According to the census, he was 34 and born in Swanscombe, which is just west of Gravesend. That would make him born c1877. There is no Alfred Austin born in that area in that age range BUT there is an Alfred Thomas Austen born 1875 in the Gravesend District. If it were me. But in the 1901 census he and Bessie and their 4 month old daughter Bessie are living in Strood and his pob is given as Northfleet. I think he may be the same Alfred in the Malling Union in 1881 with his family, parents George and Julia.
