    3. Hello Dennis. Your list of that which London has been taking over should now include some of South Hertfordshire also should it not? For instance Barnet became the London Borough of Barnet in 1965 I believe. Sadly, as London, which was originally only the City of London, spread out into Kent, Surrey, Middlesex and Essex our political masters decided that the extended development would be better administered as a single county. The big take over was in the 1890's. Further changes in administration has taken place as the conurbation of London kept growing. Will it ever end? 3. It is easy to forget that the Local Government Act of 1888, which brought the "County of London" into being, was passed for much wider and more important purposes than regularising the administration of the world's largest city (whose population grew from approximately 1 million in 1800 to nearly 7 million in 1900). The point of the Act was not specifically to cobble together a new county, nor even to give county status to the area already centrally administered, to a large extent, by the Metropolitan Board of Works (established in 1855), but to hand control over administrative matters to *democratically elected* county councils covering the whole of England and Wales with authority over such matters as: Making and levying of rates Borrowing of money Passing of county accounts Maintenance and construction of county buildings such as shire halls, county halls, court houses and police stations Licensing of places of entertainment and of race courses Provisions of asylums for pauper lunatics Establishment and maintenance of reformatory and industrial schools Repair of county roads and bridges Appointment, dismissal and setting of salaries for county officers Division of the county into polling places for parliamentary elections, and the provision of polling stations Control of contagious diseases in animals, and of destructive insects Fish conservancy and control of wild birds Weights and measures Caroline > -----Original Message----- > From: kent-eng-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:kent-eng- > bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Alan > Sent: 04 October 2013 11:57 > To: kent-eng@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [KENT-ENG] DEPTFORD > > Hello Dennis. > > Your list of that which London has been taking over should now include some > of South Hertfordshire also should it not?
