Hello, Still trying to piece together the ARNOLD family from Sevenoaks, and I have found military records for a William ARNOLD, born 1787 in Sevenoaks, and enlisting in 1807. William moved from the 56th foot regiment, to the 22nd Light Dragoons, to the 13th Light Dragoons before being given a medical discharge in 1836. From 1808 to 1834 he was stationed in the East Indies. This William's trade on enlistment is listed as a tailor, which helps me to match him into the ARNOLD family I am tracing. Unfortunately, none of the military records show next of kin. I currently have 3 (maybe 4) W. Arnolds in the tailor/draper trade in Sevenoaks, but this man does not seem to fit the dates of any people I already have records for, so perhaps he is a cousin?? The eldest I have no info on, and really am guessing his name was William. There is a William in the Apprenticeship Indenture records in 1782 and 1792(as a master tailor) that I think may belong to this man. The 1782 record shows him with Henry Arnold also as master. His son William married Susannah CHAPMAN in 1792 and he died in 1820. His son William was born in 1801, married Jane SPENCER and died in 1869. His son William, born 1840, married Anna Maria JOSLING, moved to Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk, where my grandfather, Ralph Josling ARNOLD was born in 1886. Can anyone please help me identify the family of this military man William, and so give him his place in the family. Cheers, Jane Eliza (nee Arnold) NSW, Australia
Jane, I do not know if this will help in the time period of your ancestor...but my apprenticeship records of the early/mid 1600s show the fathers name in the original books at London Guildhall...It will be stated in the initial apprenticeship date document/page...The father's name and the village and county will be listed. Hope this helps you. Thanks for that, Donna. I am currently trawling through the gazillions of William Arnolds (again!) in the apprenticeship records on Ancestry. William Arnold seems to be just about as common as John Smith!! I know the National Archives show records held at London Guildhall so I'll try there as well. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a commute for me to visit in person! kind regards, Jane On 22/03/2012 11:13 AM, Donna Casey wrote: > Jane, I do not know if this will help in the time period of your ancestor...but my apprenticeship records of the early/mid 1600s show the fathers name in the original books at London Guildhall...It will be stated in the initial apprenticeship date document/page...The father's name and the village and county will be listed. > > Hope this helps you. > > Donna > > The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it will change; the realist adjusts the sails. > > > ________________________________ > From: Jane<[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2012 4:57 PM > Subject: [KENT-ENG] William ARNOLD b 1787 Sevenoaks > > Hello, > > Still trying to piece together the ARNOLD family from Sevenoaks, and I > have found military records for a William ARNOLD, born 1787 in > Sevenoaks, and enlisting in 1807.
