Dear Listers, I am researching the MILNS fmily of Tonbridge, especially the lineage of Henry George MILNS, baptised 20 Jan 1826, died 11 Jan 1856, son of Henry MILNS and Eliza BARTLETT. He was married to Ellen AUSTEN born circa 1829, Godalming, Surrey, died 18 Jan 1856, Tonbridge, daugther of Isaac AUSTEN and Mary Ann WALL. Henry was a silk mercer and linen draper and had premises on High Street, Tonbridge. Apparently Henry and Eliza died as a result of a fire. Henry died on 11 Jan 1856 and Eliza a week later. According to a death notice in the Sussex Advertiser of 29/1/1856, Elisa survived Henry by one week and died on the day he was buiried. I have not been able to trace any details of this tradgedy and am hoping some kind soul might have more information for me? Henry and Eliza's children were put in the care (guardianship?) of their grandparents and of the five children, two later immigrated to South Africa and two to Australia. I descend from the eldest boy, Arthur, who immigrated to South Africa. Regards Paul LE ROUX Paarl South Africa
