A big thank you to those on this list who helped me out, especially Pauline, as it is certainly great to get some experienced and local advice. So for the record, in case any other descendant passes this way, here is a précis of my John Smith: born c 1783 (based on his age of 58 years in 1841) -> perhaps the John Smith, baptised July 1872, Middlesex, s/o Richard and Mary Smith; also a John Smith, baptised July 1783, Cambridge, s/o Richard and Mary Smith (but John is not born in Cambridgeshire according to the 1841 Census) married c 1807 to Elizabeth (possibly Elizabeth Brabant of Saint Albans, Herts.) 1809 birth of first child, Elizabeth Mary 1810 Henry (later to become Rev) 1814 Edward Brabant (Rev) 1816 Francis John 1817 Ann 1818 Matilda 1820 Jane 1822 - admitted to Gray's Inn, Jan 1822: Smith, John, first son of Richard Smith, of St Albans, Hertfordshire, gent, deceased. 1822 Frederick William (Rev); a BA from Cambridge "and afterwards resident at Dover with his father". 1824 Henrietta 1827 - On Wednesday last, John Smith, Esq. of Bedford-row, and of Revel-end, Herts, was called to the Bar, by the Honourable Society of Gray's Inn. 1841 Census: Parish of Milton (Cambridgeshire) Fen End John SMITH 58 Barrister at Law No (born in this county) Elizabeth Smith 58 N Ann Smith 23 N Matilda Smith 22 N Frederick William Smith 19 N + two servants 1844 Kentish Gazette pub Tuesday 19 March 1844 Death: March 11, at Dover, John Smith, esq. barrister at law, aged 61. 1844 CPC Admons - Index to Death Duty Registers 1796-1903 Intestate: Smith, John; Name & Res of Administrator: Elizabeth Smith, Histon (residence of son the Rev Henry Smith). So although he did not spend much time in Kent, his last days were there and his family lived on there. His wife, Elizabeth died in Ramsgate in 1871. Thanks again for all the generous help Elizabeth O'Connell New Zealand
