPCRP). The INPCRP asks you to help us call on the Indiana Legislature to overhaul the statutes which currently permit the quick and easy dismantling and relocation of our pioneer family cemeteries. The Petition document and a cover letter are on-line in a single PDF document at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp/Petition-Disinterment.PDF You will need the FREE Adobe Acrobat READER on your system to open the PDF link listed above. If you don't already have the Acrobat READER on your computer, you can download it from: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html I've also linked to the Petition documents in PDF format from a new INPCRP page on the subject of DISINTERMENT, which is linked to the main INPCRP page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp/disinterment.html We have included two different Petition forms: One is a "long form" that includes a good deal more text and room for only 5 signatures. The other is a "short form" with less text and room for ten signatures. I suggest you print out both and, if potential signers want to know more about the situation, give them the "long form", maybe with the included page of pertinent statute language. If you or someone you know (young OR old) has a strong opinion on this subject, ask him or her to write a short personal letter to Rep. Markt Lytle and, if you send it in with your signed Petitions, we will include those letters in the package we will be hand-delivering to Rep. Lytle on 10/6/2001. I'm sure he will pay particular attention to letters from children and young people as a further demonstration of the wide range of interest in protecting our pioneer cemeteries. We are really excited about the possibility of collecting a TON of signatures on this project. But we need your help to accomplish this goal. If anyone should ask, the names and addresses collected in this Petition drive will not be released or provided to anyone other than Rep. Markt Lytle, though I will be tabulating the number of Petition signatures received from the various Indiana counties and from outside the State and making that NUMERICAL information available on the INPCRP website. Thank you for all your interest in and support of this endeavor. Lois Mauk State Coordinator Indiana Pioneer Cemeteries Restoration Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp

    1. [KENTUCKIANA-L] BAILEY Families in 1850 Census,KY,NC,TN,VA
    2. First Families
    3. Hello BAILEY Researchers In Kentucky: I have recently received a Bailey Families CD and would like to pass on my comments of same. The Bailey Lady of Warrensburg, MO has done it again. Donna Beers who has written on the many various Bailey etc. families for over 20 years and has many published works has issued her first CD covering the various spellings including BAILEY, BALEY, BAYLE, BAYLE, BAYLES, BAYLEY, BAYLY, BALY, AND BAILIE that are found within the 1850 census for the states of NC, KY, TN and VA. Regardless of how you surname was spelled, at one time or another it was spelled as one of the above by various clerks, ministers, store keepers, bookkeepers, ship lists etc. Most have been interchangable through the years. She has searched every county within those states, several hundred hours work that should answer many questions you may have on the families. We are all aware of the many errors found in the 1850 census indexes and the only way to do an accurate search is to search the counties as there is much information there that you will not find within the index. As you may not be aware of the fact that the index was not created until many years after the actual census by two companies who used inexperienced people to compile them. A lot of these people were high schoolers who knew nothing about genealogy or how to read bad hand written material that was entered by various census takers. The Bailey lady searched each county within the state and has found many errors which she has checked through her data base, the largest Bailey data base in the country, and located many people who do not appear within the published index. No wonder so many of you have hit brick walls during this period. The name Bailey etc. has been found as indexed as Dailey, Railey etc. and Bailey children employed and living with other families were not picked up correctly. This first CD has 5954 individuals listed from this area. Her CD consists of various facts which are all searchable including State, County, Township, Page on the Census Roll, Value of the Real Estate, Occupation, Birthplace of the Individual, Age, Given Name, Surname, an F# which indicates the household number and who was living there, and year of the census. In addition Ms. Beers also has many of the families tied together with a number indication to the various Bailey Family books she has published or has a family sheet number on families she has not yet published and those would be available. Many of her books and booklets go back 10 generations, all sourced. She so far has developed over 200 different Bailey etc. different lines. If you are having trouble linking various families, this can help you. Her CD is in WORD DOCUMENT format and is fully searchable and appears in alphabetical original order. Just doing a quick search I have found the following to give you an idea on what a search can do. WILLIAM appears 78 times in KY, 58 times in NC, 73 Times in TN and 120 in VA JOHN appears 76 times in KY, 59 times in NC, 74 times in TN & 145 times in VA THOMAS appears 23 times in KY, 24 times in NC, 28 times in TN, 45 times in VA JAMES appears 50 times in KY, 41 times in NC, 59 times in TN, 106 times in VA now for the ladies ELIZABETH appears 73 times in KY, 46 times in NC, 57 times in TN, 116 times in VA MARY appears 96 times in KY, 62 times in NC, 76 times in TN, 152 times in VA NANCY appears 34 times in KY, 27 times in NC, 38 times in TN, 59 times in VA SARAH appears 51 times in KY, 26 times in NC, 48 times in TN, 79 times in VA All these people and more were alive in 1850. How many of there are your ancestors? For more of what this CD contains and what you can do with it go to; http://www.angelfire.com/mo/BaileyInfo/1850censusALL.html Happy hunting to you all.
