Hi All I have added a page to my website for Whitstable. There are 178 names on the memorial from the Great War and I have managed to identify all except 23 of them. If there are any Whitstable experts among us I would value your input. I believe it will need somebody with close knowledge of the place/period to crack these. They have resisted my every effort so far! Names still unidentified are as follows: *Army* 2nd Lieut. F.W. ALLEN 2nd Lieut. G.COLE Serjeant. P. MORGAN Corp. H. PAYNE Corp. A.W. PRICE Private. C. BEARD Private. A.R. CORNHILL Private. A.J. FISHER Private. A. HURLOCK Private. F. JOHNS Private. C. JONES Private. T. PACKMAN Gunner. H. RICHARDS Private. E. WHITMORE *Royal Navy* J.A. HUNT R.J. JOHNSTONE C.G. RIGDEN G.G. WARWICK *Merchant Marine* Captain. G. CLARK W. ADAMS W. HALLIDAY F.T.O. SHARP C.J.M. WHORLOW -------------------- Many thanks for any help Dave Dixon BA (hons) - Economic & Social History - University of Kent - Canterbury 1997 www.fadedgenes.co.uk
Hi Dave It is me again Michael in Clacton. I was born in Whitstable, but left when I was two for Essex. Until recently I had relatives in that town, but they have now departed, which is often the way when you need their knowledge. Two of the names for which you have bother are 'relatives' Rigden, my grandmother's nee name and Whorlow, but the latter only traceable in my tree well back. The owners, or website moderators, might be of use for local history, maybe you are aware of them already, running 'Oystertown' and another site 'Simply Whitstable'. For my part I will have to check the Rigden person, it might refer to a young sailor killed when his vessel was sunk by enemy action. He got scalded to death....terrible. I'll see what I can do.
