Hi David, Is this him - taken from the London Gazette - INDIAN LOCAL SERVICE. To be removed to the Unemployed Supernumerary List: — Major-General George Smart, Madras Infantry. Dated 12th September, 1885. INDIAN LOCAL SERVICE. Major-General George Smart, Madras Infantry, to be Lieutenant-General on the Unemployed Supernumerary List. Dated 2nd August, 1887. I can't find a baptism for him at either St Mary the Virgin or St James the Apostle or St Peter and Paul, just three of the churches in Dover. Do you have any idea of his parents details? I see on the 1841 census he is at East Cliff with several house servants so presumablly was already an Officer in the Army, the box for born in County does have a Y in it but that could mean anywhere in Kent, have you other information to say he was baptised in Dover? Hi David I have found his parents in 1851. His father George John is shown as Late Major, Land Agent and Farmer b 1804 Ashford, Kent. He is farming in Fulsby, Tumby, Lincolnshire with wife Catherine b Leybourne Grange, Kent (This is at West Malling, Maidstone and from 1936 to 1996 was used as a Mental Hospital). Children with them are Catherine b Dover and Dora Jane b c1840 Tumby, Lincs. I assume George was already in the Army. I have the Ashford St Mary CMB but no Smarts on there. Maybe some else has Others. Although of course it's possible that he was from one of the surrounding villages and just said Ashford since it was the nearest town Regards Sue -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of HOLDEN DOROTHY Sent: 23 March 2012 00:07 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] SMART - Dover Hi David, Is this him - taken from the London Gazette - INDIAN LOCAL SERVICE.
